I read that as surprise by Kellhus when he discovers his emotions (love?) toward Esmi.
Maybe love is to great a word for it. But to say he has no emotions for her ...

I found myself thinking he felt jealous but perhaps there is room for debate on the issue. Certainly Esmenet doesn't believe he loves her. I believe she remarked once that Akka is the only man to have ever loved her long after Kellhus had made her pregnant.

Kel did experience love in TTT, and he was most surprised by that fact.
I just can’t remember where it was now.
When he came off the cross?, that seems to ring a bell.

I'm not sure it can be called "love" but I recall Kellhus having a reaction he was surprised by.  Can't recall the specifics but Kellhus was watching Esmi while she was walking somewhere dangerous where she could fall and she stumbled or did something risky and Kellhus caught his breath unexpectedly.  So yes, Kellhus had reactions that weren't always perfectly controlled (atleast at that point in the story before he became Super-Saiyan-Kellhus), but this hardly proves he loves her.

I have similar feelings. It's a long stretch to say having concern for someone means you love that person. It simply doesn't follow.

In any case, none of this really causes me to change my original opinion, which spawned this whole conversation. I still feel the entire relationship between Kellhus and Esmenet is contrived and, ultimately, is a disservice to the series more than anything else.

Is there still a set of books after TUC? I get the feeling Bakker is going to try to write a non-fic book.

whoops wrong thread.
