A stunning breakdown of a drive by the Jets last weekend, on Grantland:

Quote

With 8:14 left in the third quarter, the Jets embarked on a possession that served as a wonderful advertisement for the NBA's impending return. There were no fewer than eight penalties on the drive. Eight! The Jets started off with a chop block call that moved the ball half the distance to their goal line, and then picked up a holding penalty on the next play, which moved the ball to their own 2-yard line. Two plays later, Kansas City's Jovan Belcher was called for roughing the passer to give the Jets a new set of downs. On the very next play, an incomplete pass from Sanchez was met with two defensive holding calls. Todd Haley responded to this as only he could, trying to get thrown out of the game by arguing with the officials. Since this isn't baseball, he got only a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. (Haley’s ejection had to wait until Monday afternoon.) The Jets then ran two plays for 4 yards without incident before Brandon Flowers was called for pass interference on third-and-3, resulting in a 16-yard penalty. Finally, on the ensuing play, Mark Sanchez didn't get the snap cleanly, but managed to pick up the ball and loft a bomb to Dustin Keller, drawing another pass interference penalty, this time on Kendrick Lewis. All in all, the Jets advanced the ball 93 yards while picking up a total of 12 yards on offense.

Was anyone watching this game?  Did the announcing crew comment on that?

I was and they did.  It was pathetic and they said so.

I love that TT has possessed this thread.

Here's what I'm pissed about.

I am not pissed that Tebow is having success.  It's a crazy-ass story, and I maintain that if (and it's a big "if") he could improve his passing skills he'd have something to work with.

What does piss me off is that there is a contingent of people that believe that this is a long-term winning formula as it is right now.  It is not.  Tebow's QB rating for the first 51 minutes is 15.7.  I repeat that:  15.7.  In the final nine minutes it is dramatically improved to something like ~75, but that's just good and nothing special.

This would not be possible without a phenomenal team effort and unconscionable collapses by the opposition.

I suppose some might argue that Tebow somehow wills this whole thing to become....we shall see.

It makes for a good story, but that is all it is. One that I am sure we will hear too much about for many tastes. It's not all that special to have a somewhat good team put together a really good run...hell even bad teams do this (look at the Bills). The outcome of their circumstances have still been fairly amazing, but you summed it up well enough with the first sentence.

I think the whole Tebow thing is crazy because some people seem to believe Tebow's will wins games. Like against the Bears, some people acted like Tim Tebow could somehow will Marian to fumble.

I don't actually think anyone has suggested that except in jest, to be honest.  There's a big reaction to something that didn't actually happen. It's kind of a weird manufactured narrative.  I hate Tebow, and I don't really like people who support him based on "he just wins games" (HI VINCE YOUNG!) or "he's got a lot of heart" (THAT SOUNDS LIKE A DANGEROUS MEDICAL CONDITION!), but nobody, at least in nominally accessible media, has made the argument that he made Barber fumble without their tongue directly in cheek.

Ditto.  They seemed kind of shellshocked.  It was pretty appalling to see in person.  In fact, I don't think the Jets have played more than one or two aesthetically pleasing games this year.

Your right BLU-RAY that really hasn't occurred much in the national media. I guess I was reacting more to friends and fans.

Don't make Skip Bayless say it again.  "He......just.......wins.......football.....games."

On a related notes, biologists are still unable to locate the "clutch gene" anywhere in the human genome

I've seen a lot of terrible TV in my time, but I'm not sure anything beats watching Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith try to out-douche each other over Tebow.

ETA: Actually now that I think about it, Bayless and Smith are great for inoculating you against confirmation bias, because you can agree with their initial premise and still think they're making stupid arguments.

I'm ambivalent towards Tebow.  I said it when he was at Florida that I never saw what made people call him the greatest college football player of all time.  He had one Heisman (in a sub-par year for his team) and started for one national title winner.  Lots of players in history have that resume.  On the same hand, I won't trash the dude for trying to play the game of football to the best of his ability.

With all that said, I can't turn away when the Broncos are playing and its the fourth quarter.  I tuned in with the game 10-0 and turned to my wife and said "The Broncos have them right where they want them."  And I'll be damned if they didn't.  Its truly amazing TV to watch.  In some ways its like Tiger Woods on Sunday back in the day.  If he was playing, I'd watch... if he wasn't, I didn't.

Its somewhere in the gene desert.  They just aren't looking in the right place.

It's that complete lack of logic, or even common sense, that makes me doubt how they survive each day.

The Tebow thing they have on that show is crazy, fascinating in a train wreck sort of way. How many times can they have the exact same argument? How much can they bring up Tebow with renaming the show The Tebow Take?

ETA: Bayless is such a lunatic, the stuff that comes out of his mouth constantly amazes me.

I Heart Skip Bayless !!!!

I have been listening to him since the mid 90's. He was one of the founding members of The Ticket in Dallas which is the best and longest running all sports radio station in the country. Yes, he is amazingly obnoxious, but he is entertaining. He also has a remarkable ability to call things.

Bad news guys, what we've long suspected is true:

Quote

Tebow came to me and said, ‘Don’t worry about a thing,’ because God has spoken to him,” linebacker Wesley Woodyard said after Sunday’s win over the Bears, according to Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post.  Woodyard then forced the Marion Barber fumble in overtime, when the Bears were in field goal position.

“It’s not necessarily prophesying,” Tebow has said.  “But sometimes you can feel God has a big plan.”

God is now officially a Broncos fan.

Just terrible news for any other team that wants to win a Superbowl in the next millenium.

ESPN had the most misleading headline in a while in their AFC East blog earlier today.  It was titled "AFC East update: Bill O'Brien moving on" and I thought, holy shit I can't believe Brady has such pull in the organization that he got his OC shit-canned over a shouting match.  Turns out though that its just a report that O'Brien is quoted as saying he's focusing on the next game, not on the shouting.  Well, duh, of course that's what he's doing on Wednesday before a game; how is that news?

Transparent attempt to up their page views.

Well he didn't make the Cowboys win every year.
On the bright side, Denver has an open-air stadium. They won't have to cut a hole in the roof so that God can watch.

Also, Denver has teh highest altitude of any stadium. Closest to God. Coincidence?

Awesome. God somehow always makes time for athletes and Republicans...but doesn't have the cure to cancer or the end of hunger?

God's as big an asshole as Tebow.
