Wasn't it because Jaime was being held by Robb? Tywin wanted one of his sons to do it for him?

Tywin assumed Jaime would not make it alive, which would make Tyrion his heir. He gave Tyrion some responsibility just to see how he could handle such an important task. And I doubt Tywin really wanted to drag Tyrion with him all the way around the Riverlands; he'd be more of an use at KL than with him.

Tywin is no fool, he knows how smart Tyrion is. That's why I think.

I could imagine that somewhere in his mind Tywin also wants Tyrion to be safe. Tyrion thought that he'd given Jamie up and maybe he just wants his other son to be in a safer place. I know that this might sound absurd because Tywin hates Tyrion but he needs a succesor and maybe he was concerned about Tyrions life, at least he is still his father.

King's landing is definately not a safe place, regarding the previous hands of the Kings were recently murdered. I think Tywin was just being calculative. Tyrion is intelligent and cunning and he has no use for him at the battlefields. ALso Tyrion has the courage to go against Joffrey. Tyrion's views on Ned's death was probably an important clue for Tywin that Tyrion would handle things better than Cersei/Joffrey.

And as other posters said, Kevan is needed as a battle advisor, especially since Robb Stark is kicking their asses.

He (grudgingly) knows Tyrion is smart, and he wanted on of his sons to represent him.

Tywins wife died giving birth to Tyrion, is the reason for Tywins scorn against tyrion. But Tywin and everyone else can see that tyrion can run a kingdom better than Jamie and Cercies put together

I think that Tywin believes that Tyrion is smart, and cunning, and has a sharp enough tongue to reel Joffrey in.

Outwordly Twyin does dispise his son, but after all he is is son, I do think that deep down he loves and respects Tyrion, but is unable to show that because he deems it weak.

We all know how important the appearance of strenght is to the Lannisters.
I agree, I also think that Tywin knows that Tyrion is more his son than Jaime is because Tyrion is crazy smart, cunning and Tywin knows that Tyrion will do what is best for the Lannisters (and also the realm)
