Re: the recent list, Sweetrobin isn't dead yet either! And I'm really surprised that Quentyn had more mentions than Arianne, even though he had more POV chapters, I guess.

Arianne only appears in four chapters. Quentyn appears in eight - four of his own, two of Dany's and two of Barristan's. That makes a big difference.

The fact that Daario Naharis is rubbing shoulders in this list with Yoren, Lord Manderly, Ygritte, Rickon, the Red Viper and the Halfhand - all far more memorable characters - just goes to illustrate how padded-out ADWD is.

And Haldon Halfmaester making the top 100 despite the fact that I remember virtually nothing noteworthy about him.

Which other whores did you have in mind as competing for the post? The only other one I can think of is Alayaya and she's well down the list...

Yeah I think you're right. No one else is even close. I was just thinking that there's probably enough in the series as a whole to be a category. I'm not sure why, though!

Maybe Doreah counts. There's the girls in The Peach, those in Braavos, and other randoms, but they will be way down I guess.

Wasn't Satin a whore too? Though he also doesn't have as many mentions as Shae.

I don't know why but some of the info in this list seems a bit innacurate.

I feel a bit sad that Rickon isn't with his siblings =(

EDIT: I also find it interesting that Catelyn scored higher than Cersei.

5. Jaime
4. Dany
3. Arya
2. Jon
1. Tyrion

Dany's only really mentioned by other POV characters in AGOT, AFFC, and ADWD, so she'll probably always lag behind Arya, Jon, and Tyrion, who are thought about by other major POV characters.

What I find so interesting is the possibility that every one of those five is related to at least one other in the same set. That makes them all one big extended family.

For example, Arya & Jon might be cousins, Jon & Dany might be nephew/aunt, Dany & Tyrion might be half-sister/brother,  Tyrion & Jaime  might be half-brothers, and Tyrion & Jon might be half-uncle/nephew.  I always found Tyrion’s treatment of Jon to be avuncular; perhaps that’s why.

True. In fact, if A+J=T and R+L=J, then when Sansa married Tyrion, he was not only her husband, but also the half-brother of her uncle by marriage! Not that they shared any blood.

In fact, you can go several better than that. It's not just the top five which are related, it's the top eleven! Robb, Bran, Cersei, Cat, Ned and Sansa are all fairly obviously related to the tree you've just drawn. So there you go. It's Sam who breaks the pattern.

In fact, all this intermarriage is leading to some fairly complicated-looking family trees.

People have already remarked on Jon-Dany being an aunt-nephew relationship, although that's fairly detached by Targaryen standards and they are of an age. Doran planned to marry Quentyn to Dany, his uncle's sister, and there's speculation that he now plans to marry Arianne to 'Aegon', who if he's legitimate is her cousin.

It's kinda funny that Robert isn't Joffrey's father, but instead his brother-in-law-in-law (they're related through Margaery). Jon met his great-great-uncle at the Wall, Robert killed his second cousin, and Sansa is being groped by her uncle. Myrcella is betrothed to Trystane Martell, who is her grandmother's lover's son's nephew-in-law :-)

Endgame.

5. Queen Daenerys Targaryen (1594) - highest Targ
4. Ser Jaime Lannister (1701) - highest knight, Kingsguard
3. Arya Stark (1767) - highest child, Stark, female character
2. Tyrion Lannister (2932) - highest Lannister, westerman, Hand
1. Lord Jon Snow (3009) - highest NW member, highest lord, northman, bastard

The top two have barely anything between them, but they're light years ahead of the others.

Thanks to everyone who was interested!

Sam should be the highest non-Great House character, not Brienne.

The High Sparrow should be the highest septon, not Septon Meribald.

Also, you list Pate as having 71 mentions. I suspect you're conflating characters here, since there are several Pates, none of whom I'd expect to have that many mentions, and you don't specify which.

Edit: I see the Sporcle quiz says it's the Oldtown one. Does he really get 71 mentions? I guess it's possible, since he was a POV.

Interesting I'm glad you took the time. I wouldn't mind seeing this after all seven books. I would suspect some characters will increase and some characters will decrease over that time.
