who do you think qualifies as most badass family in the series? And I'm only talking about the big ones such as Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Targaryan, Tully, Tyrell, Greyjoy and Martell

In terms of actually being willing to get their own hands dirty, I'd say probably the Starks and the Greyjoys. The Lannisters and Tyrells hide behind gold, the Martells have their moments but sit on their hands too much, the Tullys are meh in general, the Targeryens were chased out, there aren't enough Arryns left to really judge and the Baratheons go from one extreme to the other.

Well since I can't say Clegane, I'll say Stark followed by Greyjoy and Martell.

I don't think there's much of an argument really. Its the Greyjoys.

Balon tried to capture the biggest Kingdom in Westeros whilst everyone else was concerning themselves with the Iron Throne. He didn't bother wasting time trying to make any alliances either; just straight into battle, no nonsense.

Victarion and Euron are two of the most badass characters in the series. An axe-wielding warrior who heals infected wounds by burning his limb to a crisp and a one-eyed psychopath who has plundered from Pyke to Qarth and pissed into the Valyrian Sea.

Then there's the youngsters; say what you like about Theon, but who else his age had his ambition? Even his badass father didn't have the balls to attack Winterfell, but Theon did it with a handful of men and successfully captured it (for a bit). Then there's Asha, a girl who prefers finger-dancing to er, dancing. How many northmen did she kill with her axe before she was eventually captured by Stannis? She's the hardcore, grown-up version of Arya.

The Greyjoys are badass. They even have the most badass words - 'We Do Not Sow'. That's a promise, not a threat.

Greyjoy, obv.

I think the Tyrells are badass because 1. The Queen of Thorns and 2. I have always believed we haven't gotten a Tyrell POV because they're up to something big BIG! those sneaky bastards!

I still think they hide behind wealth (Lannister-lite), but that I most certainly agree with.

Aren't the Tyrells supposed to be marching on Storm's End now that its been captured by Jon Connington and 'Aegon'? Im not entirely certain but I think that's one of the things that was picked up from GRRM's reading of the unpublished Arianne chapter.

If that's true, then my guess would be that the Tyrell alliance with the Lannister's won't be lasting very much longer. I can see the Tyrells offering Margaery to Aegon as a future bride with the hope of aligning their forces with the Golden Company. Quite what Doran Martell will think of that I don't know as I'm sure he has his own plans regarding Aegon and Arianne. Things could get very interesting indeed between Tyrell and Martell.

Tyrells

The fact that they never had a POV just makes them even more interesting. And the Queen of Thorns is one of the most badass characters of the books.

I understand why people compare them to the Lannisters but the Tyrells are one of the few families who actually stick together, they are Lannisters with sense.

The Starks – to have ruled the North for so long, it’s not just all justice and honor, it’s also coupled with some badassery.

The Greyjoys – as Neo has explained so eloquently above =D

Greyjoys are easily most badass.

Then Baratheon, because of Stannis and Robert. Renly kind of lets the team down a bit.

Then the Starks, sort of. Robb and Arya are unquestionably badass, and Rickon probably is too. Jon's mostly emo but becomes a badass when he does Janos Slynt. Sansa and Bran... no, not yet anyway.

Martells are only badass if you include the Sand Snakes.

The Tullys only have one badass, the Blackfish.

Jaime and Tyrion are my favourite characters, but they are not badasses. Sorry Lannisters!

Targs are hard to judge. Dany's badass up until ADWD. Viserys was just pathetic. Aemon's wise but I wouldn't say he's a badass. Bloodraven on the other hand is so badass that he's now a tree and doesn't even give a fuck.

Of the minor Houses, the Umbers, Mallisters and Cleganes stand out.

ETA: Forgot to mention the Tyrells. Loras and Garlan are good knights but that doesn't make them badasses. QoT is clever but, again, not a badass. They are on par with the Lannisters.

Baratheon for Stannis & the Usurper Robert.
Martell even if I only consider Oberyn, because he has enough badassery for the entire universe.
Greyjoy and maybe even all the Ironborns because of their "baptisms".

In order, Craster (yes, there are too few of them, but that is sort of the point.  Being badass is sort of the same as leading a destructive lifestyle, after all), Greyjoy, Martell and Stark.

Greyjoys hands down, and then the Starks, winter will come for everyone in Westeros who dared to mess with them :cool4:
