Overall the Targaryens with the Dragons . . they conquered Six of the Seven Kingdoms . . and took many Lords and Kings down . . look at the Iron Throne it is packed with dozens if not hundreds of swords  .  Aegon with his 3 were just unstoppable ..

Then you would have to say Martell. Yes the Sand Snakes are "Hood Rats" ready to rumble but the fact that even Aegon couldn't conquer them is amazing.

the starks are pretty bad ass when you look at individual accomplishments but when you look at the whole family predicament not so much.  even sansa was pretty bad ass when sweet robin fucked with her winterfell snow castle. and rickon is gonna show up outta no where with a wildling mentor on a unicorn with a man eating dire wolf. if thats not bad ass, then i don't know what is.

greyjoys are pretty bad ass with finger dancing.

The Starks are hardly "badass". They are more tough/honorable/etc.

The badass title definetely goes to House Payne

This made me laugh.

"Yea, I'm a tree. Wanna fight about it?"

Baratheon "The laughing storm" "Ours is the fury" and Robert who smashed Rheagar, who was considered best knight in the land. How much more bad-ass can you get? Starks are pretty bad-ass as well. King of the North, Greenseer, Ultimate Assassin, Lord commander, Queen, and Cannibal. Bad-ass at its finest.

Asha and Victorian are desperately trying to make house Greyjoy not look like a bunch of craven. Every other house is filled with power hungry, scheming little bastards that use their influence to do their bidding instead of their strength. The Targs are all but gone except for Dany (a HUGE disappointment in Dance) and Aegon who I don't think is legit but I hope he is.

Without Oberyn and the Sand Snakes, Martell isn't much. But lets face it, Oberyn was the most bad-ass character in all of westeros history.

I'd say Baratheon.

Badass great houses? I go with the Baratheons. Robert, the laughing storm and even Stannis to a point were/are badass imo. The Greyjoys too, not quite successful though, but actually I know I wouldn't really want to piss off one of them.
Not sure about the Starks, to some extent I would say yes, then again nay... 50/50.
And the Umbers, they are so badass that I even have to list them here, although the OP says only great houses.

Greyjoys are the most badass main House, IMO. They're a crazy, wild family that are always in the thick of battle and such, causing mayhem and reaving and whatnot. They can do some horrible things, but they're definitely badass.

The most badass House that isn't a large or main one: Mormonts. C'mon. The She-Bear and her daughter went to war with Robb, and no one gave them crap about it like many people gave Asha crap. They were just there, and they were awesome. The Old Bear as Lord Commander on the Wall was awesome and badass. Even Ser Jorah Mormont had his moments before he went all moony and depressed over Dany.

Stannis Baratheon officially redeems House Baratheon's badass points after Robert got killed by a pig. To quote another board member, he's the "Energizer Bunny of warfare". There's something awesomely badass about a guy who just never stops, no matter how many times you kick him in the balls (Blackwater, Salladhor Saan's fleet, losing Dragonstone, being stuck in the north, having a hideous she-bitch wife, having an insanely hot and rather insane fire priestess constantly trying to light kingspawn on fire). Stannis is easily one of the most badass lords in Westeros.

You can't stop him...you can only bend the knee, or have it broken.

For the above reasons Stannis is the only candidate for King when it comes to uniting Westeros against the supernatural threat that is awakening north of the Wall.

As someone else said, he's like Batman; he may not be the leader that Westeros wants, but he's the leader that Westeros needs.

My answer= obvious. hehe

If I were to go for runners-up, I'd say Greyjoy, then Tyrell, then Stark and Lannister, then Arryn (am I the only one totally behind Littlefinger offing Sweetrobin?) and Tully (sorry fish people, you suck).

If we were to go into the minor houses: Payne wins (Podrick!!!) followed by Manderly, Bolton, Tarly, Umber, Dayne, and Reed.

The Boltons are pretty badass, there's no doubt.

"Jaime Lannister sends his regards" is one of the coolest lines in the saga

It depends on how you define "badass" To me it means that characters do daring things and actually succeed or make good of their promises. Trying someting really dangerous and failing is called being an idiot...

I think it is hard to say which family is the most badass because each family has its own strong and wak members. But if i had to name a house that is the least badass is would be house Stark.

So here is my list of people who are not badass.

Ned Stark: He got owned every step of his short term rule as hand of the king -->idiot
Rob Stark: He was becoming a badass untill he dropped the ball a few times and lost everything --> idiot
Oberyn Martel: If he was a real badass he would have simply finished off the Mountain instead of having a mental breakdown --> big idiot
Jaime Lannister: He never was a badass to begin with.
Tyrion: He lost his badasseness when he shot his father on the toilet and strangled shae
Jon: He will never be a badass unless he puts aside his morals
Victarion and Euron: They are just to crazy to be badass

People that are (still) badass

Grandma Tyrell: She plotted to kill the king on his own wedding, succeeded and got Tyrion framed for it.... Enough said
Areo Hotah: He does not question and simply does what he is told to perfection
The wildling Orrell: Even death did not stop him from getting even with Jon
The guy from the nightwatch that stayed behind to make sure Jon and Qhorin Halfhand had enough time to outrun the wildlings
Littlefinger: His whole plan untill now is going as he wanted.....
Varys: same reason as LF
Cersei: No matter how much you throw at her and how stupid she might seem, her son is still on the iron throne

It depends on your interpretation of badassity. In terms of being crazy, warring, let's kill people/who cares about dying badasses then probably Greyjoy. If you mean in terms of living conditions then the Starks because the North is the most hardcore place to live and you have to be badass crazy tough to go through winter there. In terms of devious conspiring and playing the game then I'd go Martell. Doran's control of his family and then plot reveal at the end of AFFC was as badass as anything I've read in the saga. He reminds me of prop Joe in the wire, all business.

Martell obviously! Not only because of the baddassery of characters like the Sand Snakes and Oberyn and Dorne's history of resistence to the Targaryens but also because i think Doran is the only one that actually understands what rulling really means, he is not there just for the thirst of power itself like most of the other characters with power or fighting for it in this series.
