The weird guys inside the House of the Undying sais they had been expecting Dany for a long time, and also said that they sent the comet to help her find the way... that seems proof enough for me that the comet was intended for her, the mother of dragons!

That was an illusion. Those guys didn't exist, it was a trap playing on Dany's delusions of grandeur, that's why Drogon kept her from entering that room.

The actual Undying, the undead warlocks in the final room, never claimed they had anything to do with the comet.

If I had to put my money on it, the comet would be a sign for Dany for the reasons already mentioned in this thread. But for me the biggest effect of the comet was to show how faith and omen-driven the various factions in Westeros are and how much they needed something to believe in.

I think it means something, too. But maybe not so much for Dany and even less for other people. Couldn´t it be simply a sighn of the magic seeping back into the world? I mean there are the dragons now and the pyromancers and warlocks are getting back their powers. Perhaps this is the only link there is to it?

There´s another reference to the comet in Storm of Swords, i just read it yesterday, and that one i buy...
It has some sense to it, given the circumstances.

I also believe that it's just a coincidence.. I think Martin was just showing how people tend to misinterpret some things. In the book, everyone saw the comet as a good sign for them, so.. Maybe he even put it there just to give some kind of strength to the characters. You know, if all of them see it as a good sign, they will be encouraged to do certain stuff.

I am coming to this thread late, but for me the way Martin dealt with the comet illustrates what I like about the series.  I would agree that people interpreted it to conform to their own beliefs, yet some of them were right.  For those who saw it as blood and fire, it wasn't that large of a jump seeing that war was already upon them.  Sort of a self-fulfilling prophesy.  However there were others, particularly Old Nan's interpretation mentioned above that were oddly prescient.  It echos the rest of the world where everything is pretty realistic with just a touch of magic.

I think the comet as refers to Dany also illustrates what is going on here.  She saw it as truly a positive sign, but also noticed the pragmatism of having something to believe in, and using it to encourage her followers into the Red Waste.  Practically speaking it was their only option, but it didn't hurt that the comet happened to be pointing that way.

I'm convinced that the comet does have significance, though I couldn't say what it is at this point.

Another comet was seen when Rhaegar's son Aegon was conceived, which led Rhaegar to believe that Aegon is the prince that was promised. The comet sighting does have a prophetic significance, but I don't think we're meant to know it at this point in the story.

Not exactly everyone.Osha saw it as an "omen for blood, fire and death" or something like that.

Ice(Jon)+ Fire ( Dany)

Oh my gods... I think I just fell in love a little bit more with these books...

Edit: Did I see something somewhere about there being another book after DwD?

I think the comet specifies the return of dragons for sure.

I feel like the comet is only mentioned throughout the first half of the book as an explaination for each character's motives. Each character seems to have their own beliefs regarding it, and I think that's just to put into perspective the character's morals, and values, and whatnot.

To me, the comet did seem to be heralding the birth of the dragons and magic returning to the world.  But...

Agreed. Everyone keeps projecting their own hopes or fears onto it, when it really doesn't mean anything at all. Everyone sees themselves or their allies or their enemies as special, but the skies don't actually care. It's a good way of highlighting how pointless the game of thrones is, in the grand scheme of things.
I also agree with this.   I think it's both.   I thought it was a great illustration of one of the themes of the series-namely, everyone is the main character in their own life, everyone sees themselves  as the hero of the story.  At the same time, I thought it truly was for Dany & the dragons, and this fact didn't take away from the former idea, but rather added to it.  Everyone thinks it's a sign of victory for their chosen king, when really it's a sign of something so much bigger.
