So whats up with Ashara Dayne's purple eyes? Ive not read wiki,so is house dayne somehow related to the targs cause of which she has them?or is it cause of gene mutation...or is she a secret targ oops...
Btw:Ashara's my favourite character cause somehow i just picture her to be very very very immensely HOT! I mean she got ned aroused, she must have been a real bomb....Such a waste the way she dies...and purple eyes rock!

The Daynes have prominent Targaryen blood. So do the Martells, though less physically apparent.

George has said that to his knowledge the Daynes do not have Targaryen descent. He notes that violet eyes can exist in the real world, and specifically he cited Elizabeth Taylor, whose violet eyes were quite famous.

There's the notion floating around that the Daynes may have some sort of Valyrian or proto-Valyrian connection from way, way back. But Targaryen blood? No evidence. I've seen drafts of the Targaryen family tree in particular, and there are no direct Targaryen-Dayne pairings.

I always thought that the fact that Ashara's eye color is mentioned it's only important because Ned saying she was Jon's mother in case the baby would have developed Targ features (like the mentioned purple eyes) would make perfect sense (of course, again, assuming Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna)

Good point.  Except Ned goes above and beyond to not besmirch Ashara's honor, and orders Cat never to speak of her again.  So, if that was the idea, I'd think Ned would've encouraged Cat's belief instead of quashing it.

I think Ned was in love with Ashara but couldn't do anything about it, as he was married.

Yeah the theory has a flaw, I know. Maybe he told Cat cause he felt it was necessary to keep Jon's identity a secret and then as Jon grew up looking as a Stark he thought it wouldn't be necessary anymore to say who Jon's mom was, since his looks were the Stark looks? :dunno:

Don't feel too bad.  I mean all of the males in the family have Valyrian coloring.  And Ser Arthur Dayne and Ashara Dayne were close friends with Rhaegar and Elia respectively (Targ family), so it's not that huge an assumption.

Erm, I'm part Tully part *cringe* Lannister?  Renly had green/blue eyes too - I'd rather be part Baratheon than Lannister.

Auburn hair, green eyes.  Weird pairing, there.

Correct me if I am wrong: aren't purple eyes (and silver hair) quite common around Lys and in some areas of Dorne, as well?

Only the Daynes in Dorne have Valyrian coloring.

Yes, people in Lys and Myr thereabouts have Valyrian blood.  Blue or violet eyes and silver-blond hair is common.  Like Serra, Illyrio's wife, had Dany's coloring, but blue eyes, not violet (and silver-blond hair).

There are also a few Valyrians in Westeros - Velaryon (one of Stannis' bannermen), and maybe a couple others.

ETA:  The Martells have Targaryen blood, so they have the recessive genes, at least, also.  Theoretically their offspring could have Targ coloring, too.

So it seems that the Dayne do not have Targ blood, but damn, Ashara is one, alongside her brother, of the most fascinating characters of the series, I'd so love to learn more about them !

Yes, I'm completely convinced of this. I still want to believe that they had something going on during the war even if she may have had something with his brother or someone else before. Or if they didn't have anything Ned's bitter, "everything was meant for Brandon" comment may also include Ashara's love.

To the OP yes Ashara sounds very beautiful to me. I think her eyes would be very striking with her dark hair. She seemed to be surrounded by men at the Tourney so I think she was well liked. :)

I could be wrong here, but the assertion that the Daynes do not have Targaryen blood does not mean that Ashara doesn't have Targ or even Blackfyre blood as we don't really know who her parents are.

The connection between Ashara's eyes and Aegon's(YG) seems notable but could be a red herring.

So if they don't have Targaryen blood yet violet eyes, then they could be from Valyria, descended from say, some dude who came from across the sea (To nuke on others)

Azor Ahai, it fits with Dawn being lightbringer

To be precise, Ned did not confirm nor deny. While he managed to stop gossip about Ashara among Winterfell staff, the rest of the realm was free to waggle their tongues at will.
Actually multiple contradicting rumors about possible Jon's mothers were quite effective a smoke screen. If one was determined to find the truth behind Jon's parentage, he'd need to follow and verify slash falsify all credible theories. Had Ned claimed Jon was Ashara's (or anyone else's), following that single thread would be much easier. Not a bad play for someone as inept at plotting as Ned Stark.
Which doesn't mean that he didn't have Ashara Dayne's honor in mind as well. But had it been his primary concern, he would openly have stated that he'd never touched her, instead of flatly refusing to answer.
