I am not sure if I am the only one who has had the pleasure of listening to The Coldest War audiobook available from Audible; however, after recently finishing it, I must say that Tregillis is a genius writer. I thought that, like many authors and novels, that the second novel would be a pale comparison to the original...boy, was I wrong. The second book is a blood-pounding, fast paced, and bone chilling novel. And to top it all off, I cannot believe that it was all so well planned since the first novel. Everything fit so well together. So, am I the only one?

Hadn't realized this was out already, or is it just audio? Definitely looking forward to reading it anyway.

As far as I know it's being released in July. My heart goes out to Ian Tregillis...an example of how pubilcation can go terribly wrong because of delays beyond the control of the author.

I'd like to read it, but it's not out yet. I had no idea the audio version was available already, that seems curious.

I read and enjoyed Bitter Seeds. I didn't realize this had come out. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm seeing the release date as July 17th 2012? Are you some kind of Warlock or something?

The Audible version was released a week or so ago, Garlant snatched it up quick.

Why would they release the audio version 5 months before the novel? Rather odd...

I'm upset every time I think about how things came down for Ian. He's not only a viciously talented writer, he was dead professional with his work ethic all the way through that project. I know a lot of writers, and he's the most disciplined one I've ever seen. If there's any justice, the Milkweed books will get a lot of attention. They're great. And I've head a little about his new project which is, if anything, even more ambitious.

First time I heard about Ian, the description was "He writes science fiction the way Tim Powers would if Tim Powers wrote science fiction." I'm not sure how much Ian's stuff has stuck to the science fiction end of the sandbox, but he can handle weird with real grace, and I admire his work.

What happened to him? The only work of his that I've read is Bitter Seeds, which I enjoyed very much. I was unaware of any controversy surrounding the author.

It's a little old, but it gives a pretty even-handed account of his trials and tribulations up to that point. I believe things have been going somewhat better since then, but the initial stumble was pretty epic.

Got in touch with Ian and this strange turn of events is due to the fact that the book's pub date has been postponed time and again. . . :(

If you are a reviewer, he told that ARCs are about to go out.

Just listened to the audiobook. First one I ever listened to, all because I couldn't wait four months for the dead-tree version to come out. It was very atmospheric, great voice actor. As for the story, we learn a lot more about what Gretel has been up to and why she does the things she did. Almost as bad, we learn how. There's a certain insight into how she does what she does that I'm shocked none of the characters seem to have figured it out, specifically regarding her battery use.

Don't want to launch into spoiler-ridden googlewhack territory until there's more people to discuss it with. Any takers?

PS
Does anyone know exactly what the storyline for the Bitter Seeds ARG was? I can't find any details.

Spoke to Ian at Boskone last weekend, a bit about these books and the eventual release schedule. I can't wait for this next book to come out -- in the interim, we picked up an anthology that has one of his short stories in it (the one he read an excerpt from at WorldCon).
