I just finished the last chapter of ASoS. Cersi is almost like a saint compared to Littlefinger, grrrr. Anyways, I am not sure if his motives will be unravled in the next book. But what did Littlefinger what to acheive? Catelyn? What a laborious plan in his part to poison Jon Arryn to get Ned Stark to Kings Landing so he could plot to be with Cat. And Catelyn died anywyas so what will he do know? Is it Power? Did he wanted more power for himslef? Killing Jon Arryn so the Starks and the Lannisters fight their war as he silently rise into power?

I think he wanted revenge on the Starks and Tullys.
Revenge on the Starks for stealing the girl he wanted and for the duel.
Revenge on the Tullys for being denied and sent back home packing.
He is a very driven individual so why stop at anything short of damning their entire families?

I would say he's the smartest character in the series so far. I just finished ASOS too and the plot twists he's involved with are quite surprising and are surrounded solely around his wit. He is able to manipulate people to think and do whatever he wants them too, it's remarkable really.

I think he will definitely play an interesting part to come in the series especially since he holds Sansa now.

But really he's just looking to get the most out of someone that he can. I can't imagine he's looking to rule the realm or anything because that's just not his style but he'll try to weasel his way in somewhere so he can stand behind and control the realm in his own way.

Ultimatley he wants to sit on the iron throne. He now has control of Harenhal, the Eerie and possibly Winterfell with Sansa later on. He wants to rule the 7 kingdoms.

I would say the spot for smartest goes either to him or Varys who in many ways is more enigmatic.

True but everyone is extremely weary and is aware of Varys and his connections and abilities, whereas Littlefinger isn't really seen as much of a problem until people find out first hand.

What Littlefinger wants? Power. He wants to achieve that by all means necessary.

He wants power, that's for certain, and it's clear that he will do anything do achieve it

It seems to me that he does everything for his own amusement. He is playing "The Game of Throne"  against Varys. They do not really want power, they just enjoy manipulating everyone and "one-upping" each other. The other characters are just chest pieces to them.

Tyrion saw through their game and wanted their heads as soon as he became Hand.

I suppose he could have broader motives, but I'm convinced he just wants to bone Sansa.

Ew. Ewewewewew.

It's so hard to tell... which is the great part about a character like Littlefinger. You just never know. Lysa made a point of comparing Sansa to Catelyn over and over and over. Perhaps Littlefinger wants to live out his Catelyn fantasies through Sansa?

No idea... can't wait to find out where this Littlefinger/Sansa plot goes.

Littlefinger drives me crazy.  I can't believe no one has seen through his crap and his motivations and exposed him.  I hate that he has Sansa now; I am hoping that Sansa will realize it and do something but that would totally be out of her character.

Heh if only Sandor hadn't been talked out of taking Arya to the Vale...things would be going a lot differently!

I am so apprehensive about starting AFFC and reading about Sansa and Littlefinger. I mean really how is she going to get out of this one?

KhaleesiDany - you are so right.  If  Sandor had kept going on to the Vale, it may have turned out differently - but I don't know; he seemed to be looking just for money for Arya.

I am also apprehensive about starting AFFC - I just don't know if I am ready to deal with it all.  The only thing that makes me want to start AFFC is to check up on Tyrion.

He's ambitious, I'll give him that. I have no idea what he wants or why he did what he did. It does seem like he wants power; he's certainly come far since his birth.

He wants to be what he would have been had Cat choosen him instead of Brandon. Lord of a Castle with a fair lady at his side. That she can be a spitting image of Cat as a young maiden is but the chery in the cake.

But I suppose he`s been playing the game of thrones for so long he won`t be able to give it up, even after getting all he desires. He`ll die because of it, great player as he may be, dragons aren`t pawns.

That's one part of Baelish's plans, but isn't the end in and of itself.

Shame you have to wait until Dance until you see a Tyrion chapter again then.

Littlefinger likes the game. He thinks he wants power but I think he likes the thrill of the game and that is why he plays.

BTW,

Was Lysa really going to throw Sansa through the moon door? it was never clear to me. She said she did it to Catelyn once ("At least she was brave about it", or something like that), so i thought she only meant to scare her, but when Littlefinger entered the room i was convinced she was going to throw her just so Sansa doesnt steal him from her. BTW, she knew HE kissed Sansa and not the other way around right?
