All I recall hearing about Sothyros is that Yezzan zo Qaggaz got chronic hepatitis there (given his yellow complexion and all the "rotting from the inside" descriptions of his physical condition that sound an awful lot like a combination of end-stage liver disease, morbid obesity, and poor hygiene.

Still, what is up with Sothyros? It's a whole other continent, and I find it hard to believe that nobody lives there. Also if the Yellow Whale could get there (assuming he was not a fully hale and physically fit guy when he went), presumably it's not so far away that it required arduous travel.

We don't know much about Yi Ti or Asshai, but we still know enough about those places--what they export, fashion trends, the dominant religion, the wildlife. All we know about Sothyros is that it's a whole continent, and it's of ill repute, but nobody really knows a whole lot about what's there.

Does anyone have any theories? I want to hear more about Sothyros.

I propose that Sothyros is:
1. Where the Others live
2. Connects with the North via a long neck of land that stretches across one face of the planet.

(Just me being silly)

Terra Australis Incognita, the unknown land of the South. Maybe Sothyros is Australia!

People do live there. It seems that they have diseases there that people from Essos and Westeros have never had. It's basically Africa I guess.

Sothyros is a mysterious place on the map, because George got carried away and used up most of the other mysterious places on the map. If he tells us anything about it then he'll have to plop another continent on the map all the sudden to give us something else to wonder about.

My hope is that Essos, Sothoros(Sothyros?), and Westeros are just an archipelago on a Jupiter sized celestial body, or eye of Ymir or whatever giant.

I guess The North already fits what the presumable fourth continent Northos would be like then...

Yeah, I get that. But...there's a lot of stuff going on in Africa. Are we ever going to hear about any of it?

Maybe. Sothyros gets about as much attention as Africa does in mainstream media. Maybe Martin is hinting at something?

Probably not. And if we did we could assume that it would only be whats along the Northern coast and not the interior. If you look on the map there is a ruined city in the NIle-ish delta.

We don't get very much info about it do we. Looking at the a map from aDwD shows several ruined cities there. We have to assume its hot, can't assume that the ruined cities were native, might have been destroyed by the natives. A tropical climate like that is better suited for small settlements, which are probaly inland so they can't be attacked by pirates and slavers without warning. The Basiliosk Isles which are just North of Southyros are pirate havens, Naath is close by as well, they are almost pacifists by nature. Don't know if there is any relation between Naath and Southyros. We know that Arya sees Mahogany used symbolically in the house of black and white, weirwood face on a Mahogany door and vice versa. Mahogany is an African wood, it could even be possible that people there worship Mahogany trees?

It would be so cool if Sothyrosi people were like the equatorial version of the Northerners! Or that the Old Gods/greenseers exist on a different continent with other trees.

We will see Sothoros when Dany stops there on her way to Westeros and decides to stay for a book or two.

It's pretty much like Africa was in those day's. Hardly any cities, jungles, and most likely the least populus because of all the diseases that are there. People probably live in tribes and kill each other in tribe wars. It was said that Yi TI was southeast of Quarth. That would presumbably put it on Sothoryos.

I think Sothoryos sounds pretty interesting. What little we hear of it is dark, mysterious and disease-riddled.

The main thing I am painfully curious about is the brindled men. Is that war paint? Skin disease? Scarification? I'd love for a character to genuinely encounter one enough that we'd learn a bit more about the continent.

The continent is basically seen as Africa was seen in medieval times, that is, not very much. I doubt we'll see anything going on there since it isn't relevant to the current threads and adding stuff now would be... weird.

I bet the "real" Aegon was hidden somewhere in Sothyros and will make his debut in "Winds of Winter" with an action-packed POV, resulting in a surprise invasion of Dorne.

Well yea, but at least meeting someone from Sothyros would be nice.

Let's fucking hope Dany doesn't decide to visit.

At least Victarion was already in Sothyros - the corsair route he took in Dance is on its northern coast. The Basilisk Isles are linked to it, don't know if the Summer Islands are, or if they are a singular group out in the nowhere.
