All right, I have another theory which ties up a few mysteries. Although if someone else wrote it I might think it laughable.

Benjen Stark fled the North - he had to ditch his blacks which came in handy when he wanted to hand off the dragonglass and horn.  Perhaps he thought he would be back to get them.

He got to Winterfell - perhaps above ground or perhaps via tunnels (grendel's or Brynden's) which connect with the lower levels of the crypts, which we havent seen yet.

He gets out sometimes, wearing a hooded cloak, and cant resist smarting off to Theon.

LW knows where the crypt entrance is, at the foot of the tower, where Bran fell.  Rickon took the Walders there.  LW went nosing around the lower levels and Benjen killed him and brought the body to the surface, where BW found him and dug him out of the bloody snow.  Or BW narrowly escaped a similar fate, or found the body in the crypts, dragged the body to the surface and stuck it in a snowdrift while he went off to think about how to deal with everything.  I am not clear who claims to have found LW, BW or the Frey guy.  Maybe he Frey guy found BW with LW - it is much harder for blood to freeze when it is on a living person's clothes.  Also, the bloody snow.  The extent of blood on BW could be from carrying the body soon after or soon before death or from bloody snow.

Anyway, it's Benjen.  in the lower levels of the crypt.  With a wight.

I needed a weapon for the "Clue" meme and that was the first one that came to mind :)

Someone on another thread said that if he dug LW out of the snow bank he would have been drenched in bloody snow - which seems to be actually a pretty good "out" for BW to be covered in blood yet not guilty.

Not really, since it doesn't explain why Hosteen, the one who actually carries Little Walder, isn't similarly covered in blood from melted snow he's come into contact with.

In addition, there's no mention of Little Walder being buried, just that he was shoved beneath a snowbank.

I didnt say he was buried?  Hosteen would have picked him up after his blood had frozen.  He didnt dig in the snowbank, accompany LW or stuff the fresh body in the snowbank.

Why would Benjen kill him?  Dunno - that;s why I invoked a wight <!>  Maybe he made trouble for Benjen - he is a scamp - and far from random - and if he went poking around the deeper levels of th crypts...

If you have to dig someone out of a snowbank, they're at least partially buried. Not to mention Big Walder never says he dug him out, just that he found him.

Secondly, this doesn't address why the blood would be "splattered" and "caked" on BW. That's a very specific verb, blood only splatters in liquid form.

Thirdly, where does the opportunity for this bloody snow on Big Walder to melt come from? We know the Freys come straight from the murder site, since Hosteen is caked in snow up to his waist when he enters.

LW bled all over the snow.  So it was a bloody mess for BW to dig him out.  It doesnt say he DIDNT dig him out of the snowbank.    Also I have suggested other ways the blood could have gotten on BW - found him dead and carried to the snowbank, etc etc
