Yes, Tyrion agreed silently. Baelor Hightower was no longer young, but he remained Lord Leyton’s heir; wealthy, handsome, and a knight of splendid repute. Baelor Brightsmile, they called him now. Had Elia wed him in place of Rhaegar Targaryen, she might be in Oldtown with her children growing tall around her. He wondered how many lives had been snuffed out by that fart.

Doran is by far one of my favourite characters. I see lots of hate for him on these boards and it makes me sad. I think he is misunderstood. The man is a genius who understands the value of life and remains patient despite his own looming death and chronic immense pain.
Doran is absolutely one of my favorites too, if not my very favorite. It's weird, because I don't really root for characters or hope for certain things to happen in this series. I'm definitely immersed in the story, but I'm not as invested in the individual characters as I usually am with novels, probably due to the sheer number of people and POVs. Mostly I'm up for whatever makes an interesting story. But Seven Hells, am I invested in Doran! I really want to see him recognized (in-universe) as the force he is.
Quick question, though--where does the "looming death" idea come from? Is that specifically mentioned in the books, or is it an assumption based on his age and pain? I only recall the chronic pain, but I certainly could've missed something.
Meanwhile, back on topic... My favorite rarely listed quotes:
Doran: "I dare more than you dream."
Haldon: "And what lesson can we draw from Volantene history?"
Young Griff/Aegon: "If you want to conquer the world, you best have dragons."

For me that's the most powerful quote of the whole first book, and it rounds of my favourite chapter of the book too.
Also for pure laughs...
Varys: "Are you cross with me for abandoning you after the battle?"
Tyrion: "It made me think of you as one of my family."
Tyrion always has the best responses to everything.

Kevan: "Aye, and from what I saw of Joffrey, you are as unfit a mother as you are a ruler."
Jorah: "Can you wake the dead Khaleesi? Your brother Rhaegar was the last dragon."

That's like Woody Allen's line about death and taxes
I like Marwyn's line (paraphrasing): Prophecy! It'll bite your cock off every time.
Comedy genius.
I don't think Littlefinger is as funny as he's painted. He sounds pissy to me.

"Winter is almost upon us,boy. And winter is death.I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned's little girl than alone and hungry int the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that.As for me , I am old. This will be my last winter.Let me bathe in Bolton blood before i die.I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull.I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue". by Big Bucket Wull
