"The wolves will come again," said Jojen solemnly
"And how would you be knowing, boy?"
"I dreamed it".

"I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid."

Fire and Blood was another good one greatest house words ever

in contrast, the worst house words ever have got to be "hear me roar."

Yes, Tyrion agreed silently. Baelor Hightower was no longer young, but he remained Lord Leyton’s heir; wealthy, handsome, and a knight of splendid repute. Baelor Brightsmile, they called him now. Had Elia wed him in place of Rhaegar Targaryen, she might be in Oldtown with her children growing tall around her. He wondered how many lives had been snuffed out by that fart.

"Later, when Arianne had gone, he put down his longaxe and lifted Prince Doran into his bed. "Until the mountain crushed my brother's skull, no Dornishmen had died in this War of the Five Kings," the prince murmured softly, as Hotah pulled a blanket over him. "Tell me, Captain, is that my shame or my glory?"

Doran is by far one of my favourite characters.  I see lots of hate for him on these boards and it makes me sad.  I think he is misunderstood.  The man is a genius who understands the value of life and remains patient despite his own looming death and chronic immense pain.

Doran is absolutely one of my favorites too, if not my very favorite. It's weird, because I don't really root for characters or hope for certain things to happen in this series. I'm definitely immersed in the story, but I'm not as invested in the individual characters as I usually am with novels, probably due to the sheer number of people and POVs. Mostly I'm up for whatever makes an interesting story. But Seven Hells, am I invested in Doran! I really want to see him recognized (in-universe) as the force he is.

Quick question, though--where does the "looming death" idea come from? Is that specifically mentioned in the books, or is it an assumption based on his age and pain? I only recall the chronic pain, but I certainly could've missed something.

Meanwhile, back on topic... My favorite rarely listed quotes:

Doran: "I dare more than you dream."

Haldon: "And what lesson can we draw from Volantene history?"
Young Griff/Aegon: "If you want to conquer the world, you best have dragons."

"He was no dragon. Fire cannot kill a dragon."

For me that's the most powerful quote of the whole first book, and it rounds of my favourite chapter of the book too.

Also for pure laughs...

Varys: "Are you cross with me for abandoning you after the battle?"
Tyrion: "It made me think of you as one of my family."

Tyrion always has the best responses to everything.

Tyrion: "Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength, so that it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it and it will never be used to hurt you."

Kevan: "Aye, and from what I saw of Joffrey, you are as unfit a mother as you are a ruler."

Jorah: "Can you wake the dead Khaleesi? Your brother Rhaegar was the last dragon."

Tyrion: "I'm certain of nothing but winter and battle."

That's like Woody Allen's line about death and taxes :)

I like Marwyn's line (paraphrasing): Prophecy! It'll bite your cock off every time.

Comedy genius.

I don't think Littlefinger is as funny as he's painted. He sounds pissy to me.

"When I was a squire young as you, I had a friend who was strong and quick and agile, a champion in the yard. We all knew that one day he would be a splendid knight. Then war came to the Stepstones. I saw my friend drive his foeman to his knees and knock the axe from his hand, but when he might have finished he held back for half a heartbeat. In battle half a heartbeat is a lifetime. The man slipped out his dirk and found a chink in my friend’s armor. His strength, his speed, his valor, all his hard-won skill... it was worth less than a mummer’s fart, because he flinched from killing. Remember that, girl.”

Asha's chapter in ADWD
"Winter is almost upon us,boy. And winter is death.I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned's little girl than alone and hungry int the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that.As for me , I am old. This will be my last winter.Let me bathe in Bolton blood before i die.I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull.I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue". by Big Bucket Wull

"Trust no one, my prince. Not your chainless maester, not your false father, not the gallant Duck or the lovely Lemore nor these other fine friends who grew you up from a bean. Above all, trust not the cheese monger, nor the Spider, nor this little dragon queen you mean to marry. All this mistrust will sour your stomach and keep you awake at night, 'tis true, but better that than the long sleep that does not end." Tyrion

"Never forget what you are. Certainly the world will not. Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you." ~ Tyrion.
