A lie?  aSoS page 459 - Craster's wives/daughters saying "they" will be here soon for Gilly's baby "the white cold's rising..."  The wives/daughters are referring to the Others as Craster's sons but never say the "Others" by name.

How about the citadel conspiring to rid the world of dragons/magic? Luwin would always shoot down Nan's stories when we now know she was right about almost everything. I actually don't even know if this belongs in this thread.

Actually a good question. Did Luwin shoot down Nan's stories because he thought they were really BS, or did he know they were real but wanted the Stark kids not to believe them?

It's not only about Old Nan - Luwin also disregarded Osha's warnings, then she tried to convince Robb (thro Bran) to march north instead of south (She spoke about White Walkers and Giants).
AFAIR, in AFFC Marvin talked about himself being the only maester who regarded magic positively (maybe Quiburn with his necromancy practices is also in line with him). It does look that the Citadel is strongly opposed to anything magical, and this repulsion doesn't seem to be only theoretically based.

I wonder if Bran's fall from the tower, way back in Game, counts. In his chapter, he isn't really able to figure out what's happening and doesn't identify Jaime and Cersei beyond descriptions that can be somewhat abstract, like the "golden man". After his fall, he cannot remember what he saw or that he was pushed.

We as readers can infer who the figures were, but it takes a while for it to be confirmed beyond our inference. Catelyn deduces that Bran was pushed, but she has no idea yet who or why. The first time we get confirmation is when she speaks to Jaime after Robb takes him prisoner and he confesses to it. After this when we have got Cersei and Jaime's points of view, we see how they reacted to it.

Bran, as far as I can tell, still does not know. So this was a truth, an essential one for the entire series, that was based on our own inferences for a decent chunk of time.

Old Nan also told how wildlings drink blood from human skulls and were into slavery, so gotta be careful with her stories... they seem to be a mixture of actual events mixed with...um, special effects?

I think that proof that Aegon is fake is found in the books.

Ned Stark says "He remembered Rhaegar's young son, the red ruin of his skull.." Remember that Ned was the first in and found Jamie sitting on the throne.  And then Ned finishes "...and the way the king had turned away..."  but there is nothing in the text that suggests that these observations had happened in the same moment. Robert was late to the Red Keep, in time for Tywin to present the bodies wrapped in a cloak.

If no less a paragon than Ned Stark says he saw something, I would take it for gospel. He saw Aegon's dead body. Of course the exact sequence of the otheer events is scattered far and wide.

After a little rereading I woulld like to take the former post back. I beleive that Aegon has a high probability of being genuine and to such a degree that I'm not even sure that this would fit into the "sneaky truth "atagory. But then it is GRRM  writing this. Very little is what it seems.
