Gregor Clegane, Dead or Alive?

It wasn't clear for me either. At some point Cersei is telling Qyburn to prepare his bones to be sent to Dorne, but she mentions that bones are all the same, which made me think that it wasn't actually him...

But in theory he was dying, and no one could do anything for him, and then his bones were sent to Dorne with Ser Balon Swan.

My interpretation was that he is dead. However, I believe that there are some theories floating around about the supposedly "unbeatable champion" that Qyburn supposedly knows (Ser Robert Strong) might be the reanimated Gregor Clegane, simply because of the physical similarities between them, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the Mountain's death.

I'm with you on this one. I think he'll show up again as an undead-Mountain.

I've also just got to the chapter where bones are being sent to Dorne, but I got the strong impression it wasn't really his bones- Cersei encouraged Qyburn to do experiments on him near the beginning of the book, and he has in the past supposedly done experiments which made him lose his title of maester, so I think he's been tampering with some sort of dark magic and yes, I'd agree that an undead Clegane is on the cards...

I just read this part where Cersei says the armorer said no man could carry the armor she ordered, and Qyburn says he will give her a knight no one can withstand . . . kind of echoes Sansa's words about Gregor Clegane at the tournament in Book 1.

:uhoh:

I don't believe that Gregor ever died. The over-sized skull sent to the Martells was the previously mentioned dwarf skull.

Gregor was spared from death by Qyburn's unholy experiments. In saving his life, Qyburn also made him more powerful. He would have to have been made stronger to survive the poison. He never lost his head. His helmet is to preserve the lie that the Mountain was killed. He's not undead. He's something else.

Creepy. Never thought of it that way, but it makes a lot of sense. I am not sure what Qyburn is actually doing, and not sure if "simply an undead" covers the whole truth. I would rather almost expect some sort of half-robot ;) But hey, perhaps then

the Hound can get his vengeance after all (provided both the brothers are alive - or "alive").

I have the same impression , i think he never died or was reanimated by Qyburn.

No spoilers from ADWD please. i don't think we are supposed to know, at this point in the series (end of feast) who Robert Strong is, though of course we all do because you can't go on these forums without stepping in a spoiler.

But, themountainthatflies, I daresay you seem to be a fan of Ser Gregor Clegane. Until i saw your name and avatar I was never more sure of anything than that NO ONE likes Gregor Clegane. Anywhere. Ever. And yet here you are.

I guess you can never really be sure.

Could Qyburn know some about the red gods healing ways? Or he found a way to get rid of the poison, that only dornish know, since he was a maester he might have learned how to cure it.

I personally think that it will have less to do with the red god, and more with blood magic. Blood magic seems far more dark, and isn't that part of the reason Qyburn was blackballed from The Citadel?

Heh, I've been a fan ever since I found out about how he murdered Elia and her children. Gregor.... represents the absolutely unhinged, deranged animal that I think is the flip side to every person. At some point he made a conscious decision to silence his conscience and he's been the way he is ever since. He's unredeemable and his only motivation seem to be the pleasure of killing and raping. He has a sinister ambience or disposition if you will, that few characters in literature possess.
