I had some say to me once that they expected me to 'act the white man' with them and from context it was clear that they didn't expect me to claim their house in the name of the Queen and set up a system of tolls between their kitchen and living room.

What WAS the context? Because it completely mystifies me.

Good point.  It was to do with property maintenance and the guy presumably thought that he could get a better outcome for himself by an appeal to racial solidarity I suppose.  He was an odd bloke anyway, though he did have a good kitchen garden.

More racism.

Rihanna is embroiled in a war of words with Chris Brown's girlfriend.

The You Da One singer - who dated Chris until he assaulted her in February 2009 - appears to have been sending a series of subtle insults at his current girlfriend, Vietnamese model Karrueche Tran.

Earlier this week, she tweeted a photo of a bag of rice cakes wearing sunglasses and with gold earrings, with the caption, "Ima a make u my bitch," which many have interpreted as a jibe at Karrueche.

When a follower then tweeted "@rihanna save me some rice cakes rather hungry," she hit back with the comment: "Kinda DRY tho."

I sorta get the rice cake thing, but the DRY part eludes me completely. Damn, I gotta keep up with today's racist jibes...

I would have figured that one for a sexual jab, not a race-based one.

Easy test to see if the Lin topics should be considered racist.

A black man becomes news when he goes on a streak of chess championships. The media calls attention to this supposedly unusual happening. When he gets accused of cheating a headline screams, "Monkey Business at Chess Tournament?" At the world championship tournament a fan's poster has the man exploding out of a watermelon. When commentators wonder why he is doing so well one of them speculates that it is his ability to stare down and intimidate his opponents.

All racist by nearly anyone's standards. All comparable (at least somewhat) to what happened to Lin. So by my thinking, yep, many of the Lin events are racist.

On using Oriental vs. Asian being a sign of racism?

Sorry, I think this one is a joke (oh and my wife is 1/2 Asian so I MUST know what I'm talking about! :cool4: ). Non-racist names seem to change every so often. My experience growing up in the US was Negro was once appropriate while Black was not, then Black became a bad name for a while while I was in grade school. Then it was ok again. Then it was back to being bad while only African American was appropriate while I was in college. Now it seems Black is ok again. It's almost hard to keep up with them so you aren't accused of being a racist.

Now we have strange things like it's ok to call an African American Black, but you better not call an Asian American Yellow, and if I demand to be called a European American instead of White, why I must be racist.

Myself and my wife have fun making racial jokes about each other (I usually win since she has two races to make fun of). Should we stop because we are potentialy being racist? I think the US might be a better place if we were allowed to make racial jokes and jabs to our friends without being petrified of being called a racist. The US needs to lighten up a bit when it comes to this topic. Of course I'm around 90% Cracker and only a bit Indian (oops Native American), so I must be racist and not know what I'm talking about.

I think it's definitely dependent on where you are and who are with. I'll trade racial jokes with good friends but wouldn't feel comfortable about it unless a member of that race is around and laughing with me or the joke is obviously a joke with no malice behind it.

Nonsense. You can not be a racist and at the same time not know what you are talking about. Obviously.

Bottom line, know your audience. If you do that, you should be fine. But attempting to do so on the scale of the United States and not hurting someone is impossible.

So don't do that.

It ain't rocket surgery.

(words)

I don't understand this post.

So, the portrayal of Lin in the media is akin to the portrayal of the chess player, and both are racist.

But.

It ought to be okay and people should just learn to laugh at these racist portrayals, because we're all just too uptight about it.

What am I missing here?

TW, don't you understand how you're repressing these people, who have to refrain from making racist jokes? How can you compare institutionalized racism stemming from years of justifying colonialism to a good joke about chopsticks?

I think you should temp-ban yourself for a bit and think about what you've done here to this 10% Native American person and his Asian™ wife.

If he starts talking about his Cherokee lineage then I will refer you all to my previous post regarding white people with Native heritage.

Definitely stepped up the game by substituting "friend" with "wife".

I'd like to liven this up with an EU promotional video. It should bring a tear to everyone's eye.

Well, if that ad didn't convince UKIP and groups like that to come into the EU fold, then I don't know what could!

So "chink in the armor" is offensive when talking about a Chinese person because "chink" doubles as a racial slur? Unbelievable how easily offended everyone is these days, getting all riled up over nothing in my opinion.

As a white native Floridian, I find the word "cracker" - regardless of the context in which it is used - offensive, because it also doubles as a derogatory term!

So long as someone is not harming you or your property, who cares?

Did you even read the thread?

I'm guessing, no, you didn't.

But don't let that stop you from sharing your enlightening revelations about race issues with the rest of us. We will pretend that this is the first time we get to read such succinct and insightful condensation of a hugely complex social issue that carries with it over a century of history and cultural antecedents.

You are missing the bold titles that differentiated the two topics. One was on the racist portrayals of Lin (which I agreed were racist). The second was about peeps getting upset at the term of Oriental vs. Asian. I didn't think the name was a big deal even though I DID think the remarks against Lin were.

You don't think it is possible to think one was wrong but not the other??

Close. Cherokee from one parent, Black Foot from the other. After calling up my mom, it seems it was more Cherokee then Black Foot but my % guestimate was very close. No idea what your previous post was, didn't mean to offend, I only mentioned the % due to my post when I was almost going to say I'm "100% Cracker" then recalled I actually wasn't. Yeah, so little knowledge there for me. I think an uncle is the only person in my extended family that still practices some "culture" from our native heritage although a grandparent still has some heirlooms.
