Since the Season 4 thread had maxed out, it seems a good idea to start a new one.

First big news: Alan Ball has stepped down as showrunner/producer following the completion of work on Season 5. He will retain a consultant/advisory credit on Season 6, but nothing more than that. Ball is instead working on a new series, Banshee, for Cinemax and is also developing a drama series about an abortion doctor (which sounds like it will be controversial and inflammatory, right up HBO's alley). His replacement on the show has not been announced but HBO have indicated the rest of the production and writing team will stay in place.

I'm up for some True Blood. I think I may be the only person who still likes it.

Ball was planning on leaving after season 5 anyways, and as poor as season 4 was I don't see this as a bad thing.  The problem is that the rest of the writing staff is sticking around :P  Hopefully they can get the show back to the campy, interesting fun that it was in season 1.

No, I still like it too. I find myself looking forward to June and ready for it to be over by September. So, the HBO shorter seasons are perfect for this show. :)

My friends and I finished out last season because of sheer bloody-mindedness.  If it starts out of the gate shitty, if there's anything as bad as fairies in terrible makeup flinging stupid CGI fireballs in the Southern California desert, we're done.

That's about where I'm at.  I suppose there's always a chance I'll keep going just because it's HBO and it's Sunday night, but my interest waned quite a bit in S4.

Even though the show has gotten to the point where it actually hurts me to watch it sometimes, I am nonetheless 100% positive I will continue to watch it. I genuinely believe the last season was truly abysmal in its badness, but I've invested so much time that I feel like I need to see it through.

Best line of season four:

*Sam turns away from his brother's dead body to peer out the window*

Sam: "I'm so fucking sad."

The subtlety of the show's writing in later seasons is just stunning.

I want to love True Blood again, but damn season 4 was horrid, I'm sick of the love triangle/now polygon. "Sookie I'll sacrifice myself for you" " NO! Sookie let ME sacrifice myself for you!" -_- just kill Sookie and all your problems are solved! :) I admit I'm excited for next season, my favorite villian returns.

My wife is in this category as well.  In fact, this is the only American tv show that she likes.

SPOILERS!

I don't care how bad S5 is, Russell's back! The preacher guy is back!

I will say I'm happy Bill got less whiny last season. I was not happy he stole some of Eric's badassery to get it. Poor Eric got castrated.

Thank God no more Tara.

I hear you about this. Last season was incredibly cheesy, but as long as they keep showing Anna Paquin's breasts, I'll keep tuning in.

Russell returning was alluded to was it not?

Anyhow, Russell was the highlight of S3.  His speech was one of the greatest things I've ever seen on TV.

If by "alluded to" you means spelled out without any equivocation, then yes.

I'm still in mourning for the death of my attraction to Eric. :crying:

But yes, I will continue watching.  I'm interested in finding out what they are doing with Steve Newlin this season.

I still haven't even bothered to watch the S4 finale.  I skimmed it, so I sort of recall what happens, but to me the episode stands out like the rest of season four:  it doesn't.  What a mess that was.

There is always that.  No matter how cheesy-bad the show may get, you can always count on it for beautiful naked people.

I'm really looking forward to Season 5- I admit I've always had a soft spot for vampires(of the non Twilight variety though), Season 4 wasn't very strong but I enjoyed 3 and particularly like others have said-Russel which is why I'm looking forward to the new Season so much as the whole witch storyline just bored me.

In the written series book gets progressively worse and so far the show has been following that path.  I'm not optimistic that it is going to reverse the trend.  I'll still watch it, but I will do so begrudgingly.

I agree with you, I think True Blood is one instance where the TV/Film is better than the book series it was based on.
