Map of Ice and Fire

Hi ScrollsofA,

Nice one!

I see you already found out how to upload. It was probably harder to figure out in which article you wanted to include it. But I think that the portal is the right one.

Cheers,

Scafloc

That is a very nice map ScrollsofA, I tried to make one myself and it's nowhere as good as yours. At the moment we are working to include a google like interactive map, based on the map our Russian sister wiki made, we already made 10,000px x 10,000px tile based map for various zoom levels(that is if I mange to sell the bigger map idea, which already atracted objection by Ran and Werthead) and at the moment we are looking how to integrate it with the maps extension we are using(to make the maps as easy to use as possible) maybe you can help creating a layer for it and/or improve our current maps as well.

Can't wait to see it. I used to think about "Google Map Style Westeros" but I had no idea how to make it.

And To OP, you did a good job.

On LGDN, we are working too on an interactive Westeros vectoriel map on the same model that our map of Winterfell or King's Landing.

On these maps, you can move your mouse on different elements to see some text appear ; and even if you left-click on it, go to another wiki article. It's not used for Winterfell or King's Landing maps because there is not an article for each part or road of the cities, but on a larger map, it will be possible to go to the Winterfell article by clicking on the localisation of Winterfell on the map.

@ScrollsofA : Wonderfull looking map !

I strongly suggest "google like" map like version with markers, vector everything is great especially for scalability but if you want to make anything big and remotely detailed and not rape your server/users, "google like" map is how you should go.(no point to argue with success and performance stats). I suggest to keep working with vector map, because it easy to update(I believe that the original russian map is vector as well) then export it to PNG i.e. the base map and various layers with transparency and use some kind of a tool like Map tiler to do the hard work for you.

What extension are you using to incorprate tha map into your mediawiki? (we are using Extension:Maps)

What is the scale/ratio of the map you are using ? it would be nice if we can use a standard one so we use the same layers/coords and make all of our life's easier.

Any tips suggestions?

At this time, we just use imagemap. I'll have to check the possibilities of "Maps", I actually dislike the design too modern, especially the ugly "pins", but if there is real advantages, why not.

IIRC the map size is 1500x660, and there is only Westeros, not Essos or the Free Cities. I'll show you if you want.

Booth modern and fancy maps have their use.

If I want to show where a certain castle / town / river is I prefer a clear, modern map. For instance see the King's Landing article where we have a map of the crownlands with a marker for King's Landing. We use this method to show where a certain place is. The current map that we are using there has room for improvement so if that is possible with the google interactive map; great!

A fancy map such as the one of Scrollsofarya is better for showing a complete region. And how it is perceived, the impression that it makes if you like.

  • 1 month later...

While we wait and see what GRRM map collection will bring us and try to figure some technical stuff, HBO has released their Map , which should pretty close to what GRRM officail maps would be. So far absent of good map resource, we havent given the various geographical locations on essos enough attention, it might be a good time to review them ;)

The map is very wrong as far as the far east of Essos goes.

The lakes in the Dothraki sea are not where Vaes Dothrak is located -- it's further east on GRRM's map, in areas that HBO's maps have as a great chain of mountains; GRRM has pushed the Dothraki sea a bit further east, basically. The Jade Sea is all wrong, as are the Jade Gates.

I will say that Ib is spot on, though GRRM's map adds a smaller, adjacent island to the east named Far Ib that HBO's map does not feature.

That may give a bit of sense of where GRRM started changing things last month -- you can kind of cut a line down from the middle of Ib, say (down through the peninsula south of it), and straight down and by my eyeballing of the real world map and HBO's it looks more or less correct. And Ib itself is okay, probably because that's drawn on a spearate piece of paper and so was not effected by his changes to the main continent.

But everything east of that is wrong.

I admit that lb location is a surprise, at first glance I didnt even realized that this huge land mass is it, confusing the two little ships in between...

Anyway, I just wanted some help updating some of the free cities and slaver bay location articles we have, so as long as they nailed the alignment between the two regions, I think this will do ;)

So going by Ran's info, this is effectively canon for the books. You can also obviously extend the map south and include the part of Sothoryos we see on the ASoS/ADWD maps.

And yeah, the lakes is where I put Vaes Dothrak on the first spec maps from the new info because it seemed the most logical place. I've since updated with the HBO location instead.

I think it's as close as we can get, here I made a map with Sothoryos and pushed Vaes Dothrak east ward. http://i40.tinypic.com/6ehdet.png

However you should note that while the HBO maps have similar shape and ratio, they are different from those in the books. It's not something that matters if you just want to show the location of some region(for that matter, I too went for visible over precision) but on higher resolutions it matters.

Is the Womb of the World ever described as being 'huge' though? Even if it's the size of a city, it's unlikely it would show up on the scales we are talking about here. Even Gods Eye barely shows up on these kind of world/continent maps and that's 100 miles wide. If the WotW is much smaller it should only appear at higher resolutions.

Ran, would you be able to confirm if the bit of land south of the Jade Sea and south-east of Qarth in the HBO map is supposed to be Sothoryos or not? I meant to ask GRRM at the con and plain forgot.

Fair enough :)

As GRRM said in the interview, the motive for changing that area was because he wanted to make it more interesting for readers. Having tons of green with just 'DOTHRAKI SEA' on it was apparently unsatisfying, so he's been adding various ruins and other locations. He didn't say much about changing the landmass, but if we assume the HBO map was based on his older maps it certainly looks a little less interesting on the older version.
