Every now and then when I'm reading a chapter, out of the blue I come across a passage that just gets me right smack dab in the middle of my heart.  Quite often the passage connects 2 different books, and it only strikes home because I'm doing a re-read.

The most recent example for me was reading a Daenerys chapter in ADWD, where Ser Barristan is telling Dany about the Targaryens he's known, and she asks who her parents might have married  had they not been destined to marry each other.  To my  great astonishment, Ser Selmy tells Dany Queen Rhaella had been named the Queen of Love and Beauty by a knight at a tournament, and from the description it could only have been Ser Bonifer Hasty.

I previously had seen Jaime's thoughts about Ser Bonifer at Harrenhall where he thinks about the stories he's heard about Ser Bonifer, how he had been a good knight in his youth but had put aside tournaments and jousting because of some event that happened in his past.  The fact his heart was broken because Rhaella married her brother was the last thing I ever expected, and because it came out of the blue like it did I found it very affecting.

There are many touching scenes GRRM slips in, some big, some small like that one.  Another scene that brought a tear to my eye was the conversation between Jon Snow and Ygritte as she dies in his arms.

What scene did you find caught you in the throat?

Edit: sp

Oh gods so many!
Random ones that pop in my head:

The entirety of Septon Merribalds speech in AFFC
Sam's speech after Maester Aemon's death on the ship
Oberyn during the fight with the Mountain, always repating that one line and "Elia"
When Bran & Co emerge from the crypts after Winterfell burned and he says it's not dead, just broken...

I'm too tired so I'm probably forgetting all the biggies! (oh btw Ned death + RW ofc!)

Edit: Ah, how could I forget the animals! Lady's death, Theon seeing Smiler with the burning mane...ah I'm such a wuss when it comes to animals!

Ned lying in the mud and rain, cradling the dead body of Jory Cassell. Gets to me every time.

Oberyn shouting "Elia" while fighting Gregor, for me too. Especially with the ending that follows.

Theon wondering back to where he was when Robb died, thinking that he should have been with him.

Robb carrying Bran up to his bed, and the conversation about them going to see Jon at the Wall.

Tyrion thinking it was Jaime who saved him at the Battle of the Blackwater knowing that only his brother would love him enough to bother to save him.

Bran looking at the ruins of Winterfell and knowing that its broken but not dead, just like him.

Is it worrying that a few of Sandor's scenes brought a tear to my eye? :leaving:

All of Theon's chapters make me want to weep - I found them really, really difficult to read.  I had to skim them at first, and then slowly go back and dip into them.  I can still remember the moment I read those words about how he should have died with Robb.  Maybe I'm just a big suck, but those words hurt.  The Theon chapter in TWOW grabs at my throat too, I can't wait to read the whole chapter.

And Tyrion thinking of Jaime at the battle made the jail break scene and the hard feelings over Tysha so much worse.

Jon feeling as a boy again when he thinks Alys may be Arya.

On rereads Robb talking about his plan to retake Moat - he was so hopeful.

Aemon hearing about dragons and being unable to reach them.

Weasel being lost.

What made me really sad after they came out, is when they came across Maester Luwin dying and there was no way to save him. He told them to go and leave him to die… And after that, if I’m not mistaking, the kids go and leave Osha alone with him… So I’m pretty certain there’s a mercy killing going on at that moment, which is better then to die a long and painful death, but still sad.
Another caring adult figure gone from Bran and Rickon’s lives… :crying:

I found his last scene with Sansa quite touching as well. I don't know - it's so easy for me to see him as a monster, and then every now and then he does something completely random, like showing fear or crying or explaining himself to a child, and I just tear up :crying:

I am trained not to feel things too much, but there still are moments that get me, they just do it some time after in not proper places :tantrum:

Damn Jory, Ygritte killing the hostage for Jon, Arya thinking that Catelyn and Robb might not want her wild and dirty, Gendry thinking he is not good for Arya, Theon thinking he should have died with Robb.

Mostly whe people can not find where they belong or die on me. I am again talking about stupid Jory.

Obviously I'm normally too manly to be upset but there's more than a few emotional moments in the series.  And a few more that I'll probably only remember with some prompting.  I find it easy to forget upsetting things!

Stand outs include;  Cat thinking how much Ned liked her hair, Maester Aemon waking up and thinking Egg was there, Gilly's general bravery, Theon remembering his role in Robb's rebellion and Oberyn's grief for his sister.

I even thought it was sad when Dany remembered Viserys as her brother and a person and not the maniac that he turned in to.

And of course I felt for Darkstar being overlooked and upset that the only Dayne anyone remembered was Ser Arthur of the Kingsguard!  Poor lamb.

@AFree Shadow
Are you thinking of Jory Cassell, killed by Lannister troops or about Yoren?  I kept confusing the two.

When Jon finds Ygritte dying after the battle of Castle Black, Catelyn's last chapter in ACoC when she hears of Rickon and Bran's deaths, and most of Theon's chapters, those were pure gold.

Forgot, almost all of the Northmen's deaths in King's Landing during the coup. For some reason I felt that Fat Tom's death was saddest, even more than Jory's.
