Chrys, some people don't like it because on the surface it looks like a really poor weather report. Of course, the Stark words don't refer to the weather at all, but that's another story.

So Shakespeare and the writers of the King James bible were too early to get the memo -- Dickens had no excuse. And since GRRM is using whence to impart an archaic tone to his characters, he has no excuse, either.

And you do know it should have been "woe is I," right? ;)
"Far to the North are the Grey Mountains & the Withered Heath whence came the
Great Worms."  Typically pitch perfect, but even He That Came Before let slip an errant train and pocket here and there.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but for me the most annoying saying by far is: "I am but a young girl and know little of the ways of war".
The fact that Dany actually thinks that this is wrong -it's not- makes it even more annoying

This is mine as well.  It's even worse than her mother of dragons spiel.

Two of my top irritants have already been listed above, but here I go anyway: 1) "not wrong" and "not right" suddenly ubiquitous (kinda like S.R. Donaldson discovering "puissant") and 2) nearly everybody speaks in the same voice, from idiom to vernacular.  My formerly biggest irritant: "Robert."  Took me a while to get past that jarring, I'm-not-in-Oz-anymore name.  Right or wrong, loudly English sounding names are one of my biggest discriminators in choosing a new fantasy read.  Jon, like Samwise, gets an honorable exception... (yes, I understand Tolkien's philological misgivings re: hobbit names, but I fear that discussion strays too far afield...).

As an aside, anybody else notice Jon unsheathing his sword twice on the same page (whatever late in the book page that was) in DWD?  Editors, I fear, have long since left the field of battle...

"i am the blood of the dragon" :ack:  I did not think it could possibly get any worse but then GoT happened. The way she says it; I just want to tear my hair out. The single most annoying thing on TV. And I mean it.

Also "The night is dark and.... OMG! WE GOT IT!!" Which also got worse on TV.

"bedded and wedded" or vice versa
"I am blood of the dragon"
"I am nearly a man grown"
And also any time someone corrects "m'lord" and tells them to say "your grace". It sounds overly arrogant, both phrases show respect

I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be.  It's supposed to convey that they are less than the king and show that (whichever) king is supposed to look down on them.  It's only used when enforcing authority with a heavy hand.

After awhile in the Dunk and Egg tales I got a bit sick of "Oak and ironc guard me well, or else I'm dead and doomed to hell" or whatever metal it was. Even the first time, it was just like "Ok? :dunno:"
