I took a look at the Season 2 casting video and saw the face of a handsome young actor playing a character I couldn't ever remember reading about, Alton Lannister.  So I checked the Wiki, and yes indeed, there seems to be no such character.

Since we have a couple of weeks still before the start of Season 2, shall we have some fun speculating on who this young man might be?  A new character created by GRRM for the HBO series because of a plot line we don't know about?

He's the youngest son of Tywin Lannister when Tywin secretly wed a high born lady on the 10th anniversary of his beloved Joanna's death.  He never told his family about her because he didn't want them to know he was more human than he ever wanted to admit, and needed the touch of a loving woman. Oh my, the things we do for love!

In the end, it will be Alton who is the Valonqar, because Jaime and Tyrion are such loved characters GRRM decided to spare them that role.

Have fun!  I don't think this is fan fiction, HBO should tell us who he is!

Well, if you go look under news and there's a line item about more videos (the most recent ones) there are 3 or 4 new videos with character focus.  Once you look at I think any of the videos, at the end of the video a screen comes up with thumbnails of 6 or 7 other GOT videos.  Every time I looked at it, there was a picture of an auburn long haired girl on the bottom row at the right.  She's playing Gilly.  That video shows some of the new cast members for Season 2.

For those interested Alton Lannister is at 1:57 but searching Karl Davies on IMDB will get you the same image.

One idea I'd heard on Winter is Coming was that Alton Lannister fills the role for both Tyrek Lannister and Cleos Frey.

My guess is that when Robb sends him to KL, he stays there and later disappears in the riots.

The only purpose of Cleos beyond this point is to bring those soldiers back for Jaime's escape attempt in Riverrun (and since Robb's taking Jaime west on campaign with him in the show, I'm assuming they're skipping that) and to die so Jaime can have a sword to fight Brienne. That role can easily be filled by any random dead soldier outside of Maidenpool

I'm guessing he's been renamed Alton since Tyrek sounds too similar to Tyrion.

You know, thats not a bad theory.  Cleos Frey still sounds like a good bet, but this is another possibility.

Having the lannister boy as a larger character might add some more impact to his murder by the Karstarks and prevent audiences going- "Wait a sec, was there a reason Robb just cut his buddy's head off?"

They haven't gotten to the part where he arrives at the Lannister camp and decapitates Lord Tywin with a single swing of his axe.

That would surprise me.  Tyrek is a pretty unimportant character, like Lord Gyles or Lady Tanda; doubt they'd waste the TV budget.

I think he is filling in for Ser Cleos Frey so that when Tyrion and Cersei call him "cousin", the tv viewers aren't confused.

Yup, yup.  I still wonder if he's gonna also be the one...

D&D created a whole new character, rather than just change Cleos's surname to Lannister.  Doing that makes more sense to me if it was because they intend Alton to be a composite of more than one character from the books.  Tyrek is also a possibility, except his disappearance is such a seemingly unimportant aside that I doubt it'll make it into the TV adaptation at all.
