Shiera Seastar is described as a very cunning woman, and Melisandre, while not stupid, doesn´t strike me as so cunning, just knowledgeable and with the advantage of her divining powers.

also from her pov we get that she's really serious about her red god religion. nobody who has lived a few hundred years and is cunning is likely to suddenly fall for a new religion.

I would say that she is pretty cunning. I think that she has been manipulating Stannis' every move since the moment they met.

Being able to manipulate a king to fight your battles for you is a pretty cunning plan.

When I heard that Mel was going to be a POV in Dance with Dragons, I was interested.  I thought we could finally found out where this crazy chick came from, and what her motives really were.  Turns out... not so much.  She's actually pretty straightforward, a crazy magician for the Red God.  It definitely wasn't a viewpoint changing revalation like with Jaime.  Too bad.

Still, at some point or another we will have to learn where she came from.

I wonder whether her permanent glamour most likely used to hide her true age glamours her visions as well; i.e. she interprets wrongly because she's glamoured when doing so?

I hope we get a Melisandre chapter in TWoW and she locks the door to her chambers and takes off the ruby.

Mel as the personification of the crone - not pretty.

Does anyone think the ruby might be Rhaegar's missing one? There's power in King's blood and the rubies presumably would have been soaked in it after the trident

I think you misunderstood the purpose of the Melisandre POV. It had nothing to do with learning about her, she was needed as a POV to learn about Jon and to have a POV at Jon's location while he is out of commission.

I hope so. I want to know what is going on in Mel's head. Plus, her chapters will have a lot of Stannis in them too. I want the proof that she is Stannis's puppetmaster.

I've theories of Mel being a fire wight as the blood wcich runs from her thighs when she's giving birth to the Shadowbaby in ACoK.
If she is, that would mean there's an obvious use for glamor.

I just realised. If this is true...
Poor, poor Stannis.

I'm sure its been mentioned before but I couldn't find a thread.

Melisandre is definetly using a glamour to conceal her true identity because we are constantly told that the ruby on her neck is radiant and pulsing.  And when we find out Rattleshirt is Mance we are told that glamours usually involve a precious stone or pendant.  (I think he had a pulsing stone on his arm... though i could be wrong)

My question is if Melisandre is a random person from Westeros why would she conceal her identity.  Unless she was someone that is at least semi-famous.  Who could she be.  Wild theories encouraged.

Oh I think she is definitely using a glamor...as she is never mentioned as having the facial tatoos that EVERY OTHER red priest/priestess has...but it is to hide her age and true features not because she would be recognized in Westeros.

Well, not every other red priest has facial tattoos.  Thoros doesn't.  I think the facial tattoos are an indication that one is or once was a slave.  We have from Mel's POV that she was once sold at auction - Lot 7, etc.  I think Mel is someone who has received the "kiss of fire".  I think that's the explanation for her not needing to sleep or eat, radiating heat even in the north, etc.  The glamor is definitely to conceal her true image and give a much more "seductive" image.

I also would like to know who she is. Her ability to see in those flames is pretty on point. I was reading A Clash of Kings today and got to the part where Stannis is asking Ser Penrose to yield Storm's End. When Stannis sits to talk with Davos he tells him this with regards to Renly:

"Was, would have, what is that? He did what he did. He came here with his banners and peaches, to his doom...and it was well for me he did. Melisandre saw another day in her flames as well. A morrow where Renly rode out of the south in his green armor to smash my host beneath the walls of King's Landing. Had I met my brother there, it might have been me who died in place of him."

This obviously happened, with Garlan as 'Renly'.

She also knows about the walls of Storm's End. As Davos is rowing her to Storm's End he asks her, "Who rowed you to Renly?"
"There was no need," she said. "He was unprotected. But here...this Storm's End is an old place. There are spells woven into the stones. Dark walls that no shadow can pass-ancient, forgotten, yet still in place."

Is it widely known that the walls of Storm's End have spells? And if it is, is it believed? And how would a priestess from Asshai know about them and how to beat it?

Melisandre might be..."the most interesting woman in Westeros".

In a serious note, the walls have spells to repel the storms. Theres a quote in ACoK that Bran the Builder might have built it

I'm aware of that. I was wondering if it's widely known in Westeros and if it's coughed up to myth and legend? If it's not widely known, how would Melisandre know?

She knows about the Others, The Wall and Storm's Castle. Bran the Builder factors into all three of those and of course he's associated with the Long Night. Not trying to start a crackpot theory, just thinking out loud. Melisandre's story is one I'll be paying a lot of attention to.

I also think it may be related to her being a revived by fire individual.  Explains a lot of her perceived magical abilities and her AA obsession.

Do we know if Beric had that ability? I don't think Thoros did, he simply would keep bringing Beric back to life.
