I always envisioned Essos as a combination between Asia and Northern Africa, the Colossus of Rhodes reminds me of the Titan of Braavos but also Rhodes reminds me of Sunspear and Donre because of the warm climate and the fact that Rhodes is the meeting point of West and East. The island has been influenced equally by Ottomans and Franks, just like Dorne combines rhoynish culture with westerosi.
Monembasia, a city in Greece is to a certain extent similar to Casterly Rock.
Vale for me is a combination etween Meteora-Greece and Zhangjiajie-China.

Braavos is clearly medeival Venice, which was the banking capital of the world at the time as well as the canals and strutting swordmen on the streets.

I think Braavos is a mix of Amsterdam and Venice.

Charlemagne then :cool4:  ( and Louis XVI was a ruthless war monger too)
I wish Martin had skipped the Gilles de Rais/Ramsay reference though :blushing:

Dorne sounds like the south of Spain to me (Andalucia) , not just Spain. I'm from the north and it's very different here, more similar to the North of Westeros than to Dorne.

Where are you from exactly? ¿De qué província?

About Dorne being Spain... it could be, but an alternative-medieval Spain. But Madrid's not Sunspear, that's for sure. It's more like... Instead of fighting the Arabians, a Spanish King had married an Arabic princess and then we had all got mixed. Southern Spaniards got mixed with the Arabians 'cause they lived there, but it didn't happen the same thing in the North... And Madrid became an important city in Spain when it was made the capital city, and that was after the Arabians had been sent out.

My dad's from the North of Spain, North-West (Asturias), and he has brown hair and light blue eyes. My maternal grandfather is from the South, and he has pale skin and green eyes, they'd be Salt Dornish :P  My grandma has got long dark hair and is quite tanned, so she'd be a Martell-like Dornish.

My skin is darker than the average English/German/Scandinavian guy, but it's not dark either, and I've got light brown hair and green eyes. It's not that simple: Madrid --> Sunspear LOL xd

Braavos would be venice historically because of the geography of the city and seafaring and trade. also it could be Amsterdam because of the previous reasons put also for diversity.

came across this http://upload.wikime...ise.600.700.jpg image, if we take England as a backbone then the "tribesmen are in rheged, a territorial family-based Celtic kingdom, this would put winterfell somewhere in mid - Lancashire bear island as the isle of man and white harbor on a bigger version of the tyne, as it stands all these places are far to warm thanks to the gulf stream, but without that the climate would be about right (possible need moving up to the latitude of Sweden, apart from that this is a pretty good shape, or you can take lower Scotland to be the north and use the other wall as a landmark further north, this makes more sense as then the firth of forth is white harbor and northumbria lower north/the neck, but GRRM was inspired by hadrian's wall.
