Thank you NCAA rules committee!

Quote

That’s one reason the rules committee is reasserting guidelines on what constitutes a charge and asking for referees to be re-educated on how the play should be called. It will be one of the most important points covered this fall at the NCAA’s four regional refereeing seminars; all college basketball referees must attend one session to be eligible to work the NCAA Tournament.

And this shit blows my mind...

Quote

Grading of referees for the 2012 NCAA Tournament showed they got an impressive 90 percent of all calls correct — even though they got block/charge calls right only 65 percent of the time, NCAA referees coordinator John Adams told Sporting News this week.

In other news, The Sporting News website has gone to shit.  All of those mid story links and headlines are fucking ridiculous.

The big news around here lately is that the Kentucky/IU series is coming to an end.  Ultimately, Coach Cal wants to get more neutral site games on the schedule.  Specifically, he has been quoted as saying that he wants his team to play at least twice in "football arenas."  His reasoning is that the NCAA insists on playing the late tournament games in that venue and he doesn't want a young team that could win it all to fall victim to an unfamiliar environment.  To that end, UK is now scheduled for a mens/womens double header this fall against Baylor in Cowboy Stadium.  I understand what Calipari is saying about a schedule that prepares for success, but I'm not certain I understand why we have to replace Indiana and UNC instead of replacing Stony Brook and High Point and their ilk.  :dunno:

But... he brought us title number 8 and says we're chasing UCLA now; so I'll continue to trust him.

Don't worry. Coach K can still use his natural charm on the refs.

That's what I don't get - the man is like half an inch taller than a leprechaun, far surpasses Frank Burns in the "ferret face" competition and yet still is intimidating to refs.  I'll take it...but it's mind boggling.

Cal's reasoning makes sense that he wants them prepared for that challenge, but couldn't agree more about the opponents.  It's a lot of fun to see a Duke/UK/UNC/etc elite team put up a buck ten on some schleps but they hardly get the blood flowing.

Rhom, enjoy your new conference buddies!  That athletic department is a fucking mess if they can't google and figure out this guy they're letting tag along on their chartered flights, and have free tickets to games has a history of drug-related arrests.

My favorite part of that story is the look on the old guy's face in the lead picture.

Hey now, that's Max Faulkenstein.  He was our radio announcer for over 60 years.  (I also think that was taken at a point in the game where Missouri had a big lead, and I imagine the fat coke dealer is thinking something along the lines, "We're up by 19!  There's no way we blow this!!")

Here's a great tweet from Sean Miller a few days ago:

I keep asking myself, what is my stance when our players begin wearing these ridiculous "post game presser glasses" in the future?

These numbers are pretty mind blowing.

Quote

And according USA Today, this year’s transfer rate was 10.9%. Perhaps more telling, however, is the fact that 40% of freshmen basketball players never make it to the end of their sophomore season. Just 2% leave to play pro ball, meaning that about 27% of incoming freshmen end up leaving school for something other than a professional contract of another scholarship.

That is truly alarming.  All the sports talking heads like to act like a handful of kids leaving to make millions of dollars is the death of the sport and a true travesty to the educational system; but when you see numbers like this you start to realize where the real problem is.  The other 38% that are transferring or dropping out of school are the ones that are truly being given a disservice.  Many of these kids are the ones that need an education to fall back on and they aren't getting it.

Holy shit.

I am absolutely floored by that number.  Forget about the transfers for a moment.  Why are so many college basketball players just dropping out of the system altogether?

Are too many people that look like potential D-1 players in high school heading in to college absolutely unprepared to handle anything but basketball or something?

Imagine a stadium full of every incoming scholarship player in the nation like the NFL rookie symposium.  Chris Carter is up there talking and he says "More than 1 out of 4 of you won't just not be in the NBA, but more than 1 out of 4 of you won't be playing college basketball either."

That is nuts.

That's just insane.  Almost as insane as Calipari fellating himself on twitter:

Quote

I want to apologize to all the recruits this week. I'm spending the majority of my time answering questions from NBA teams about my six guys

Apparently that's what they call a "humblebrag"

Humblebrags are hilarious.  One of the bets parts is how oblivious the offenders seem to be.

The athlete dropout rate is alarming, and is higher than the non-athlete, but it is 1 in 4 freshman that drop out before the end of the year.  So yes, there is a specific problem with athletes, but the problem isn't specific to them.  From my experience first as the student then as a coach at a D1 school, kids are just not prepared for the culture shock of going to college and the freedom.  It is weird because in a way I would expect the athletes to have it easier since there are so many failsafes in place - studyhours, call trees, coaches calling for wake ups, etc.

Every once in a while there is a Larry Bird that drops out of one school and later attends another, but most are 1 and done

That is true.  I had plenty of friends who decided to "take a year off" after their freshman year and never made it back, but athletes have so many built in advantages that the general population doesn't have access to.

So this sounds bad for Kansas.

Any chatter in your local circles about this REG?  Is it as bad as the article makes it sound, or is it more or less a hatchet job by the author?
