At first i thought he was some wildling or some wight or even some other creature we have not heard of yet, or even a greenseer cause he knows about Bran and his companions, but then i realized he knew about the secret Nights Watch´s tunnel and how to open the door to it, and the fact that only a Nights Watch man can pass through it made me start to believe that he was once a member of the Watch.

Could he be Benjen Stark? Has anyone thought about this? Obviously he is not the same man, something must have happened to him (something magical certainly) but it might explain why he knows so much about the Night´s Watch.

I dont want to google him cause i might get spoiled and i certainly dont want that, just wanted to see if anyone else thought about him being someone we already met in the books.

I recently started A Feast for Crows, and in the chapter list there is one listed as "Coldhands". I haven't gotten that far yet, but I personally believe it's Benjen Stark. That's really the only option that makes sense to me.

It's a common theory yes, probably something we get to know in the final books.

There is no chapter title that is even close to Coldhands.

Oh wow, you're right. I have no idea where I even got that from. When I read your post I was like "What!? Of course there is! Let me prove it!" and grabbed my book. I then proved myself wrong, haha. Thanks for the correction! Nevertheless, I still think it's Benjen. With all the "Stark honor" he's the only character I can see resisting the Other's attempts to turn him into a wight.

You can politely decline, and if your courtesy is good enough - say, Sansa levels - then they might let you keep your soul. Other than that, you're as good as their bitch.

It is well known that wights do have certain memories from their lifetimes retained(we can see this in A Game of Thrones, when the wight tried to assasinate Mormont specifically), whether or not Coldhands IS a wight, remains to be seen.

On the theory of Benjen Stark, it is plausible.

Supposedly Craster left his sons in the snow where the others would take them, some theories in the herecy thread say that this is how others are made, but I'm not convinced

We'll never know till good Ol' Martin writes it, so for now we can only speculate.

It was never explicitly stated, it was more of an assumption based on deductive reasoning. And no, seeing as you're forcibly turned into a wight after death I seriously doubt anyone can refuse. My statement about Stark honor was meant a little sarcasticly.

Yeap I'm also on the Benjen Stark beeing Coldhands and if not that than I'm going for some Child of the forrest, but why keep mentioning Benjen if he isn't going to play an other part. He wasn't a major character right. Just started DwD now so maybe I'll read something on this subject in the Bran chapters.

It wouldn't be the first time GRRM made reference after reference to a character only to have them die suddenly or just never resurface. Anyone remember Rickon?

With that said, I'm with you on this one. It really seems like GRRM must have SOME plan for Benjen to resurface. It seems a tragic waste of ink if not.

I just got to this part when I was reading last night. I also think, or hope, that it would be Benjen Stark. I think the story is at the point where Benjen would be great to come out from where he had been.

I'm w/you Xtopher...I think he's Benjen Stark as well. It makes the most logical sense since he has knowledge of the Night's Watch and Bran and Co. I had kinda given up on Benjen honestly. I thought well we'll never see him again, but this seems like a possible appearance.

If he actually were Benjen. How in the hell did he turn into that "thing"?
He is a Stark so we know he´s not some exotic guy from Asshai that dominates the arts of magic, not even a follower of Rh´llor. I hope that if it actually is him they explain with lots of detail how he changed into that. For Bran not to have recognize him means he doesnt even look like him anymore.

Didn't he have a hooded cloak on though? Still I agree Bran should;ve at least recognized Benjen's voice. So he must have gone through some transformation that made him unrecognizable. Hopefully, should it be him, it'll be explained.
