You have control over Jaime for 30 seconds after Aerys gave the order to burn KL.

But in reality, I'd probably talk some sense into Aerys and make him see the error of his ways over a cup of coffee. I'm sure he'll understand.

What's also worth considering is Jaime was ordered to bring Aerys Tywin's head.

And not to sit on the throne.
And to tell the truth when Ned Stark rode through, whether he believed it or not.
And... Yeah, you know what; let's just disarm the monster and keep him pinned on the floor. Maybe cut his nails while waiting for witnesses, and hand him over to curry favour. Profit.

I'm pretty sure he reflects on (ill-advisedly) wearing it while he killed Aerys; I think it's one of his inner regrets in ASOS. He swapped out his Kingsguard armour for a Lannister set, but kept the cape.
I think so, anyway. Could do with a reread.

Speculate about the future, which you don't know about. We know what happened already. Too much coulda, shoulda, woulda is a waste of time, no?
ETA: not to mention if the above were done, you chopped out half the plot lines.

It's not about changing the history of Westeros, it's about seeing how people would react in Jaime's situation.
