You can leave the mysteries unresolved if they are the background for a compelling history that is happening onscreen, but, as you said, the mysteries were everything they had  and the series was all about them; they needed to do something about them, even if it was really bad.

The artistically best thing to do would have been to keep heightening the sense of mystery and then just cancel it, IMO. Of course, the network needed to hype the final season, so that wasn't quite an option.

But your first sentence is exactly my point. The various unanswered questions and unresolved conflicts in ASOIAF work perfectly well as simply scaffolding for compelling stories and characters. I'm even questioning if I want the myth and uncertainty that surrounds things like the ToJ to be dispelled.

I need some kind of redemption for the Starks - Don't care how it happens, as long as some of their enemies get some good, old fashioned payback.

un-Cat to learn that her 4 living children are alive before going away for good.

Arya to save Sanas from LF, and Sansa to actually have something good happen to her.

I need to know what the hell the others are, and who at the end of the day sits on the Iron Throne (and if there is no Iron Throne, or how the kingdoms get divided up.).

Servings of Frey pie to be the main course for the big feast to come when there is peace in the kingdoms.

Little finger to live, goddammit. Why all the hate on him, apart from killing an honorable pussy (Eddard)? Otherwise, everyone should die. Everyone.

Things I  hope to see/learn by the end of the series:
1. Tragedy/betrayal at Summerhall
2. Davos returning to his family
3. Tower of Joy and Lyanna's death
4. Varys's demise
5. Dany's demise
6. Conclusive evidence of Syrio's fate

Oh no, I like him, I just think that him dying would be hilarious.

I think that this story is dividing into 2 sides for the coming war.

it is going to be a repeat of the Andal invasion. The First men vs. the Andals

The "First Men side" will be the Starks, The Others, the COTF, Northmen, wildlings and anyone else who keeps the Old Gods.

vs.

The "Andals side" that will be the Targaryans, the rest of the southern families, dragons, Melissandre, Stanis, all followers of Ry'lor.

Closure for me is that...

-Jon Snow rejects his status as a Targ, and decides to become the Nightking when he learns that the Others are actually allies of the Starks, and he becomes a total badass that kills dragons, Lannisters and all kinds of MFers before he dies in the last book.

-all of the past Stark kings rise from the grave and are total badasses. Ned Stark and Bran The builder kick ass and take names later.

-Dany kills Khal Pono and takes his dothraki army, her dragons and her own army, and conquers all of Westerous except for the North.

-After her successful campaign to conquer the southern kingdoms, she raises the largest army that the world has ever seen

-She takes this army North to fight against Jon Stark, The Nightking, and The King of Winter, and gets massacred.

-after the "North" winst the war and kills all of their enemies, Bran claims the Title of Ruler of the 7 kingdoms, but decides to sit on the throne of Winterfell to rule his new realm.

I'd like a good, clean end with no loose threads dangling or ambiguous fates for the characters.

Also, *crosses fingers* please:
1. Let Cersei and Jamie die together with dignity.
2. Let Tommen,Mycella, Asha Dany, Sansa, Loras and Brienne survive.
3. Let Tyrion, Victorian, Ramsay die.
4. I want to see Stannis pull a Javert-realise that killing  Renly was dishonourable and then commit suicide.
5. Make Petyr fly.
6. Disclose Varys' past and loyalties.
7. Arya should die defending.
8. Abolish slavery in Essos-we've spent too much time there to just let things slip back to pre-Dany days.

ASOIAF is the tale of the last years of the Continent called Westeros... which was destroyed by a MASSIVE cataclysm of Ice and Fire...

ASOIAF is a collection of notes, songs, tales spread mouth to mouth of the key characters who can be blamed for this dramatic cataclysm.

Old Refugees sang these tales, yet their descendants sang these tales .... May We sang these tales years to come...

Renly is revealed to have never died and Varys has hidden him away to wait for the opportune moment. Renly sits the Iron Throne and destroys all the pretenders and The Others.

Would be ironic because the realm would be fine if Renley weren't such an idiot.(Stannis would have destroyed lannisters)

Either that or Dany has to win the game of thrones hard. I can't imagine Martin's been having us wander around Essos for what seems like a third of the pages just to get a chance to describe funny cultures.

This thought just popped into my mind and now I really really want it to happen (though I'm not entirely sure if it fits).  I want Sansa to marry on of the Blackwood boys and take overlordship of the Riverlands.

1. I'm thinking that Jaime and Cersei will end up killing eachother, hating eachother but probably still crying as they did it.

2. Of those characters I'm only betting on Sansa surviving. Tommen and Myrcella are gonners as per the valonquar prophecy, Loras could go either way but I doubt he'll be getting any plot armour, Brienne I can see dying to save Jaime, Asha to save Theon and I think Dany will die fighting the Others. Sansa though I think will be Queen in the North by the end.

3. Victarion and Ramsay will almost definitely die, but I can see Tyrion being one of the few that makes it. But all bets are off in DOS.

4. Not really seeing this.

5. Am seeing this :)

6. I don't think we'll ever know everything about Varys, but some major details yeah I agree.

7. I think Arya will die, but I'm not sure how.

8. I think slavery won't be completely abolished but it will be in western Essos. In the battle of fire Meereen will I think be reduced to a shell, and once Dany and co. leaves Yunkai will rise again as the single main slaving city rather than sharing with Meereen and Astapor, making it very powerful in the far east. But at the same time I can see Braavos extended it's power to help Dany in her anti-slavery campaign, and probably a series of slave revolts in the southern free cities, so no slavery west of slavers bay.

I think I read this in another thread, but it was a great post.  Anyways, it goes like this;

Jon and Dany are in front of the haunted forest, holding hands.  Jon holds Longclaw ready while Daenerys had her dragons ready to attack; they are both ready for the Great Other to emerge for a final, epic battle.  Suddenly, GRRM comes walking out of the forest, revealing that he is the Great Other and thanking us for reading his books.

Closure for me could be as small as knowing the fates of Arya, Tyrion and Jamie. But I'd also like the Freys to f***ing die.
