I was rather perplexed to see a meek Melisandre on screen.  In reading I had imagined someone more Amazonian in spirit and in features.  Her glowing jewel was rather dark and dull as well.  The costume, I felt, overshadowed and swallowed the actor and made her seem, well, diminutive which in turns makes for a comical Melisandre.  It does seem Martin, in the latest book, is showing more of Melisandre's foolishness but in the beginning she read more mythical-fairy-like.

Your thoughts?

Thought she was close to perfect to be honest. Beautiful but with a wise expression, yet also alien in manner.

She does the mystical, and not to be screwed with bit well, but I don't really get an impression of the sensual siren that I had the image of for her character. Still She's doing well enough so I'm happy.

So far, Melisandre's casting is one of my favourites in the new season. I never got 'Amazonian' from her; she always seemed to me as beautiful, elegant and mysterious.

The stone, however; yea, that stone might need a better actor. :V

I agree, van Houton's portrayal rings very true of the Melisandre of 'A Dance With Dragons'.  She does an excellent job of capturing Melisandre's conviction and belief.  I am looking forward to seeing how she copes with the rest of the role!

This actress is much hotter than I envisioned her. Don't know why, but despite all the mystery around her, she(the book Melisandre) never struck me like that really interesting mysterious character in the books as she was supposed to(I think this might be because I'm one of those few dispicable people who don't really enjoy the magical prophecy zombie side of the story that much). Carice van Houten may still change that though.

Not quite what I imagined she'd be like, but in a good way, I think.

I actually like that she's a little more mature and subtle.  It gives her a better air of mystery.  And she has very expressive eyes.  I've never seen Carice before this, but I'm sold.

I admit I had a slight sinking feeling in her very first scene.  But every scene thereafter I really enjoyed.  I know I have expressed dismay over Asha being portrayed more understated.  But in this instance, it works.  Perhaps Yara will win me over eventually.

Everyone knows George Martin based Asshai on the Netherlands ;). Me being Dutch, I was a bit concerned about her English accent also because it never sounded really natural. However, it doesn't disturb me in the TV-show, it fits the character being mysterious and foreign and all. Love the casting.

I did not know that.  Looking at the world map and trying to place kingdoms and realms in the real world, I would have thought at least Russia (if we are going to keep with the "white" theme).

Great casting. She's pretty much exactly how I pictured her while reading the books.

I thought she would be paler, where bright red that gives off an aura, and have bigger cleavage. But I still liked her

I agree cancerman. Her accent did it for me. But at least it is something to laugh at when she says "Terrors."

I'm really not a fan.  I really like Melisandre in the books, but basically hate show Mel.  And that outfit they gave her in the Stannis seduction scene looked like something from the 70's, also her choker looks like they got it from party city.  Sure she's hot but imo she was miscast.

I did not catch that, I was too distracted by everything else.  I'll have to re-watch that.

Haha, Party City ... the whole look they gave her looks like it was a rented Halloween costume.  If you're from the SoCal region and commute to L.A., you know the store I'm talking about as drive up/down the 5.

Well, she does have a difficult role.  Like I said before with Jaqen, when you play these crazy roles and have to try to use foreign accents that don't exist, it's not easy.  Especially with Meli, she is constantly worshipping and chanting and if not done right, she'll look like a goofball.  So far I think she's doing decent.  I think she looks the part pretty much. We'll see.
