If you had your choice between the HBO series as it exists today OR a word for word adapted animated series that showed all of the battles, castles, and locations, which would you choose, and why?

Live action over anything animated. No matter the quality of the animation I have a hard time feeling anything for drawn characters. Never been interested in or read comics either which might explain my preference.

Live action. Animation has numerous advantages to be sure, but I'm too in love with these actors.

Having read the books, I'd always prefer the luve action adaptation.  I'd probably like an animated spin off, like the rise of the Targs or the R+L story.

Animation has it's place, Pixar has proved it could recapture some of the old Disney magic , in a different way.

Remember Ralph Bakshi tried (well not word for word)a roto-scoped Fellowship of the Ring and it went right into the  commode.

And the semi CGI video game version of 300 made me throw up on my shoes.
(But then Frank Miller is in part responsible for trashing the Battle of Thermopylae, but that's another story.)

Anyway after the first two hours of mostly talk this show would be canceled for zero ratings.

Animation without a doubt!
I'm a purist when it comes to adapting books to films. This series is great but live action has its limits and they are becoming more and more obvious.

Do you mean cartoons or CGI?

Got to go with live action.  I like watching the actors and the scenery.

I usually prefer live-action, but Avatar proofs that a cartoon be better than most of the live-action shows.

Quality 2-D animation for me, hands down. With every scene like something out of a medieval tapestry (ala The Last Unicorn, only less anime, more 'realism'). Would be my dream.

No! Live action drama outstrips animation every time.

I suppose it would mean: all the characters looking exactly as in the book (no need to compromise because no appropriate actors were found) complete with accurate clothing and armour; all locations as described in the books; all creatures from the books; all battle scenes as big and detailed as in the books (no need to worry about special effects budget)
And of course, keeping the dialogue, plotlines and all other small details from the books.

Live action for sure. For one: the word for word thing is impossible anyway. Let's take the targ purple eyes example. How purple should it be? A lighter or darker tone? It's just an example. For all the things grrm describes there are a gazillion things he doesn't describe. There will always be a difference in interpretation. That's the beauty of imagination.
Secondly, and this will sound blasphemous to some, the books also have many flaws. Dany's arc really is stale and no matter how you visualize it, it'll turn out boring. I actually like the dragon theft addition for this very reason. Good things can come from the live action deviations.

Totally true. Nobody stealing the dragons would have been against any common sense to begin with.
It is generally a major problem with fantasy books, that characters do not really act and rather follow the plot.
If the story is about betrayel and intrigue, it can be really annoying.

Perhaps... I won't debate that right now.
But animation would definitely help with all the "visual" elements, such as costumes, creatures, landscapes, locations, battles and other big crowd scenes.
It would all be easier/cheaper to do.

An animated adaptation could have changes or additions too, but it would allso have the option to stick to the book anytime it needs to stick to the book.
