If the Others could find a way to build ships, which shouldn't be too hard if they have a certain degree of intelligence, couldn't they just pack the boats full of wights and land their armies south of the Wall, completely bypassing the magics in the Wall? Or does the magic keeping them back stretch over the sea as well?

I don't know about that. But I think that if there was a maritime solution for the Others, they'd've exploited it by now.

Or can't they walk around once the water is frozen?

I have to say that I won't accept the Others getting through without at least part of the Wall falling.

Salt water doesn't freeze.

Anyway, the magic of the wall probably prevents the White Walkers from going around it. And wights are too stupid to captain a ship. Besides, Eastwatch has a navy anyway.

Eastwatch defends the sea.  I doubt it could handle a large navy, but the Others constructing a fleet of ships doesn't really sound right.

What about the Bridge of Skulls and the gorge, is it possible to bypass the wall to the west, I guess the Others could ride on icebergs if they start forming.

I never mentioned wights captaining ships. The Others could command whilst the wights row. And Eastwatch has a weak navy as I remember.

I know it doesn't sound/probably isn't possible, but I'm struggling to think of a way in which the Others will break down the Wall. I tried to think outside the box and thought of this.

Most of Eastwatch's ships have already been smashed up by storms going to rescue the wildlings from Hardhome though. The Watch's naval potential is now pretty much zero.

Well, shit happens. Doesn't change that Eastwatch is intended to block any ships entering or leaving the Beyond-the-Wall*. But I'm not as sure if wooden ships can cope with the extreme cold that accompanies the Others themselves. They may splinter to easily. The dead things in the water are more intriguing.

* Is there a better/shorter name? North is already reserved

I do not think the Others are smart enough to build a ship. Or better, their way of thinking are to different from human way of thinking that they would not get an idea of a ship.

This is from a SSM...

2. Is it possible to circumvent the Wall to the West with an army?

No, the mountains and a deep river gorge make the terrain impassable for all but small groups of raiders.

Over the Gorge? Why not just slaughter their way over the Bridge of Skulls - the Night's Watch couldn't not really withstand a strong attack of wights with it's force spread so thin.

Yes! The dead things in the water could be wights... Wights aren't alive, so theoretically, couldn't they simply walk along the seabed and walk out onto the beaches of the North and assault the Wall from the south?

And you could just abbreviate it to tLBtW (the Land Beyond the Wall).

I actually meant to build a ramp over the wall like Jon felt Mance could do if given time.

Passing OVER the Wall is not an option for the Others, the magic in the Wall itself would stop them.

The Others, after crossing by sea:

"Well that was ... incredibly easy."

"Why didn't we ever think of this before?"
