For those who’ve always wondered a bit what the series might have looked like at various stages during conceptualization of the people and places, Kimberley Pope—a concept artist who’s worked on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Agora, Elizabeth: the Golden Age, and of course Game of Thrones—has shared a number of examples of concept art, both for this season and last. There’s some spoilers in the season 2 material, rather mild… but there’s also a lot of amazing material, including various iterations of the Dragonstone and Harrenhal designs, good looks at the Eyrie with a kind of cable car (instead of a winch cage), and more.Very much worth a gander.

I'm happy to see some green fiery-looking stuff in one of the shots, I was afraid they weren't going to use it.  I know there is the clip of Tyrion with a jar of wildfire, but so far I hadn't seen any of the stuff actually burning green.  Probably they just wanted to save that reveal for greater impact.

I think they probably wanted to save the green fire for when the episode actually airs. I can't see them not doing it, considering how iconic it is to the scene.

Yeah, I don't understand why they changed Dragonstone. I mean, they only showed 1,2 shots of it anyway.... it was cool to see some dragons. Maybe it was tough to build it in the intro?? Anyway, I'm disappointed.

That's really some amazing concept art on par with that done for LOTR. My favourites are Harrenhal and Qarth. Hopefully some of those fantastic interiors made it into the series. Would love to see it in the coming episodes.

Amazing stuff.

Besides Dragonstone, I think it's a pitty they didn't use the version of the Eyrie connected with the cable. It's much better that the (IMO) too unrealistic version that was used at the end.

In the "Various Location" page for season 2, are one of the drawings supposed to be High Hill in the Riverlands? What do you guys think that location is?Edited to add: The image I'm talking about is the 4th image down the list.

It does kind of look like High Heart, but there are no weirwood stumps.

Where are the Lannister soldiers coming from?  Is that supposed to be Harrenhal?  Why wouldn't it be grouped there on her website then?  Maybe it's Casterly Rock?

Anyone else scratching their heads over how that boat/battering ram thing is suppose to work?

^When they disembark the boat, they flip it over to protect them from arrow fire. Ramming a gate is vulnerable business.

I'd venture Oldstones (although as High Heart it doesn't appear in the books until ASOS)

Oldstones doesn't appear until ASOS either, and has hardly any role.  Maybe it's just a generic set for one of Robb's scenes, like when he's at some random castle.

In the 'Various Locations' section, who are all those soldiers marching out of what looks to be the mouth of a cave?

Yeah, I asked about that upthread a bit.  They seem to be Lannister soldiers, but I can't figure out what cave they would be coming from.  My guess is Harrenhal, but it could be Casterly Rock.  Maybe they'll show a bit of Robb's attack on Ser Stafford's army at Lannisport/CR?

I get the idea behind it.  But the actual design looks about as ridiculous as having a soup ladle with a a toilet plunger attached to the other end.  Look at how top-heavy it is sitting in the water!  And the way the battering ram part is attached - high up in the boat - it would be dragging on the ground as soon as you flipped it over!  Plus, no wheels!
