Ah, but he was only 1-5, so his average continued its decline.  I've always liked Pujols, so I don't know why, but I am taking some sick kind of pleasure in just how terrible he's been.  I'll be happy if he starts raking, he's by all accounts a classy guy and a good representative of the game of the game. I guess I just like him being one extreme or the other.

Nothing wrong with that. Everyone likes a good story, and this one's right up there. I have nothing against the guy either, but I'm kinda a fan of this. Just like I'd be a fan if there was a team on a record-breaking losing streak. On the flip side I've never rooted for Dan Uggla a day in my life, but I was still pulling for him during his hitting streak. I just like seeing players do unexpected things, whether good or bad. (Except for the Red Sox, where the bad unexpected is just depressing)

As a Cards fan, I held no bitterness to Pujols for taking the Angels offer.  St Louis got 11 years of the best player of his time at basically bargain basement salary.  So my attitude was Thanks for the memories and Good Luck, Albert.

I want him to succeed in Anaheim, but his start to the season has been morbidly fascinating.  When he does find his swing, it would be fun to see him go on a tear of hitting 10 to 15 homers a month just to show that he's still got it.

Pujols may have been/be? our last best chance for some time to put the Barry Bonds "asterix" nonsense behind us. Vlad fell apart. A-Rod... pffft! No one else will get close in my lifetime, I'm afraid.

Just playing with numbers, if he gets on track for his average for the next two years, then drops off by 10% for 6 years he still comes in around 715 or so.  He'd need to keep up his average of 44 until he was 36 and then start a decline if he played til he was 40.  Can he do it - yeah, especially if he transitions to DH at some point and reduces the wear and tear.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel.  Although I'll add that while I get no pleasure from seeing him struggle like this, I do take a bit of comfort in feeling even more certain that we were wise to let him go.  There was no way that St. Louis could have given him a deal that made sense unless perhaps he'd agree to that 5 year one that we'd dangled out there.

So apparently Lance Lynn is the best pitcher in baseball?

It's May 3rd.  Ask this question again on September 3rd.

Yeah I feel the same way. We won two world series with him so thanks for the memories and congrats on making that bank. Beltran has stepped up his game and the Cards offense is acting like pujols who? Matheny was a risky choice, given his lack of experience, and I have my fingers crossed for him. He seems to have the knowledge of the game and the respect of the players. So far so good.

Ahh, the "Who can unseat Bonds?" game. A favorite for me as well.

A-Rod is 36 and has 633 homers, but working against him is that he only got 16 last year (in 99 games) and he's douchey so nobody really wants him to unseat Bonds anyway. He is on pace for 25 homers this year, which he could conceivably maintain for a few years more, if he stayed healthy. That might get him above Ruth but not Aaron.

Pujols is interesting, at 445 at age 32. How can we make predictions when he's gone 0-for-Anaheim on homers, though? I dunno. The odds are against any player. Bonds was a freak to begin with and the cream and the clear made him something unreal.

Farther down the list we have someone like Miguel Cabrera (284, age 29), who only needs to average 37 homers a year for the next 13 years to get up there. Sheesh.

The Rays have the best record in baseball? Didn't see that one coming a month ago. Maddon . Longo's injury will hurt though.

Re: Pujols: I think he'll emerge from this slump fairly soon, but 130 ABs is an incredibly long stretch for him to go without a HR. And it's unfortunate for the Angels that it has coincided with his move. Maybe a series against the Jays will help (he's .472 lifetime against Toronto...)

Facking Giants are killing me. Swept at home by the Phish and they lose Sandoval for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. It's gonna be a long season.

Mariano Rivera tears ACL

I hope he can bounce back from this, it's a terrible thing to happen at any point, but especially rough if it's the last event in a historic career.  Get better, Mo.  You're a hated Yankee, but even hated Yankees deserve to go out when they choose.

yeah, if the last time we see him playing is shagging flies in BP that is going to be such a disservice to his career.

Only because this thread has become infested with Dodgers fans will I bother to note that the Cubs beat the Dodgers, despite Kerry Wood's best attempts to lose.  They're 7-5 out of their last 12, which looks a lot better than the 3-11 they started the year out.

If only they had a bullpen and the guy they hired to hit home runs could just plain hit the ball, we might one day see .500!

Watching the Phils-Nats game, and the announcers are making a big deal that until tonight Strasburg hadn't given up a HR since Aug. 2010.  He's started what, 10 games since then?  If you're gonna make a big deal about him not giving up a HR since late 2010 you might wanna mention that he basically missed the entire 2011 season.  I'm really getting sick of the hype machine around the Nats' kids.  I want to like the Nats, but it's pretty hard to do that when half of every SportsCenter is dedicated to what Bryce Harper almost did.

In other news: The new era of Dodger baseball has begun!  In a stunning move new ownership went out and signed...... Bobby Abreu?
