I feel you, but I do think there's a difference between saying something tarnished or got an asterisk, and saying something's false, fake, etc.

I mean, we do the * thing with Barry Bonds, McGwire, etc., right? That's not considered controversial or anything, right? Roger Clemens used to be talked about as maybe the best pitcher of his generation, now it's debatable if he even gets in the Hall.

I think it's ok to contextualize stuff and, more, if we want people to stop doing this stuff, we HAVE to contextualize it. It's not fair to the guys who get carried down and weren't involved, but that's life.

The whole 'everyone's doing it, ___ only got caught' thing has been around for ever. Should Ben Johnson get his gold medal back?

But those are all purely individual, purely statistical achievements.   It's different when you're talking about wins and losses in a team sport.  To me, this is more akin to stealing signs in baseball, which I don't think anyone thinks would taint a championship, though it would be fun to argue about it.

I'm not sure what to think of a non-lineman NFL player with a double chin...

Stay classy, Jay.

Paparazzi stalking him and his pregnant fiance as they go about their business?  They deserve more than a middle finger.

That has to be the loosest use of the word "stalking" ever.

Looser than this:

That's the second time you've quoted me today.  Stop stalking me, Rock!

Report I heard this morning said he might only miss half the season if it is only a partial tear and even with that they might be looking at the Giants to deal Osi as a replacement.

I'm skeptical. He won't be able to work out his leg for months; he's bound to lose a tremendous amount of muscle mass. Even if he's walking again by the fall, he won't be in playing shape.

So I caught up with Eli's SNL appearance yesterday on Hulu. I thought it was a perfect microcosm of his whole career: really good at times, not so good at other times, awkward throughout, 100% goofy and yet still surprisingly winning. Also still about half as good as his brother's performance.

I really hope that Eli does the "drop the sandwich" touchdown dance this season.  That would be awesome.

Except for the part about being 'surprisingly winning', I think that's a pretty good microcosm of SNL, too.

Well, I guess we're finally starting to clear some hurdles with this Vikings stadium debacle. I heard on the radio they've now reached a preliminary agreement with the U of M to use TCF Bank Stadium during the construction. It sounds like the U is really cashing in. Maybe with the extra funding, the Gophers will be able to start recruiting high school players!

What? They do that already?

Huh... had me fooled.

Yep, approximately $3 million a year for up to four years.  So, the U of M will stand to make somewhere around $9 - $12 million on this deal (unless they can build the new stadium in under three years).  Also, something I'm curious about is how they're gonna handle alcohol for the Vikes games?  It's my understanding that the U of M is a dry campus.

Oh well, I'm just glad they're getting this done.  I think it would have been a travesty if the Vikings had left Minnesota.

Apparently the USFL is coming back in 2013, or at least they are trying to.

A couple key things:

-They are going to play in the Spring so that they will not be competing w/ the NFL

-Their goal appears to be more of a developmental league; not direct competition

-The only city that they are definitely going to be in at this point is Los Angeles

-They want to be in medium-sized cities and have players from colleges in those regions, so you could have a San Antonio, Austin, or OKC team that would have a lot of Big 12 players, or you could have a Portland team that Oregon or Oregon State players were playing on.

This is great news if you're a college football player trying to make the pros.  It would represent a lot more jobs if you're on the proverbial bubble.

Would you guys watch this?

I watched the original USFL, I do not remeber a lot about it, but it was fun.

I think they would be smart to stay in spring and use it as a developmental league than a competition to the NFL. ESPN's 30 for 30, had a program on the USFL, their bigest mistake was trying to take on the NFL head to head.

Yeah, my understanding at this point is that they're very much not trying to do that this time.  They want to fill the void, so to speak, for a football-crazed America after the NFL season ends.

The notion of trying to get more local college stars on the teams is another interesting idea too.  For example, let's say Portland was one of the teams.  What if Darron Thomas was their QB for a few years?  I don't think that would hurt ratings.

Or if there was a team in San Antonio and their QB was a Longhorn or Aggie who was on the border for making the NFL?

The NFL itself would probably love this if it really was just more of a d-league and not competition.

Interesting, Trisk!  I'd give it a shot.  I mean, D-league basketball does ok I guess.  My local D-league team has a pretty good following as far as I know (I'm not much for basketball) and has players "called up" somewhat frequently.  So I think the quality of play is decent.

Hell, I watched the XFL with all its shitfest glory, I'd watch this too if it was entertaining.  I've gone to Arena Football games as well.  Those are kind of cool.
