Happy May Day, everyone!

I'm still struggling to find a good book to capture my interest. Half-heartedly reading Mansfield Park and bits of a science anthology I've had lying around for year.

I am on  the homestretch of The Heretic Kings by Kearney.  So I will probably be picking up the second omnibus of Monarchies of God for Kindle later today.

Reading Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis.  Good stuff!  Glad I finally got a copy and am already looking forward to the next book.  Glad the publisher stuff got straightened out.

I'm almost done with Michael Crummy's Galore. It took me a while to get into it, but now I'm really enjoying it. It reminds me a bit of David MItchell's style. I've got The Snow Child t read next.

About halfway through Horns by Joe Hill, a devilishly engaging murder-mystery.

Highly recommended.

Started the first of the Shira Calpurnia trilogy by Matthew Farrer, Crossfire. Tried to start it years ago and found it very hard going, now i'm enjoying it quite a lot.

Also I intend to read the Imriel trilogy this month, the second part of the Kushiel's Dart series.

I'm not sure that I would bother if I were you.

I just finished the first three books of the Nightrunner series (by Flewelling). I think that's enough bad prose for me, for awhile at least. I'm now trying again on The Yiddish Policeman's Union, which I started several months ago but just wasn't in the mood for at that time. There's a lot going on in Chabon's prose, for sure -- it takes some careful listening. And in the audio version, the narrator reads with a very strong "Jewish" style -- maybe New York Jew? I dunno, but it's very noticeable -- which I'm not sure I'll enjoy for a whole book's worth. We Shall See.

I ordered this the other day and will start it as soon as it gets to me. I haven't read anything from him since I read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Stumbling through Dragon's Path currently. I feel like I'm missing something... For some reason I don't get the feeling that this world is old and creaking with a rich backstory. I like the language and the characterization is decent, but somehow it hasn't quite clicked yet.
I feel tempted to buy Dervish House but I'm also not sure if I will like that better than Dragon's Path. *sigh*

Halfway through Tales of Horror and the Supernatural by Arthur Machen. A bit underwhelmed so far, especially by The White People which has been hyped by people like HP Lovecraft. I thought it was pretty boring, and the fact that it is written as a fictional diary by a young girl who apparently wasn't much of a fictional writer doesn't help. The other stories are mostly young men walking the streets of London and seeing unspeakable horrors in top floor windows (where unspeakable, just like in Lovecraft stories, literally means that the author doesn't even try to describe it further). There are some glints of quality though. It's worth reading, at least.

Once I finish my final book for my history course I am going to finish The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, which is very good so far.

After that, I plan on reading The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, based on recommendations from this board!

I did a bunch of reading in April, including finishing Difference Engine by Gibson/Sterling, Sanderson's Alloy of Law, Hamilton's Void trilogy, and a passel of non-fiction. Difference Engine I didn't particularly care for, Alloy of Law was reasonably entertaining fluff, and Void trilogy delivered what I expected though ultimately I didn't enjoy it as much as Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained. The non-fiction reading included a couple highlights, Haidt's Righteous Mind and Schneier's Liars and Outliers.

I do a fair amount of relatively high-intensity writing in May and June, so I don't tend to read as much volume-wise in those months. On the slate are Cline's Ready Player One and hopefully also War and Peace (P&V translation) finally. If I do that, I also plan to read Lieven's Napoleon Against Russia immediately before or after or in conjunction with it.

Then it's Firethorn, then who knows.

I just finished Jhereg. Didn't even mention that I was reading it in my earlier post, but there ya go -- quick read. It was great to read it again -- I first read it in the 80s, when it was newly published. Brust does a good job of building world details very quickly, and keeping the plot zipping right along. A fun read.

Will be working on the Chabon book this afternoon and evening.

Bring Up the Bodies is coming out in nine days! I'll be reading that. Right now I'm pursuing the Shardlake mysteries by C.J. Sansom-they make for easy reading and are ideal for exam time.

Anyone else psyched for Daniel Abraham's The King's Blood?

Just checked my Kindle in the hope that Amazon delivered it a day early, but no such luck.

Ah well, only 24 hours to go.
