I finished Gears of the City by Felix Gilman on Friday and it's my favorite book of the year thus far.  It was just an amazing book, and as much as I loved The Half-Made World this is now my favorite book by Gilman.  It has great characters, an absolutely amazingly detailed atmosphere, very interesting plot, and the ending was just perfect.  I preferred it quite a bit to the first half of the duology, Thunderer, because the plot threads and POVs wove together much more tightly.  I doubt I'll read a more enjoyable book this year, but I'll count myself very, very lucky if I do.

I'm now 1/3 through Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London and it's a great read so far.  I loved Peter's first meeting with Nightingale, and I still chuckle when I think about it.

I'll be reading
The millennium trilogy
The scar and perdido street station
The book of the new sun
For whom the bell tolls
The long price quartet volumes 2-4
Black sun rising
The sarantine mosaic
The fionavar tapestry

Hell of a list. You read faster than I do if your killing that in a month, New Sun is a hell of an endeavor.

Anyone else psyched for Daniel Abraham's The King's Blood?

Just checked my Kindle in the hope that Amazon delivered it a day early, but no such luck.

Ah well, only 24 hours to go.
Glad you reminded me.  Better still, library has no one on the hold cue. Weld County, Colorado, you have horrible taste in books.

Glad to hear it, I will move it up my list and maybe get to it this year.

I'm currently halfway through Mercedes Lackey's Mage Winds trilogy.  It is definitely the weakest Valdemar trilogy I've read so far. Heralds of Valdemar and Last Herald Mage are the other 2 trilogies I've read.

After Valdemar, I have The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon and I also want to continue my Wheel of Time re-read (currently at Fires of Heaven).

Holy shit!  Actually reading something by an author that had to make up her/his own world and populate it?  Little off the beaten path for you, isn't it?  I want to encourage you because i think most of the shit you read is fucking horrid, but this isn't much better.

On a lighter note.  I'm finishing up Cain's Law and loving the shit out of it.  I'm going to go back and re read from Heroes die.  Please, people, go out and buy these books, so Stover's talent isn't wasted on writing fucking EU garbage, as a means for him to pay to bills.

Make them re-release them or fix my eyes so e-readers don't give me migraines and I will.

What does EU mean in this context? I'm guessing "Existing Universe", since he has written a bunch of Star Wars novels.

That's about top speed, but I might not be able to get the last couple books from the store in time. I'll be happy if I finish 12-14 of them.

Bite me. Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Dan Abnett write circles around George R.R Martin and Steven Erikson, 40k is infinitely superior to Lord of the Ring and Star Wars and Malazan, and I have the right to read what the hell I choose, not what someone titled the biggest douchebag in westeros deems to be good.

And I read plenty of fiction outside the Black Library, 40k and Warhammer make up the majority of my collection but not all of it. Some series I have read include,

Honor Harrington
A Song of Ice and Fire
Vampire Hunter D
Sword of Truth
The Dresden Files
Skulduggery Pleasant

And a few others. So shove your encouragement.

I'm currently reading John Dies At The End by David Wong, which is probably what you could expect to write after a long night of extremely bad acid reflux following a combined Supernatural/X-Files marathon, with too much barbeque and beer.

It's fun though.

Made me laugh because im reading Caines Law and some 40k. :)The Yiddish Policemans Union by Chabon got to me today so im starting that, meaning that I now have 5 books that im reading. Way too much for me, probably going to settle on Chabon for now. Also, i finished When We Were Executioners by JM McDermott. If you liked the first one, buy it. If you haven't read the first one, what the hell are you waiting for? I'm not sure if it still is, but i saw it for free on the kindle a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: nope Never Knew Another is not free anymore. The Last Dragon ( his first book? ) is $4.99 though.

For nostalgia's sake, and due to the fact that it was his last book before his death. I just picked up The Rogue Crew by Brian Jacques, the final Redwall series novel. I first started reading the series when I was in Kindergarten and I was absolutely obsessed.  Great author, great guy, great books. If you are ever looking for an easy read, or if you have kids looking for novels with great characters and storylines, then check the Redwall series out!

In some ways, it is like  ultra light GRRM novels, with multiple point of view characters, including the villains!

Rest in Peace Brian Jacques, you will forever be an inspiration to me!

Halfway through The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Picking up the The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword tomorrow, finally re-released in Holland. Going to read them after I finish The Da Vinci Code.

EDIT: Can't find a Dunk & Egg Tales sub-forum or topic, anyone could link me?

I'll take Erikson over Abnett and ADB any time of the week, despite them being my two favorite 40k authors. Even if ADB is good at writing he is still writing bolter porn.

First time i've ever heard anyone describe ADB's work as bolter porn. Frankly its the exact opposite, especally if you read the Night Lords trilogy or The Emperor's Gift.

I tried to read the first book of Malazan, I was bored out of my mind by it. I had no idea what was happening, characters were popping up everywhere and it was referencing history that I had no idea about because it hadn't even been explained. I like details, but there is a thing as too much detail.

He writes for Black Library and is a brilliant author, and my favourite author of all.

I said I read it, I never said all of it was good. The first two novels are great (Darken Rahl forever!), third to sixth are good and the seventh and eighth are terrible. Haven't read the last three. And as of book seven the sermons just became too much... I mean I liked the messages of the first two books and the sixth, but come on! When your about to kill a guy who murdered your mother you don't give a speech on how love is about improving both your lives and why you can't understand it, you just kill the bastard!
