Do you immediately start on the next one in your TBR pile or let the one you just finished settle in your mind a bit?

I usually wait a day or so to process what I've just read before starting another book.  In fact, I was annoyed the other day because I finished a book at work and I still had an hour or so of waiting around before I had to do anything. (A job in the theater is a whole lot of "hurry up and wait" at times). I was annoyed because I had another book on my Nook that I wanted to read but I did not want to start right away.

I will add that reading a series is different. I will finish one and start on the next one immediately if I have the next one around.

I don't even finish, half the time.

I've usually got 2-4 on the go at once.

If I finish a book at home, I often have to look at my shelf two or three times to pick what is next.  But If I know I am closing in on finishing a book, I make sure the next one on my pile goes to work with me, hate to not have reading material at lunch.

Well I close the book, put it down and think about the ending and the best parts for a few minutes, then I add it into my book journal. Later on i'll choose my next book and make a small start on it or start it the next day, depends on the time I finish my book and whether or not I can wait to start the next one.

If I have a next book planned, I'll start it as soon as possible. But I can be indecisive, so sometimes I'll spend a day or two just trying to decide what to read next. I'll pick something up, read a few pages, then go to another one. Then back again. Until I just calm down and bite into something properly.

It largely depends on the book. If it's one I really enjoyed I'll usually wait longer before starting a completely new one. Unless I'm reading a series, in which case I'm onto the next one as soon as I'm done with the other.

Exactly! I also find that I need to switch book genres too.

I usually read a few in parallell, (er, say, up to 12-15,) so I tend to move on to something else when I finish, but if something was good i'll go do something else for a bit after i've finished, and I will usually won't start something else for a day or so either, so as not to replace the books in the currently-reading pile on a one to one basis.

If the book is good, it's sticky. I go back to it over and over for a few days.

If the book is bad, I try to jump into something else as quickly as possible to wash out the taste.

I am usually just the opposite -- I like to immediately start a new book when I finish the old one. Perhaps that's because I own so many books that I haven't read yet that I feel I can afford to take any time "off" -- or as the sweatshirt my sister gave me a few years ago says, "So many books, so little time!"

I guess i have no idea what you folk are mulling over for a day before you can read again.  It is a foreign concept to me, i just like to continue reading more good books.

I move on right away and often am reading more than one book at a time anyway.  I reflect on books as I read them.  I like to start something new as quickly as possible because, unfortunately, for too many books the initial discovery phase is better than the completion stage.  After persisting with a book that meandered/bloated/descended into cliche or farce/etc, I'm ready to jump to the fresh promise of a new book.  Also I always have so many new books that I want to read.

I'm probably borderline ADD.  I wish more books maintained their quality throughout.

I don't know if anyone's read the book Tiger's Quest. But that was a god awful book. And I stupidly bought all three from the series. After I forcibly read the first book I found it hard to read a book for at least a couple of weeks. That's when I take a break. From God, awful literature.

I sometimes wait a little bit, maybe a couple of hours, maybe a bit longer. It depends on how good the book was, really. There are some books that really demand you pause and think about what you've just read for a while, let everything sink in. Those are rare and need to be savored. Besides, I don't always know what I'll be reading next, I go through my stacks and pick out a book, then change my mind and pick another.. it's all part of the fun.

All bets are off if I'm trapped someplace with a lot of time to kill, like a plane or a doctor's office. Then I move on to the next one right away.

The worst thing about Goodreads is that unfinished books haunt you. I just finished a book and can think of 20 books I would rather dive into than the three titles I have failed to finish for years. So now I'm lying in my sick bed not reading anything because I feel guilty. Urgh.

Mostly, I'll just jump into the next one, especially a series. Sometimes though, I just cant settle either, like someone said upthread. Then i might just spend a day or so on short stories, which are on my phone.

I usually don't pick up a new book directly after I've finished another (like right after reading the last page). But if I have an available book that I've been itching to read I generally start as soon as possible, all depending on what time it is when I finished the first book.
