When - Saturday May 12th 12:30
Where - Central Park (near the MET)

We are planning (or working on planning). A picnic in Central park during the day  and perhaps a brew or two later in the evening. Coming from Maine I always like touristy things like museums or NYC landmarks if anyone is interested in that too.

Already coming -

Time? Have we decided that yet? Noon-ish?

Our schedules are really messed up right now (lots of hectic things happening all at once), but Mr. X and I should be able to at least stop by and say Hi at some point during the day. :)

Noonish sounds good to me. I don't know the area particularly well so I can't suggest the best place to meet.

May is usually the best/worst time for hectic things to happen.  We had started a discussion group on Facebook, and as I haven't been able to reach the board today that might be easier for some people.

Look me up if on facebook.

Noonish is a little early for me - I have a 2hr drive. But if you guys are all cool with noon I'll make sure to be on time.

I wouldn't mind making a pit stop at the Met. Haven't been there in a while and I miss it.

Any locals want to chime in with locations for the picnic and/or drinks later on?

I'm in. What time and place? Haven't been to the Met in a few months, would love to go.

Tried your fb, no results popped up.

Edit: I'm a local, but not really familiar with the Central Park hood.

There are a few Bandito's

I am up for two meet ups. Early and later on. One suggestion was meeting near the MET for those interested in going there.

How about this. Meet up at Cleopatra's Needle, which is a big-ass obelisk right behind the Met (across the drive). You can't miss it, so it makes an easy rendezvous point. We find someplace close by to sit and have lunch and then whoever wants to visit the Met can go in and whoever wants to chill can chill. Or people can visit the Natural History museum, too, which is a short walk away.

Then later in the afternoon, after the museum people are done, we can meet back up and go elsewhere for snacks, drinks, or other hijinks. Shall we say, meet up at the Needle at around 12, 12:30? Anyone who doesn't know the area can PM me for my cell number. But it's fairly easy to find. Just google Metropolitan Museum of Art and look on the map directly behind the museum (i.e., west of museum) for the obelisk with an octagonal plaza surrounding it. There are plenty of fields and little grassy areas nearby to have a picnic. It's somewhat of a busy part of the park on a spring Saturday, because the Great Lawn is nearby with it's softball fields, but if it's too crowded, we can always walk somewhere else.

I say we do that and play the rest by ear.

Anyone thinking of coming should probably PM Bandito (or me) and get our cell numbers in any case so we can coordinate and/or find each other. I think potluck was discussed at one point. I'm no cook, so if we do that, I'll just bring chips or soda or something. The rest of you can sort out whatever other vittles you want to bring.

eta: This is what Cleopatra's Needle looks like. There's another one in Paris and one in London. Don't go to either of those; we'll never find you.

eta2: For some reason, the map view on googlemaps doesn't show the obelisk. Switch to satellite view and you'll find it in a second.

Sounds good to me. When it comes to planning I trust in Naz's abilities completely.

I probably won't join you all for the Met so if someone wants to chill that's fine or I'll just take a trip back home.

Anyone know if there are any picnic tables near the Met? If so I don't mind going early to grab one. SB has my phone number and I will PM it to Naz as well.

I'll do my best to be at the obelisk by 12:30 with some sort of snacky treats of the dessert variety. Then after a light repast I will head to the Met with anyone else interested in getting their art history on.

Anyone who wants to find me on FB

should feel free to friend away! Or PM me for my cell #

See ya Saturday. \m/

If I remember correctly there are picnic tables in the pine wood between the Grand Resevoir and the Great Lawn so my plan is to just go there and grab a table. I don't like sitting on the ground.

Naz, can you pm me your current cell #? I'll probably not be in the city on Saturday, but on the off chance that I am, I might try and swing by.  Also, let me know if you want to try and hit a Mets game in the next few weeks, I want to try and get to Citi Field, but so far I've not done jack but talk about it.

My cell #'s on my facebook profile. PM's aren't working here, I think. Re: Citifield, yeah, let's do it. My brother still gets $8 tickets occasionally, usually with a 3-4 days' notice. Next time, he gets them, I'll let you know. Or we can go anytime.

Ok - I probably won't make 12:30 (that's exactly when naptime starts) but I'd love to meet up for some part of the afternoon.  I'll PM my number to Bandito.

I will give you my number on Facebook. I could appreciate needing a nap. Hanging out with my nephews in Philly they have tired me out. Look forward to seeing you Saturday.

Not sure how people are feeling but I do like other people to cook my food for me on occasion if they simply want to find a place to eat. I just generally like food. Picnic or otherwise. Whatever works.

I seem to have come down with some weird throat infection thing, so there's a chance I might not make it. I'll see how I feel tomorrow morning, but right now, I feel like crap.

Naz - Booooo! Get better! You have to come! :grouphug:

SB - The beauty of chilling in Central Park is that it is close to plenty of food places on either side. If we all bring some snacks for the picnic we can go get some more substantial food if we want.

I am planning to bring some cheese and crackers type snacks. I will also bring a soccerball and a frisby in case anyone is feeling sporty.

Too bad Naz, I had the same a few days ago! I think for me it was allergies gone bad.

Space Bandito- I'm very sorry I'm not going to be able to make it to the picnic after all, have to work. But can get together later for a drink or two :-D. What time is the later gathering?
