How about this. Meet up at Cleopatra's Needle, which is a big-ass obelisk right behind the Met (across the drive). You can't miss it, so it makes an easy rendezvous point. We find someplace close by to sit and have lunch and then whoever wants to visit the Met can go in and whoever wants to chill can chill. Or people can visit the Natural History museum, too, which is a short walk away.
Then later in the afternoon, after the museum people are done, we can meet back up and go elsewhere for snacks, drinks, or other hijinks. Shall we say, meet up at the Needle at around 12, 12:30? Anyone who doesn't know the area can PM me for my cell number. But it's fairly easy to find. Just google Metropolitan Museum of Art and look on the map directly behind the museum (i.e., west of museum) for the obelisk with an octagonal plaza surrounding it. There are plenty of fields and little grassy areas nearby to have a picnic. It's somewhat of a busy part of the park on a spring Saturday, because the Great Lawn is nearby with it's softball fields, but if it's too crowded, we can always walk somewhere else.
I say we do that and play the rest by ear.
Anyone thinking of coming should probably PM Bandito (or me) and get our cell numbers in any case so we can coordinate and/or find each other. I think potluck was discussed at one point. I'm no cook, so if we do that, I'll just bring chips or soda or something. The rest of you can sort out whatever other vittles you want to bring.
eta:
This is what Cleopatra's Needle looks like. There's another one in Paris and one in London. Don't go to either of those; we'll never find you.
eta2: For some reason, the map view on googlemaps doesn't show the obelisk. Switch to satellite view and you'll find it in a second.
