My theory is (if he is alive) that he takes up a quest to free Sansa and that he somehow joins forces with Brienne...another paradigm of knightly honor who helped spark Jaime's transformation.

yes he does! most possibly because there's some humanity still left in him. But there's a distance between this and "protective"

I don't see how one negates the other. No, he's not tactful or tender with her (Because that's not who he is and because he is trying to get her to see how ugly this world is, the horrors people are capable of) but his instinct has always been to protect her. From Joffrey countless of times, from the mob, from everyone as he offered to take her with him and kill those who try to hurt her. As someone said, he's a complex man and so is this relationship.

He does scare her initially but its pretty clear in their final conversation that is no longer the case. But, to answer your question, he does quite a bit for her.
-Tells her about his burns which starts her on her path to realizing the truth about knights.
-Tells her to give Joffrey what he wants. In my opinion, this is the single most important piece of advice that Sansa receives in the entire series. This saves her from beatings and she uses this to figure out how to behave and act with Joffrey. It also sparks a huge change in how she behaves with others. She even fools Littlefinger later in the series.
- Lies for her at Joff's name day tourney, protecting her from being beaten.
- Saves her from the mob.
- Lies for her again with Blount when she first visits the godswood.
- He also attempts to take her away with him when he leaves KL. As we all know, this doesn't work out very well.

To answer the OT, The Hound is not a Ser. He runs away from knighthood, thusly running away from AGOT. He doesn't have to play their games. He's not looking for honor for his family, or money, or anything. The reason why he does all these things for Sansa is because he's not a bad person. If I had the choice of not beating a girl, or saving her life, etc I would becasue there is no reason not to. However all the knights in shining armor are pieces of shit

so how can you terrify the person who you wanna "protect"? isn't it a bit like what Viserys did to Dany? and he offers to take her with him after sneaking into her room, frightening her, threatening her and trying to kiss her!!!! oh, what a jolly situation

and he doesn't scare her initially. He does it until the last moment he sees her. Yes I agree that he "opens up" a bit. After a drink or two (or should I say bottles????
As QuaitheTheShadow said, it seems to me he's much more protective to Arya instead.
oh and sorry for not elaborating as much as I probably should but I'm trying to reply to multiple posts and new ones are coming in constantly
