Al Queada bomb threat foiled?

That is the link
"
An al Qaeda plot to blow up a US-bound aircraft using an underwear bomb has been foiled, American officials have said.
The plan, around the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden's killing by US forces, involved a sophisticated version of the device that failed to detonate on board a plane heading to Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, they added.
The CIA thwarted the latest plan by al Qaeda's branch in Yemen and the new device has been recovered."
That is a bit of the story.
I am sorry but I find myself thinking "We are supposed to beleive this?" because there is definitely something that smells rotten here.We are supposed to beleive that an organisation that according to some credible sources is almost dead has done this.
Or how about the fact that an organisation that is smart enough to make a bomb like this is too dumb to pick viable targets?
Someone somewhere is speaking a massive amount of BS and personally I think their name starts with C and ands in A.

My point was more toward the need to announce the action to the public. It's propaganda to keep the people scared, although this doesn't appear to be one of the "fake" plots depending on criminal informers that basically provide the plot, money and weapons, like the ones the FBI is so fond of.

You have to be kidding, the comment is that it does not add up and you jump to their defence? Stupid people do not make undetectable bombs that requires smart people. Smart people do not target high security areas they go for soft targets with minimal defences. Those simple facts make it clear the world is being fed a line. Unfortunately it would appear that the majority of the worlds population is willing to beleive the lie.

When the CIA/FBI catches the bomber before the bomb goes off everyone on the internet says "These fascists are just setting up this idiot with a homemade bomb!"
Since they are damned if they do, and damned if they don't, they might as well go for maximum drama and at least get a movie deal out of it. And on the plus side, no internet cynics can say that the terrorist didn't really aim to set off the bomb if they arrest him at the very last minute while he is attempting to light his pants.
Of course some people on the flight might complain about their lives being put in danger to appease internet chatterers, but those people are pussies.

People are within their rights to be skeptical as to whether that's the most effective use of resources in this global war on terrorism of ours.
But by the same token AQAP do have this thing about PETN devices and bringing down planes and the vast alphabet of US intelligence agencies are all over that angle, so this isn't really comparable to those FBI cases.
I'm not sure what the point of getting cathartic about this is, intelligence agencies do like to trumpet cases like the above, there are real threats to US security from groups like AQAP, I don't see why it has to be one or the other.

My objection is to being expected to beleive the situation as it has been presented to us. I mean when something just doesn't add up it normally means that there is a big steaming pile of BS involved.

You need not be a chemist or physicist to see how easy it would be to attack the west at it's weak points especially for murderous scumbags with no morality so why are "they" constantly going for well defended targets?

The whole thing is designed to keep people scared.

I dunno. If I were a terrorist I'd bomb a mall or a cinema, to spread maximum terror. But they seem to be genuinely obsessed with airplanes. I get the feeling that they aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the drawer.

ETA: Brienne that is my point they are not that stupid even allowing for manipulation of dumb people those "in charge" would be picking soft targets not fixating on planes. Thus something seriously does not add up and I may not know what or where or even who but most of us can take a good guess at why.

Have you had the pleasure of going through the whole body scan? Crikey, it sucks. You put your hands on this wall and they scan you, with your hands spread out and your legs spread. After seeing some of the images this machinery produces, it is a pretty humiliating experience. One time I went through this, I asked the TSA agent if he could tell me if my prostate was enlarged. He didn't even crack a smile. I was hoping at least a small amount of self-hating humor would make the experience better but I was wrong.
I'm no expert at explosives but could you stuff enough explosive material next to your penis that could bring down a plane? I'm not so sure. Based on my penis (may not be an accurate representation of the average male) I have my doubts. So even if the brilliant operatives in the Yemani al-queda did figure out a way to make explosive tighty-whiteys, does it really present a threat that could bring down an Airbus? Yeah, if this is the best the CIA can bring to the table, we could be doing this very wrong.

They do this in order to trap people who want to build a bomb and are trying to get the means. They need actual evidence to prove the wannabe terrorists actually intended to set off a bomb and were not just boasting. So they give them a fake bomb and see if they really try to use it. Would you rather they just arrested people who bragged about being terrorists?
Remember, terrorists actually do exist and actually do want to kill people. 9/11 was not a Hollywood movie. It's not just the MAN trying to get us all.
