[Book Spoilers] Nitpick without repercussion!

It's getting harder to do this now with the show deviating so much from the books, but there are still plenty of things to nitpick at. I'll start. I didn't like Cersei's "the price we pay for our sins" speech and inferring that her and Jaime's incest made Joffrey mad like some of the Targaryens. For one, Cersei never talks about her and Jaime having sex to anyone (that I recall?), especially Tyrion, and second, the price we pay for our sins....that doesn't sound right to me coming from her. We need more evil Cersei. Yes, I know she becomes super unhinged after Joffrey died, but she was never a saint by any means was always scheming and devious. Even LF referred to her thinking she was a "player" in the ASOS. She seems too pious in the show.

I'm still trying to decide whether or not I believe Jaime would actually kill a Lannister kid that idolizes him.

And oh. Shae is sooooo scary.

Oh, yeah, and there are a couple rules to this thread, because it's been warned by moderators before. Namely, don't make skeevy or perverted remarks about actresses' faces, breasts, sex scenes, etc. (coughYARA!)

And for the good of the thread, it's supposed to be nitpicking without repercussion. So basically, you can vent about anything you want without worrying about the retaliation of being called too picky or a purist. Feel free to debate the accuracy of a nitpick, but don't get mad at someone for going too overboard. That's what makes the thread fun.

Not to keep harping on the same point, but Jaime's actions were completely out-of-character, at least if you're going by the books. Book Jaime was ruthless, but I could never see him killing a fellow Lannister soldier and prisoner who idolized him. It's just too much.

That said, it was a marvelous scene in its own right. I just can't ever see this version of Jaime wanting or finding redemption.

Not only did Cersei admit to Tyrion about her and Jamie but Jamie admitted it to Catelyn and Brienne! Beforehand (episode 1 or 2?) we had Jamie refuting the claims to Robb as being gossip from fishwives. Now all of a sudden he's admitting it in the presence of a complete stranger. I'm sure it doesn't make much difference with Cat and Brienne knowing but it's an inconsistency in his character.

I can maybe understand Tyrion at a push but Cersei was always angered by his joking accusations of their incest. For her to openly confide in him like that seemed wrong. And that's another thing, there doesn't seem to be as much distrust and scheming going on between Tyrion and Cersei as there was in the book. They've had their moments by all means but they're being balanced out by these touching scenes where she confides in him about Joffrey. I think they're great scenes but I don't think it sets the scene well for events later in the series. Not tragic but it's something I'm not keen on. I much preferred the hateful relationship than this one.

Xaro and Pyat Pree pulling of a coup and changing the social infrastructure of Qarth? Again it doesn't have a huge impact on events overall but why was it needed? I'm a little confused about Xaro's role in all that and will need to watch it again. Did he know about the dragon theft? Why bother lying about it so sincerely when moments later he flips it around?

Jamie killing Alton was of course a bit of a shitty one. Out of character and didn't need to happen.

Some have been said already, but they bother me still.

Bran and company not hiding in the crypts, although I have a feeling that somehow they backtracked and went hiding there after all. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Xaro and Pyat in league to rule Qarth? WTF?

Cersei and Tyrion are friends now?

And of course the biggest one of them all, although it's not strictly about this episode: the Reeds...

And what was the deal with the BFF-moment that Tyrion and Cersei shared. They both agree that Joffrey is the combination of Aerys II and Maegor the Cruel. At the rate this is going, Cersei will go "well you know, shit happens" when Joffrey gets offed in season 4

The two scenes were actually really good per se, but they generally have the negative effect in making the characters (Jaime and Cersei) much much less intersting.Jaime with his "code" and inner conflict is more intersting than ruthless Jaime, same story with Cersei: much better a halfmad full of rage than "all for my children even if one is mad/relating to Sansa" mom.

That would be the best scene ever filmed if she did that then "more wine please"

-John Snow is an idiot now apparently

- I think they're dropping Jamies redemption arc. There's no sight of the mummers anyways.

- The Jeyne story is annoying me but I guess it's not that different from the book

-Who is going to save Rickon?

- Tyrion and Cersei are buddybuddy now? And Cersei is bad talking one of her children? What is going on here?

I love the new additions to Dany's story. The 13 getting their throats slit was great.

very minor nitpick here: sansa and shae are going to flip a mattress by lifting both sides of it simultaneously. really curious to see what their next move would have been if the hound hadnt showed up

Well if they both lift it up, they can just flip it around to have it top down

-The Harrenhal scenes are great, but it lacks the level of grit from the book. Arya doesn't seem to face that much hardship.

- Jon chasing after Ygritte. I get that they want to establish their future relationship, but if he gets caught by the wildlings then the killing of Qhorin won't have the same effect. If they are forced to fight, then Jon will only fight to survive rather than give the impression of turning over to the wildlings. That would change the dynamic with Mance later on

I think that's about it.

I would love to see.that comedy of errors. will they flip it like a pancake? rotate it lengthwise?

here's another, more significant one: what the hell is ghost doing? he couldn't track the halfhand? has he abandoned jon.

maybe that's just good writing. ghost decided jon snow is an idiot and is the halfhand's wolf now

For some things they stay incredibly true to the books, and even when they have to change things up they still manage to keep the same tone and keep everything nice and consistent, but for other things it's like they threw the books out the window and are making up completely new things as they go along.

I don't like the change to the Jon/Ygritte/Qhorin arc at all. I haven't found a single redeeming quality about the new arc, and from what it looks like I doubt that they can salvage this. This change is just bad, bad, bad.

I also don't like the change to the Cat/Brienne/Jaime arc. They haven't dug themselves quite as deep as with Jon and Ygritte so I think with some quality writing they can still make it work in the end, but I just have to wonder why they change so much. Even if they have to cut out the Bloody Mummers arc they still have to give Jaime a redemption arc to make up for it, otherwise they are irrevocably changing the character development for the remainder of the series.

Please stop changing things that don't need to be changed!

Perfectly said, even to non-book viewers this is weird. I had a non-book friend message me after watching this ep "Yeah, isnt it kinda funny how both Jamie and Cersei just both admit they fu*k now??"

Also whilst I try not to nitpick(just cause I think it becomes more and more obvious on rewatch) but WHERE THE FU*K IS GHOST??? I could accept that the Wildlings only Just caught him, but in the preview of next week he's being presented to the Lord of Bones...

Surely even non-book viewers are gonna ask "Where is that Gigantic Wolf while all this is happening?"

I'm sure someone will argue budget issues, which is understandable but if thats the case why put Jon in peril when he was never meant to be there? He and the rangers had plenty to do this season without being separated & IMO as a result Qhorin's death just wont mean as much, even if it is his command.

Its a real shame we wont see the Eagle or the rangers drop off 1 by 1(would have made great TV).

I can even deal with the terrible dialogue between Dull Snow/Ygritte, but whats the point in having an incredible Wolf protector if its just never gonna be there.
