THANK YOU!!!! I never ever imagined that you would be so kind as to take the time to write about the history of the Magi's names and my Father's name in particular. I am so excited to show my Dad your column when I see him tomorrow. My Dad was born in 1935. He has advanced Parkinson's Disease and lives in a full-time skilled nursing facility. He has a long history of public service in Puerto Rico. He was Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner to the U.S. House of Representatives for eight years where he co-founded the Hispanic Congressional Caucus (there were only 5 of them at the time) followed by being elected Mayor of San Juan and appointed Associate Justice of PR's Supreme Court for ten years until he retired at age 70.

His body is failing but his mind is as good as ever. He will absolutely love that an esteemed University Professor took an interest in his name and wrote a column about it. I am so very thankful! BTW, his father's name was Romulo, but we all know where that came from! :)

Again, thank you for being so wonderful and thoughtful and brilliant. Happy Three Kings' Day!!

Gracious sakes, your father is obviously much more "esteemed" than I am! It only took a moment to find his official congressional biography through Google:

I am honored to know that you will show my column to him. Though to be honest I was seriously considering writing about the Magi's names any way because the column was to be published on January 6; your request just was the final deciding factor that made it sure I would do it. :)

He's an amazing person and an even better Dad. I tried to pm you what I posted but your inbox is full. I've never really posted about him. He turns 80 in April. Again, thank so for researching and writing about his and Melchor and Gaspar's names. Poor Melchor indeed! It does sound unpalatable. I never realized that Jasper was an iteration of Gaspar. Really fascinating. :)

I remember being anxious to find out via DNA whether or not Ms. Anderson was in fact Anastasia. The last Tzar and his family are very interesting to me. I visited both the Winter and Summer Palaces when I traveled to St. Petersburg two years ago to visit my youngest, who spent his Junior year of College studying in the former Leningrad. There are gazillion Anastasias there. Their nickname in Russia is Nastia, more frequently than Ana. :)

Here's a link to last Tuesday's column. I've been so busy grading term papers I didn't get around to posting before now, sorry.

Very interesting. I happen to be a huge fan of Cassandra as a name (obviously :P )

I have wondered if Sandra was a diminutive of Cassandra?

They have just switched editors on me at the newspaper and it's interesting to see a different style of editing. The new editor recast my list of famous Garys near the end of the column in "bullet" form. I didn't write it that way and no one has ever suggested to me before that such a style would fit for a newspaper column. That particular bit of editing is fine with me -- it's just interesting no other editor has thought to do it before.

Sorry Ormond, only saw the Patrick's day article now. I think it was very good! Certainly accurate. I'd maybe quibble with some of the spellings in Gaelige but minor at worst, a point of fun debate at best.

The different but not too different name i chose for my new little one is an old Irish one, Aisling. It's a form of old Irish poetry and means dream/vision.
