Has he said he was trying to injure Aguero? I remember him saying he was trying to take someone with him, but I read that to mean he was trying to provoke retaliation. (Of course, I wasn't following closely, because I am Greek, so I might have missed something.) Still totally lacking in ethics, but not quite as bad as deliberately injuring someone, IMHO.

PS I think McRae was harshly treated. O'Gara should have got a red for aggressive use of the face and McRae a medal of some kind.

You use the word attacked very loosely.

He attacked two players, and one of them was a retaliation.

People saying he should be done for assault are crazy imo. What he did to Aguero was part of a game in my school growing up! Chicken leg! Ha.

The initial foul was worthy of a red, and he later stated that he hadn't 'lost the plot', but was merely trying to provoke other players. He earned his big ban.

Solent, love the title.

Steven Lenhart is now misappropriating the Goonies in discussions of San Jose's performance. Fuck you for trying to steal my childhood.

In this country, if I went up to a person and kicked them from behind in view of a police officer, I'd probably be arrested. Why should that not apply to someone just because they're on a football pitch?

For the record, I'm not saying he should be sent down or exiled from football forever, just that a 12 game ban is fair.

I was playing a bit fast and loose with the word "attack" as well I admit, but that doesn't change the issue.

1) Elbowing Tevez in the chin. Doesn't matter if he was retaliating or not - he elbowed a guy and got caught = straight red.

2) Kicked Aguero out under the referees nose. Putting aside the fact that he was aiming to take Aguero out of the game, that's a straight red as well, minimum. Obvious stuff. Aguero falling like a sack of shit is another issue.

3) Went to headbutt Kompany. Any headbutt or attempted head butt is a straight red.

Thats the ten game minimum I've got anyhow. Can't fault his contribution to the drama though eh

I agree with the first two points but I can't understand why so many people are apparently ignoring that the headbutt was Lescott pushing him. And that's my real bugbear in this issue - Barton is a loathsome scrote who should be getting banned for ages and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he never played another Prem game regardless of the length of the ban, but there are two City players getting off scot-free for their parts in it.

Fair point - am undecided if I think Kompany is culpable or not, but Tevez was certainly a part in the whole thing.

That seems like a fair point, especially given the level of theater in SOME LEAGUES I WILL NAME NO NAMES.

Would Liverpool fans be happy with Martinez?

If Joey Barton wasn't a footballer, he'd be in prison

Well, there's faking injury, and there's faking injury. I've never seen anyone faking injury by lying still on the ground not moving.

He's not in the top-5 wishlist for most of the fanbase and it feels like a big leap of faith.

I'd go for someone like Rudi Garcia myself... maybe Paul Lambert. AVB worth a shot also.

Being Canadian, what do you think about whether or not Montagliani decides to expand the Cup to the D3 and lower divisions. He seems to be the first CSA president that's open to it, granted that the clubs involved can afford to compete in the Champions League.

I think it is a fine idea.  I think a cup competition such as this should be open to all teams in a country, and this could be good for developing Canadian players, too (certainly for shining a spotlight on young players on lower div. teams).  The competition between the lower division teams would be very interesting, though I assume that the MLS sides would get to skip the early rounds of the tournament if this is implemented.
