Transplanted from another thread, in order to keep that one on-topic:

guys are they gonna split s3 in two and join the last part of s3 witf AffC and do an s5 for ADWD or what ???

Yes to ASoS (book 3) covering seasons 3 and 4 of the show.  Beyond that, nobody knows for sure.  The speculation, which I think is plausible, is that some of the early parts of both AFfC and ADwD might sneak into the end of season 4.  For instance:

Spoiler

Remember also that AFfC and ADwD occur mostly concurrently, with only the latter chapters of ADwD happening after the events at the end of AFfC.  Therefore, season 5 of the show will need to cover roughly the first half of both of those books, as opposed to all of AFfC (book 4).  Another example:

Spoiler

Those are my thoughts.

Speaking as a long-serving expert on all things regarding this forum, I gotta say: Listen to J.S. Crews, the man knows his stuff. Seems very plausible to me.

I don't wanna come across as a kiss-ass, but I've been reading this board for quite some time and you seem to be one of the few voices of reason among the plethora of hysteric fanboys/girls (alright, alright, I'm a fanboy, too) that populate this place. Maybe this should have been a PM. No homo (not that there's anything wrong with it!).

I think that they'll be some overlap. S3 will mostly just cover the first half of SOS but also with some elements from COK like Riverrun and The Reeds. Also I'm thinking Dany's arc will be changed so that S3 focuses entirely on her in Astapor getting her army. There's plenty of stuff to work with especially if the tail end of the Qarth stuff is also in S3 (i.e Barristan saving Dany from the assassin.) and if they introduce Daario here as well (casting has begun.). It gives us Dracarys as a season finale. I think they'll also introduce a mini-arc of Theon being transformed into Reek. Nothing major, just a few scenes, ending with his attempted escape from the Dreadfort.

S4 will I think, cover the second half of SOS, but also some stuff from AFFC and maybe even ADWD. Namely I think Brienne's arc will be moved forwards seeing as she pretty much vanishes after her and Jaime get to KL, but that isn't going to work on TV. Also considering Balon will likely die towards the end of S3 this also means we can get the Kingsmoot subplot in S4 as well. In addition I think that some of Bran's arc in ADWD will be moved to S4. He just vanishes after passing beyond the Wall (which will likely happen at the end of S3.) so some of his travels with Coldhands are to be expected, with his S4 arc ending with him reaching BR's cave. Dany's arc will I think, merge Yunkai with Meereen into one city with her conquest of it taking elements from both subplots from the books (so the sellsword stuff and the sewers.). Theon's arc can mostly vanish from this season, but with a reapearance in E10 with his first DWD chapter as a plot hook.

S5 will I think cover the remainder of AFFC and a large portion of DWD.  If we look at AFFC there is only 48 chapters to adapt and of that 12 (Brienne and the Kingsmoot.) can be shifted to S4, and most of the rest is based in KL. So it should be perfectly manageable to compress all that. I also think the timelines will be shifted so that AFFC and ADWD overlap more. I think the finale for S5 will be Dany flying off on Drogon. Hopefully this can be a 12 episode season.

Then S6 will cover the remainder of ADWD and the first part of TWOW with the battles of ice and fire as the finale. Then S7 would cover the remainder of TWOW. Season 8 would cover book 7 and should there be an 8th book S9 would cover that (both hopefully 12 episodes.).

I was merely being optimistic, I realise It's unlikely. But I still see a possibility if the show continues to do well. In any case my theory could still work with 10 episodes for S5.

Agree.  And even though it seems ASOS will be told over 2 seasons, there may even be some of it delayed until those bits can be combined with AFFC - the writers seem to have indicated that they are taking a 'big picture' view of the story over the next three books.  Plus the writers have to:-

1.  Look at keeping the key continuing characters in viewers' minds over all the seasons - they can't have a major character just disappear for most of a season (hence we've had Jaime appear in Eps 1 and 7 of Season 2 when he only really reappeared towards the end of ACOK)

2.  Arrange the storyline for each season so that there are natural high points and cliffhangers throughout the season.  Obviously they can't have every episode end on a cliffhanger, but they still have to be able to end each one at a point that keeps viewers eager for the next instalment.   As we've seen so far in Series 1 and 2, they sometimes group the scenes in an episode around a particular theme, so in addition to combining the two books chronologically, they will probably also continue with some 'theme' episodes as a way of providing focus at particular points..

Let's take a look at Storm, Feast & Dance and their major plotlines, and the distribution of them over the course of the upcoming seasons.

Firstly, Clash/Season 2, predicting the ending of the storyline in the tv-show.
  • Tyrion - based on the last episode summary 'Tyrion awakens to a changed situation'  Tyrion his arc ends the same as in the books. He wakes up from the Battle of Blackwater, hearing that they won and his place as Hand has been taken by his father. Cersei and Joffrey their arc will end the same way aswell, probably having Margaery engaged to Joffrey by the end of the season, to end her arc aswell.
  • Arya - based on the last episode summary 'Arya receives a gift from Jaqen'  she gets the coin from Jaqen. Afterwards she'll most likely escape from Harrenhall with Gendry and Hot Pie.
  • Jon Snow - based on the last episode summary 'Jon proves himself to Qhorin'  his story ends the same, joining Rattleshirt, Ygritte and the other Wildlings after he murdered Qhorin.
  • Sansa - the episode summary says nothing about Sansa. But her story could end the same as in the book, Dontos promising her he'll rescue her. I think it'll happen, otherwise they introduced Dontos for no reason.
  • Bran - basing on info that the last scene that was shot for the season, with Bran, Rickon, Osha, Hodor and Luwin, it'll end the same as the books.
  • Catelyn - the scene from A Man Without Honor with Brienne and Jaime is Catelyn's last scene from Clash, they'll put some of the Brienne and Jaime chapters from Storm in Season 2. Based on the last episode summary 'Brienne silences Jaime'  the end the season with their sword fight. Also, they're extending the love relationship with Robb and Jeyne.
  • Theon - either way they're postponing the Sack  to Season 3 or they have an armoured and helmed knight  (Ramsay) sack Winterfell in the final episode, ending Theon's arc the same as in the books, his faith remaining unknown.
  • Daenerys - based on the last episode summary 'Dany goes to a strange place'  they let Dany visit the House of the Undying in the final episode. Therefore moving the later chapter with Barristan to the next season.
  • Davos - we have no idea how they're going to end his arc this season, either way him drowning, sitting on a rock, or returning to Dragonstone with Stannis.
  • Chett - based on the first preview the three horn blasts are in this season, most likely ending season 2 with the prologue of Storm, a cliffhanger for Sam, Jeor and the other Night's Watch members.
Secondly, Storm/Season 3 (2013)
  • Arya - her travels through the Riverrlands with Gendry and Hot Pie, her capture by the Broterhood without Banners (introducing Beric, Thoros, etc), her kidnap by Sandor, ending her arc with ambiguous death at the Red Wedding.
  • Jon Snow - meeting up with Mance, and the other major wildlings, his mission with Styr, the events at Queenscrow (most likely E7 Autumn Winds), ending the season with his escape from the wildlings.
  • Catelyn - her house arrest at Riverrun, introduction of Edmure, Brynden and Hoster, ending the season with her and Robb's death at the Red Wedding.
  • Jaime - his travels through the Riverrlands with Brienne, his hand being chopped off, ending the season with being released from Harrenhall and his journey to Kings' Landing.
  • Tyrion - King's Landin scenes with Tywin, Joffrey, Sansa, Cersei, arrival and introduction of Oberyn (and Mace), ending his arc with his marriage to Sansa.
  • Sansa - her scenes with the Tyrells (introducing more of them to the plot, Olena for example) and Dontos, ending her arc with her marriage to Tyrion.
  • Davos - saved from the rock, planning to kill Melisandre, trying to learn to read, ending his arc with his imprisonment.
  • Daenerys - meeting up with Barristan, travelling to Slaver's Bay, conquering Astapor and Yunkai, ending her arc infront of the gates of Mereen.
  • Samwell - flee from the Fist, becoming Slayer, retreat to Craster's Keep, murder of Jeor and Craster, flee with Gilly and her baby to Whitetree, rescue by Coldhands.
  • Bran - flee from Winterfell, meeting up with Jojen and Meera, Queenscrow, ending his arc at the gate of the Nightfort with Samwell, Gilly and Coldhands.
Thirdly, Storm/Season 4 (2014)
  • Arya - travels with Sandor, Saltpans, ending her arc with Valar Morghulis on the Titan's Daughter.
  • Jon Snow - battle for Castle Black, imprisonment by Alliser and Janos, negotiations with Mance, suprise attack by Stannis, ending his arc with his promotion to commandor of the Night's Watch.
  • Jaime - arrival at Kings Landing, sex with Cersei  infront of Joffrey's corpse, giving Oathkeeper to Brienne and sending her on a quest for Sansa and Arya, ending his arc with releasing Tyron.
  • Tyrion - Joffrey's wedding, imprisonment by Cersei, trial by combat (death of Oberyn and Gregor), escape by Jaime and Varys, murder of Tywin, ending his arc on a boat across the Narrow Sea.
  • Sansa - escape from King's Landing during the Purple Wedding by Dontos and Littlefinger, retreat to the Vale, becoming Alayne, ending her arc with the murder of Lysa.
  • Davos - learning to read, rescueing Edric, sending Stannis to the Wall, ending his arc at the Wall.
  • Daenerys - conquering Mereen, banishing Jorah, ending her arc when she decides to stay and rule in Mereen.
  • Samwell - return to Castle Black, ending his arc by helping Jon to become commander of the Night's Watch.
  • Bran - his travels north of the Wall withColdhands, Jojen, Meera and Hodor.
  • Merret -  ending the season with his prologue, and the return of Catelyn.
One problem that occurs is the following: where are the Greyjoys? I don't think they won't show AshaYara, Balon and Theon for two seasons. Solution?
  • Theon - a few scenes spread over the seasons of him slowly transforming into Reek, introduction of Ramsay.
  • Yara  - at Torrhen's Square, returning to Pyke after she hears the new about her father and his brothers.
  • Balon - introduction of Victaron, sending his brother to Moat Cailin, ending his arc with his death.
  • Victarion - introduced on Pyke, perhaps some interaction with Yara at Torrhen's Square, interaction with the Crannogman at Moat Cailin, returning to Pyke when he hears the news about Euron.
  • Euron - returning to Pyke after Balon's death, interaction with Euron and Aeron.
  • Aeron - introduced on Pyke, calling out the Kingsmoot.
Introduction to the remaining Greyjoys in Season 3 and Season 4is crucial for the story, doing it this way (ending their arc with calling out the Kingsmoot) would probably work.

Fourtly, Feast and Dance/Season 5 (2015)
  • Theon - events at the Dreadfort, peace negotiations at Moat Cailing with the Iron Born, ending the season with his arrival at Winterfell.
  • Jon Snow - interactions with Stannis, sending Samwell and Gilly away (including the babyswap), allowing the wildlings through the Wall, ending his arc with the bruning of fake Mance, sending the real one to Winterfell to save his sisters.
  • Bran  - travels through the Lands of Always Winter, ending his arc with his arrival at Bloodraven's cave.
  • Davos - leaving the Wall to White Harbour with Saladhor, events at the Sisters, arrival at White Harbour, ending his arc with his imprisonment by Wyman. He's faith will remain ambiguos, sinceCersei will have his death confirmed.
  • Brienne - her travels through the Riverlands, her capture by Stoneheart, ending her arc with her ambiguous death.
  • Cersei - her failures in Kings' Landing building up to her imprisonment by the Faith.
  • Jaime - Tywin's funeral, leaving King's Landing to retake Riverrun, negotiations with Brynden, ending his arc as he retakes Riverrun.
  • Sansa - her transformation to Alayne, including other events at the Vale with Littlefinger.
  • Aeron - organising the Kingsmoot, afterwards he dissapears.
  • Victaron - taking part at the Kingsmoot, raiding the Shield Islands on Euron's command, ending his arc with being send after Daenerys.
  • Yara - taking part at the Kingsmoot, leaving for Torrhen's Square after the Kingsmoot, ending her arc as she's captured by Stannis.
  • Arianne - her schemes to crown Myrcella, imprisonment by Doran, ending her arc by revealing of Doran's plans and setting up Quentyn's story for the next season.
  • Aero - introduction to Doran, there's a chance he won't even be cast.
  • Samwell - his travels on the boat from the Wall to Braavos to Oldtown, including the death of Aemon, ending his arc upon his arrival at the Citadel.
  • Tyrion - flee from Westeros, arrival at Pentos, interaction with Illyrio, introduction to Griff, Young Griff and the rest of the crew, travels to Volantis, ending his arc as he's being captured by Jorah.
  • Daenerys - her interactions with the people at Mereen, the Harpy, the Green Grace, ending his arc with her marriage to Hizdahr.
  • Pate - his prologue can appear before Samwell makes it to the Citadel, no need to do this at the beginning of the season.
Finally, Feast and Dance/Season 6 (2016)
  • Theon - the Jeyne and Ramsay wedding, the events with Mance and his spearwives, escape from Winterfell, ending his arc as he is captured by Stannis.
  • Jon Snow - arrival of Alys, events building up to his assassination, ending his arc with his ambiguous death.
  • Bran - introduction of the Children of the Forest and Bloodraven.
  • Davos - release by Wyman, send to Skagos to get Rickon back, ending his arc on a boat or at Skagos.
  • Cersei - imprisonment by the Faith, and her Walk of Shame, ending her arc with a dinner with Kevan and Tommen.
  • Jaime - retaking Raventree Hall, ending his arc when he leaves with Brienne.
  • Sansa - a few scenes at the Vale with Littlefinger, ending her arc with her engaged to Harry the Heir.
  • Victaron - his travels to Slaver's Bay, introduction of Moqorro, ending his arc before the attack on Slaver's Bay.
  • Yara - her imprisonment by Stannis, ending her arc when she sees Theon again.
  • Quentyn - his travels from Volantis to Mereen, arrival at Mereen, interaction with Daenerys, scheming to steal one of the dragons, ending his arc with his demise.
  • Arianne - a few scenes in Dorne with Doran revealing his plans to let the Sand Snake's go to King's Landing, ending her arc when she's send to Aegon.
  • Tyrion - travels with Jorah, capture by the slavers, sold to Yezzan, escape from Yezzan, ending his arc with his plans to switch sides with the Second Sons.
  • Daenerys - events at Mereen, interactions with Quentyn, disappearance from Mereen on Drogon's back, ending her arc identical to the books.
  • Barristan - preparing for the war against Yunkai after Daenerys' disappearance,
  • Jon Connigton - arrival at Westeros with Aegon, conquering of Griffin's Roost and his march toward Storm's End.
Like this it gives George 4 more years to finish Winds. Probably D&D will do it differently than this, but this is my take on the future progression of the HBO series.

@Crown

I agree with a lot of that but not all. Elaborating on my previous post:

Season 2 - COK:
  • Tyrion: Arc finishes as in the book, but also with Joffrey's betrothal to Margaery.
  • Sansa: We finally get her meeting with Dontos in the Godswood, else he would have been moved forwards to S3.
  • Davos: Sitting on that rock before being rescued by Salladhor Saan (rather than a random captain.).
  • Robb and Cat: Robb's marriage to Jeyne, heading towards Riverrun.
  • Jaime: Is released with Brienne in episode 8. Has his hand cut off by Bolton men in E10.
  • Arya: Some aproximation of Weasel Soup. Ends with her escape from Harrenhal with Gendry and Hot Pie.
  • Theon: The Sack of Winterfell and being taken by Ramsay (who will be a helmeted extra to be recast later.).
  • Bran: Emerging from the Crypts.
  • Jon: Killing Qhorin and being taken by the wildlings.
  • Samwell: Finds the dragonglass in E8. The three horn blasts on the Fist, also acting as the last scene of the season.
  • Dany: House of the Undying.
Season 3 - SOS part 1:
  • Tyrion: Being demoted to Master of Coin, marriage to Sansa takes place roughly half-way through the season. Arc finishes with Oberyn arriving at KL.
  • Sansa: Plotting with Dontos and interacting with the Tyrells. Marriage to Tyrion. Ends with her grieving over the RW.
  • Davos: Arriving at Dragonstone, learning to read. Half way through tries to kill Melisandre (as oppossed to straight away as in the books.) and is imprisoned. Arc finishes with his release and the burning of the leeches. Though this will have to happen in like episode 7 so none of the Dragonstone crew for the last few episodes.
  • Cat and Robb: Negotiations with the Freys and continued war effort. Arc ends with the RW in E9.
  • Jaime: Taken to Harrenhal, develops relationship with Brienne. Arc ends with rescuing Brienne in E8.
  • Arya: Taken by the BWB, then by The Hound. Is knocked out at the RW, but her arc will end with her wolf dream of Cat in the river.
  • Bran: Traveling north, meets the Reeds and splits off from Osha and Rickon. Arc finishes with him meeting Sam and passing beyond the Wall.
  • Jon: Traveling with Widlings, develops relationship with Ygritte and climbs the Wall. Flees back to castle black and his arc ends with Ygritte's death.
  • Samwell: The Night's Watch breaking free of the Fist. Sam kills an Other. Travels with Gilly, arc ends with meeting Bran and making his way off to Castle Black.
  • Theon: Bought to the Dreadfort and tortured. Arc ends with his attempted escape.
  • Ironborn: Some scenes of Asha and Victarion in their conquest of the north. Balon dies as the climax of episode 7. The ironborn arc ends in E9 with them getting the news that Balon is dead and that Aeron has called for a Kingsmoot.
  • Danny: Meets Barristan and sails to Slaver's bay. Entire season focuses on Astapor and the Unsullied, however Daario and the Stormcrows are also introduced. Arc ends with Dracarys which can also act as the season finale.
Season 4 - SOS part 2:
  • Tyrion: The PW in E1. Imprisonment, trial and trial by combat. Arc ends with his release by Varys and Jaime and his killing Tywin.
  • Sansa: PW and escape to the Vale. Arc ends with Lysa's death.
  • Jaime: Arrives at KL after the PW. Falling out with Cersei, sends Brienne on her quest.
  • Brienne: Sets out to find Sansa about halfway through the season. Arc ends with her hanging by Uncat which can act as the season finale without any need for Merret.
  • Davos: an invented Storm's End subplot inspired by the events in COK, introducing us to Edric Storm. Gets Edric to safety and persuades Stannis to sail to the Wall. Arc ends at the Wall (unlike in the books were he dissapears.).
  • Arya: Travels with the Hound (probably to be expanded upon.). Arc ends with her setting sail for Braavos.
  • Ironborn: The Kingsmoot subplot, introduces Aeron and Euron. Ends with Euron being declared King.
  • Theon: Doesn't appear for most of the season but in E10 we see his first ADWD chapter as a plot hook.
  • Jon: Battle at the Wall. I think Sam will turn up earlier than he does in the books. Imprisonment and negotiations with Mance and then Stannis' arrival at the Wall. Ends with him being selected as LC.
  • Bran: His travels beyond the wall with Coldhands. Ends with him reaching BR's cave.
  • Dany: Conquest of Meereen (no Yunkai.) with elements of both her conquests of Meereen and Yunkai in the books. Ends with her decision to stay in Meereen.
Season 5 - AFFC/ADWD:
  • Cersei: Ruling KL, attempts to off Margaery. Captured by the Faith and her arc ends with her walk of shame.
  • Jaime: Sent out of KL. Negotiations in the Riverlands. Arc ends with him going off with Brienne.
  • Arianne: Myrcella's crowning, her imprisonment and Doran revealing his plans. Then we don't see Dorne for a while but her arc picks back up in the last couple of episodes to end with Doran receiving Gregor's head.
  • Sansa: Learns to be Alayne, LF negotiating with the Vale lords. Her arc ends with the decent from the Eyrie.
  • Arya: In the House of Black and White, learning to be a FM. Arc ends with her blindness.
  • Theon: Is now Reek. Ramsay's wedding, Mance and the spearwives. Arc ends with him escaping from Winterfell with Jeyne.
  • Asha: Flees from the Isles, captured by Stannis, the march towards Winterfell. Arc ends with the burning of the cannibals.
  • Jon: Is now LC. Negotiations with Stannis and the Wildlings. Arc ends with him letting Tormund's wildlings across the Wall.
  • Bran: In the cave with BR. Expands his lessons on being a Greenseer. Arc ends with the Weirwood paste.
  • Tyrion: Travels across Essos, ends arc with his being sold into slavery.
  • Aegon: Traveling towards Dany but then turns to Westeros. Ends arc with the taking of Griffin Roost.
  • Quentyn: Arc starts in E4 after Doran has revealed his plans to Arianne. Ends with him in Meereen after being rejected by Dany.
  • Victarion: Reaving the Shield Isles, sent to find Dany, we'll probably see more of his travels through say Volantis. Arc ends with him sailing towards Meereen.
  • Dany: Ruling Meereen. Arc ends with the fighting pits and her flying off on Drogon.
Season 6 - ADWD/TWOW:

Can't really say much on this season till TWOW is released but this will cover the rest of ADWD and TWOW up until the battles of ice and fire.

I still think some characters’ arcs for Season Four will require pulling in particular story-beats from Feast and Dance. The question is which ones?

I think it is naïve in the extreme to imagine that they will hold off on Feast and Dance for Seasons Three and Four, and that all of Storm will take up two full seasons. There are a bunch of reasons for that, but let’s see how the character arcs work out if they can pick and choose not according to book–season match-ups.

Very interesting ideas laid-out here.  Let me say that I prefer it to be stetched-out as much as possible, both because I friggin' love it and want to be watching it for a long time; and so that the show doesn't have to go completely off-the-rails and create 100% new material.  This could be disastrous, because, as we know D&D are privy to the broad strokes of how the whole thing is supposed to end -- as a result, and depending on how much of GRRM's plans they decided to keep, we could all be spoiled before the later books even come out.  Granted, if they have to write their own material, a lot will be changed, but if the ending is similar, it'll be a problem.

As to the ideas put-forth above, there's a lot I'd like to comment on, but I'm short on time.  One thing I will say is I fully expect "Dracarys!" to be season finale fodder for season 3, or, at least, the finale of Dany's arc.  It's a moment made for TV after being preceded by the building drama of her maybe having to sell one of the dragons, and I remember literally exulting when I read it, so happy was I to see the Astapori get their comeuppance (puppy and baby murderers!).  Then, I think Yunkai and Mereen will be combined... and the sets will look suspiciously like Astapor.  It would be a smart move to reuse and compress as much as possible, both to save $$$ and streamline the narrative.  A lot happens in Mereen, not much in Yunkai; it'll be easy to meld the two together.

Also, as I stated above, since we all know the events in AFfC and ADwD happen nearly concurrently, season 5 of the show can cover roughly the first half of both of those books.  Only the latter chapters of ADwD occur post-AFfC, so Season 6 can easily play-out the latter halves of both books without even touching a significant portion of TWoW.  This would stretch things out another year to allow for GRRM's writing and our enjoyment.

I’ve long thought much the same thing.  They do have to develop the culture of Old Ghis and Slaver Bay, what with the tokars and such (which I believe are just fancy fringed togas). But once you’ve seen one pyramid, you’ve seen them all.

The main problem I have with all this is how to balance out everybody’s story-arc so that you don’t go a year or two without seeing somebody. You can’t let any of the main characters from Game get lost, meaning the Starks, Dany, and Tyrion.

Whether Theon gets lost for a long time, I don’t know, but certainly the Ironborn will be developed so that Victarion’s horn comes to Dany.

I don’t know how much of Dorne we’ll see.  But I promise we’ll see plenty of Tywin, which is a good thing. If we know one thing for sure, it’s that when the showrunners take a liking to an actor or actress, they give that person more screentime.  This may have some bearing on Theon.

It’s hard for me to come up with enough story-arc for Bran, though, even if you pull in everything.

They may have to add to Bran's arc and tweak it, so the purists can freak out all over again.   :)

Actually, I am a bit of a purist too; it just doesn't seem that way, because I understand how TV and budgets work, and so choose not to b!tch over every inconsequential change.

I think it is worthwhile checking what the writers and producers have to say about adapting the complex story lines, and showing the books over the next few seasons.   No, they are not going to please those who complain about even tiny little aspects being omitted, but I would say they have every intention of doing their best to keep faith with GRRM himself, with the books and with the many fans.

(Not sure if that is posted here, but could not see it)

Re: your original remarks on Tyrion's arc J.S. Crews:

I really hope that they keep the ending intact for Season 4. "Where ever whores go", crossbow, lack of gold, Tyrion disappears down the fireplace. THEN in Season 5 I would absolutely love it if they kept him out of the first two or three so people could really enjoy Cersei's paranoia that he might be in the walls still, before ending perhaps episode 3 with his head poking out of a barrel.

I've still yet to see anyone provide a suitable finale for Season 5. I guess it would be somewhere around two thirds through Feast, halfway through Dance? Which concerns me, I think we'll be bracing ourselves for a lot of invented material come that season, after what I hope will be a superb third and fourth season.

That would work from a narrative standpoint, but it seems they're fond of having big climaxes in ep. 9 with ep. 10 serving to show the aftermath and set-up the following season.  That's why I think we'll at least see him drunk on the ship, crossing the Narrow Sea.  But your way works too.

Without regard for where in the book these events fall, Season 5's finale could be any one of:

- Bran arriving at Bloodraven's cave.
- Cersei's imprisonment by the Faith.
- Stannis showing-up at the Wall.

There are probably others, and, as I said, this is based strictly on narrative and thematic value, rather than strict chronology.

It might be naive for me to think that they're going to need two seasons for Storm and some added scenes for the Ironborn, and use two seasons for Feast and Dance. But I think they need to stretch it out a little to give GRRM time to finish Winds.

ASoS is definitely 2 seasons; that's been announced.  I also think AFfC and ADwD will cover, at least, 2 seasons, but together -- not 2 seasons each.  One season for the first half of each and another for the remainder.  Although, I would be fine if they did stretch it even further; just not sure it would work thematically.

Each season needs to end with a bang though.  With Season 1, its Ned Starks execution.  With Season 2, its Blackwater.  Season 4, the battle on the wall.  I figure that the time line for both the Red and Purple weddings will be synched so they happen in the same episode (S03E09 or S03E10).

One thing to remember is were dealing with child actors.  The actor who plays Joffrey is growing fast so I don't see them keeping him for 2 years.  This is the same reason why we dont see the Reed children now.  Kids grow fast so they have to plan on it.
