There have been rumours that the Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju (perhaps best known to international audiences for his role in The Thing (2011)) would appear in GoT, but until recently the rumours were only rumours. However, Hivju confirmed yesterday that he had a successful audition a few days ago. The role hasn't been cast yet, though (he's only a candidate for the role at this moment).

Hivju candidate for Game of Thrones

Impressed auditioned for the hit television series.

Actor Christopher Hivju, who works at Trøndelag Teater, confirmed Friday night that he is a candidate for a role in the television series Game of Thrones.

It was in the television program Lindmo actor got the great news.

The last month there have been rumors that Hivju was appropriate for U.S. series success - and there were these rumors that the producers had to call Hivju into the audition.

- I went over and did a good audition. For two hours they called back and was very happy. So now it hold for the rumors, said to Anne Hivju Lindmo - who was clearly impressed.

Hivju is also about to shoot the film "After Earth" with Will Smith and appeared in "The Thing" in 2011.

I did a transcript of the part where they discussed his audition for GoT..

Lindmo: There are strong rumors that you're likely to earn a role in the huge American fantasy series Game of Thrones. Any truth in that?

Hivju: When that rumor came about – it started at some American websites – there were no truth in it. That's to say, they had my photo, as they did for many other actors. But, as that rumor started to gain traction, I suppose the casting people started asking themselves, "Who is this guy? We have to check him out." So my agent pulled some strings, and all of a sudden I got an audition – which I did yesterday. And just two hours ago they called me up, and they were really excited, and they want me to stay on [for further audition rounds]. So I can say now that the rumor is TRUE!

A strong, interesting face, looks like he'd make a great... Viking.  From the grammar in his interview though, it sounds like his English is a bit rough, but I guess the show people can work with that.  Anybody got any ideas who he's auditioning for?  And, anybody know how to pronounce 'Hivju?'  :P

Hivju is pronounced basically as written: HIVJU. For english speakers "Heav" with stress on "v" and  JU like the letter U.:-)
The text is translated in google or similar from his Norwegian, so one should`nt put much stock in the grammar.
Norwegians usually have very good grammar, but southern Norwegians like Hivju usually have quite strong accents:-)
Love to see more Norwegians in the show, of course!

Casting directors and directors are always looking for interesting, memorable faces, and Hivju does have that 'stereotypical' Viking-look in my opinion.

EDIT: After watching the entire interview, I think I know what you mean. But it's typical for Norwegians to exaggerate English dialogue in that manner for dramatic or comedic effect, when they talk to other Norwegians. So it doesn't surprise me that he talks like that in a talk show.

And even if his English verbal skills are not that good, it won't matter that much if he decides to learn his lines phonetically. Many non-english actors learn to speak their lines that way (it makes them sound much more fluent in English than they really are).

The rumours indicate that he's auditioning for the role of Tormund Giantsbane, but it's not been confirmed yet, AFAIK.

Is there actually evidence he's auditioning for Tormund is has everyone simply assumed that from him looking exactly like Tormund? :P

Yeah ok, I remember this guy from The Thing, I liked him in that.  I'm not sure how well he can pull off a Tormund, that's a real "strong" character, he sure does have the look though.
