[Book Spoilers]Why would Cat let Jaime go before she hears of Bran and Rickon?

I'm a bit confused here.

I thought the real reason Cat let Jaime go was because she wanted her daughters back after she'd heard she'd lost 2 of her children. Is it possible she'd already had the letter? I'm sorry but I can't find a reason other than that for Cat to become a traitor and let the man who'd nearly killed her child to go.

It was explained right before: Jaime Lannister is going to be killed by the Karstarks before the night is done, and before Robb arrives. Catelyn's choice is to let him be killed -- inviting reprisals against her daughters and certainly losing him as a possible trade for them -- or letting him go in the hopes that he survives and that Brienne safely delivers him to KL to see her daughters returned.

It worked okay for me. But it's true that the way it is in the novels in richer and more emotionally textured.

I've been thinking about this since I saw the episode and at first I thought releasing Jaime in the show would make Cat an even worse traitor, but I've since decided that in the show her reasons might actually be better, because it's an emergency and she's forced to act. If she doesn't release him, her daughters might get killed in reprisal. But having better reasons doesn't make the story better. I still prefer the way it's in the books, it's why Cat gets so much love and hate from us.
