Anyone else noticed that Jon sometimes make jokes that his company find inappropriate or lame? Two examples:

… from farther east, perhaps … one hears queer talk of dragons.”
“Would that we had one here. A dragon might warm things up a bit.”
“My lord jests. You will forgive me if I do not laugh. We Braavosi are descended from those who fled Valyria and the wroth of its dragonlords. We do not jape of dragons.”

ADwD

You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You’ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers.”
Arya didn’t think it was funny.

AGoT

And there are few others that he is not called upon that I find lame. I think this is deliberate portrait of character from GMMR's part as he is able to write people as Tyrion, Jaime and the Hound. (Yes, Sandor has sense of humor and I love it) I wonder if Rhaegar's sense of humor was any better. Maybe there was a good reason why he portrayed himself as a melancholic tragic hero.

Were there others? I'm trying to think of Jon and humour and they just don't mix. Can't even remember him laughing offhand. He ended up a lot more like Ned that way than Robb.

That's not humour dude. With the Braavosi, he was engaging conversation with a stranger and with Arya, a "private joke". Find something else ;)

That's just Jon Snow trying to pass his melancholy as humor. That never works.

Jon's sense of humour is perfectly fine - it's why he gets on with people such as Tyrion, Dolorous Edd, Pyp and Tormund.

Jon himself isn't particularly funny or witty, but not everybody is. He's not funny but often shares a bit of lighthearted conversation or teasing (which the OPs two examples count as, rather than attempts to be laugh out loud hilarious). Mostly you see it when he is hanging out with girls; Arya in GoT or in the latest book Alys Karstark (at her wedding) and Val (when he's about to take her into an audience with Selyse).

I believe that Jon is just a very serious person...much like Ned in this way. Alot of this may have resulted due to him just trying to strike up conversation, especially with those he was not privy to. :dunno:

Quote

"I have heard it said that your queen has a great dark beard." Jon knew he should not smile, but he did. "Only a mustache. Very wispy. You can count the hairs."

His humor is very dry I think. He's usually surrounded by funny people like Dolorous, Tormund, Val, etc.

I don't think he's not funny because he has the tendency to be serious. Stannis is too but he's hilarious unlike Jon but with him it's not intentional.

Actually, the dragon joke made me chuckle outloud a bit when i read it... Not 'cos it was really funny, but because it was Jon who said it...

A couple of "that's what she said" jokes would have been nice, though...

Jon is pretty boring in general honestly.  He's a good enough person, I guess, and I don't ... you know, hate him? But ... it has to be said ... sweet Jesus he's boring as all hell! Not as boring as Areo Hotah perhaps, but that's just saying he's not quite as boring as watching grass grow.

I don't wish him ill or anything, but next to the ironborn, he's got to be the least enjoyable person to actually read about.  He's ... just ... effing ... boring.

Jon is not a particularly witty person but some of his inner thoughts can be funny. I can appreciate a dry sense of humor. I laughed during Alys Karstark's wedding. When she said that snow in a wedding is sign for a chill marriage or something like that. Jon looked at Selyse and thought 'There must have been a blizzard the day she and Stannis married''

Nah. He was pretty unfunny before everyone started dying. There's a very lame line about Ghost juggling in Book One that made me cringe (in a bad way).

Not everyone can be funny and we already have some really funny characters, Edds and Jaimes quips are great.  Jon's just not the funny type and frankly I would probably shake my head every time he told a joke because he would always look like he was trying too hard.  However, I now find his lack of humor much more humorous. He's just THAT guy, everyone knows THAT guy.

He should've spent less time helping Stannis win the north and more time asking Stannis to teach him the art of deadpan.

I don't think that Stannis could teach him that art. He doesn't even realize how gifted he is.

He gets along with guys like Pyp and Tormund so his sense of humor is fine, but yeah he's way too wooden to be a comedian himself, anytime he attempts at a joke I feel awkward just reading it.

I think Jon can appreciate the humor in others even if he's not naturally funny himself. I don't see how that makes him boring. If anything, it could be called a flaw — imagine the bitching if Jon was the teenage LC who got a Valyrian sword and wildling tail and a direwolf and was hi-LAR-ious.
