Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. This woman gave me my childhood.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. Ditto.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin

Oryx and Crake and The Year of The Flood by Margaret Atwood.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. Both this and the ones above, changed the way I looked at sci-fi.

The Road by Cormac Mcarthy

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

Watchmen by Alan Moore

World War Z by Max Brooks

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

ETA: Oh, and Holy shit, how could I forget The Child Thief by Brom?

In no order: William S Bouroughs, GRRM, Paul Auster, Thomas Harris, Michael Connelley, Douglas Coupland, Iain Banks, Irvine Welsh, Steven Erikson, Cormac Mcarthy, Kurt Vonnegut.

But I can probably think of another 25 authors who I could put in there. Plus I'm just thinking about "at this moment" theres alot of classic authors I've missed out.

I read this series twice, because I didn't get the popularity. Still don't get it :(

To me it was an easy, pleasant and fast paced read. A lot of gore and violence in the books actually, much more than the film.
1st and second books are the best; third book a bit of a turn down...but still I think worthwhile for sci fi / fantasy fans.

Hmm... Not in order except for the top 3:

1- Prince of Nothing / Aspect Emperor - R. Scott Bakker
2- ASOIAF - GRRM
3- The Passage/The Twelve - Justin Cronin
- Gentlemen Bastards - Scott Lynch (I also want to throw in his short story "In the Stacks" from the "Swords and Dark Magic" anthology that was awesome)
- WWZ - Max Brooks
- Matterhorn - Karl Marlantes
- Shogun - James Clavell
- First Law trilogy + BSC + TH - Joe Abercrombie
- WOT - Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson
- The Magicians / The Magician King - Lev Grossman
- The Acts of Caine - Matthew Stover

Honorable mention to "Zone One" by Colson Whitehead, "Thirteen" and "Altered Carbon" by Richard Morgan, and "The Expanse" trilogy (especially "Leviathan Wakes") by James SA Corey.

I think that's 11, but oh well...

My favourite authors are very non-fantasy (with a few notable exceptions)

1. Emily Bronte
2. Daphne du Maurier
3. GRRM
4. Anya Seton
5. Joanne Harris
6. Phillip Pullman
7. Charlotte Bronte
8. JKR
9. Elizabeth Chadwick
10.  Penelope Lively

Yea, I know, I'm such a typical woman. Maybe that's why I'm not getting along with the fantasy recs people give me. Maybe I should read the latest Philippa Gregory release next and admit defeat...
