The risk of being knifed is small, IMO, unless you are meeting Inigima for the first time.

There. That about sums up what I know about MD. :P Well, that and there are awesome people there, as shown in this very thread. Good luck making a decision, Bones!

Oh, and there is a likelyhood that I would be based in Bethesda.

View PostFez, on 16 June 2012 - 06:14 AM, said:

The thing about Bethesda, and all the Maryland suburbs of DC, is that they're expensive, boring, white-flight filled neighborhoods with bad traffic and are serviced by possibly the most unreliable major metro line in the United States; certainly the worst by far in the DC system.

I was 21 in Bethesda last Summer and wasn't a huge fan.  I didn't go out enough, and that was my own fault, however I found Bethesda to be exactly what I will be looking for at 30-35 with maybe a new wife or a baby or something.  I always found myself taking the subway to go to younger districts to go out.  Bethesda was full of Haagen Daaz shops and hat carts etc. and I always found myself missing grass.

What shouldn't be underestimated is Natty Boh.  It is everything you have ever hoped to find in beer and more.  You can replace all of your crappy inbev beers with Natty Boh.  Craft Brews and Natty Bohs are all you will ever need!  Also, Ini has the scoop on all of the Laser Tag places, the institutional knowledge he brings to the table is too high!

I've never lived in Maryland, but I've visited plenty. Baltimore is a great city, lots to do, friendly, good food. If you like history -- it's loaded. Annapolis is pretty cool, too.

But, taxes are high, and, particularly in the DC area, traffic is a nightmare. Cost of living is tough there as well.

With a two or three exceptions (they are not natives), no one in Maryland knows how to drive.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to live in the DC area (MD or VA but I'd love to live in the city) unless I had to. I don't think I'm built to be happy in an area like that. It's just ... a vibe.

ETA: Camden Yards is a great place to watch a ball game.

PS: Let's not forget the crabs. Oh, the crabcake at Faidley's... how I miss it. There is nothing like it anywhere in the world. (That, and the ribs at the Corner Stable.)

Today I learned there is land East of the Rockies, and that for some reason people actually like it.  Honestly Bonesy - California vs Maryland?

Baltimore is one of those fascinating places that has a culture all it's own, like SoCal or Texas.
This is not exactly a ringing endorsement to a NorCal guy. ;)

Coming from the SF Bay Area I seriously doubt I'd even notice.

I know. That's why I didn't say yes immediately and why I'm asking all of these lovely people to explain to me why one would live in Maryland on purpose.

Hey, I said it has a culture, not "it has a culture you're sure to adore, NorCal guy" ;)

You'll just have to try it out for yourself. Maybe you'll love it.

And anyway my husband is from SoCal, so I can sympathize there.

I have lived in Maryland for my entire life, so I'm obviously pretty biased. Here's some things I like about living here, that I don't think have been emphasized by fellow area residents:

* Central Maryland is located geographically such that you experience all four distinct seasons without generally getting the worst of any one season. We get pleasant, changing weather most of the year without getting the worst of weather. 100+ degree heat waves are uncommon, the sort of thing you talk about for years. Blizzards are often enough that you remember them but not often enough that you get used to them. Hot chicks are scantily clad in the summer. You can take them sledding most winters, then warm them up in your place afterwards.

* Our natural disaster potential is pretty low (knock on wood). You will never spend time wondering about what to do if there's a disastrous earthquake, tornado, hurricane, or wildfire. Unless you live in a specific, locally-flood-prone area, you won't ever worry about flooding.

* You're within a three hours' drive from just about anything you could want. Not to say it's the best iteration of that thing, because honestly, Ocean City, MD has little to recommend it as a beach other than that it's within driving distance for a lot of people. But you can go and lay on the sand in mostly nice weather, check out the Boardwalk and have a good time as long as you're not expecting Waikiki or something. The mountains aren't the Rockies, the lakes aren't (your favorite lake), the cities aren't NYC/Chicago/LA, but they're relatively close by. And between BWI and Reagan National, you can pretty much fly any airline to any place you like.

* It's a generally progressive place where even the conservatives are either in the "just leave us alone" vein or the "let us get rich without annoying rules" vein, rather than the "God told us how you should live your life" vein. I may have to revise my opinion of Maryland politically depending on the results of this fall's referendums on both gay marriage and the DREAM Act (passed by the legislature, petitioned to referendum by the ignorant).

DAMNIT!

That's right!

Well, I suppose I'll have to make sure the pay is good enough to make the payments for Dub raising my children.

Lany is in Baltimore, and busy with a new job; if you can get her attention, she might give you another useful point of view.

If this guy wants you that badly, Bones, get him to fly you out so you can have a look. :)

Bones, you'll get the chance to drink heavily and go to thrash metal shows with MercChef, Kair, SJohn, Mr. X and me on a semi-regular basis. What the fuck else do you need? I'll answer for you: nothing. I have scientifically proven that a job and the above whiskey-fueled circle pit at MDF is all anyone needs to be happy in life.

You can also stop forcing yourself to pretend Steven Lenhart isn't a cockface and cheer for the delightfully red-and-black DC instead. VAMOS UNITED.
