Don't write them off as too expensive - lots of these older actresses like to take on more fun projects. Also, they are not commanding fees of millions even on the big films they do get. Harry Potter could well have been her biggest ever paycheck, but the group of actors who command the millions is very very small - those are the actors that have a track record of gathering crowds on their name alone. Actors like Will Smith, Brad Pitt etc. Much loved though the classically trained actresses of Maggies generation are, they just don't (rightly or wrongly) command that kind of star power.

To wit, I can totally see her wanting in on Game of Thrones! That is unless the visceral nature of the show turns her off. Apart from that though, whats not to love? :D

That was my point. I never believed that Maggie Smith would ask of producers a LOT of money for the role of QOT. But her sense of humour is great, and if you add to that Oleanna`s lines...it would be epic

Out of Britain, Minerva McGonnagall is what she's best known for. She would extend her popularity a lot abroad by taking the role. Question is, does she still care about that?

What I do think she cares about is working with professionals and getting good roles. Of course QoT would be an amazing part to play. Especially since, unfortunately, there are not that many great roles for 60+ women outside of Britain.

THe best thing about her is that she doesn`t care about money or fame...

Maggie Smith would be BRILLIANT!  HBO should ask her.  The worst thing she could say is "no."

She's a great choice, but I fear the worst thing she could say is actually "yes, but for $$$$$$$".

The casting budget is a zero-sum game, unfortunately. Pay too much for one character and you lose others.

GOT's problem is that it lacks "prestige."

I'm not knocking the show, which I enjoy...but I would imagine a period drama on PBS versus a naked incestuous ultra violent HBO show is not the same thing in her eyes.

Over here Downton Abbey is ITV, and Game of Thrones is Sky Atlantic. ITV was originally the channel that went for the lowest common denominator (game shows and soaps etc, although I think 5 has the accolade now). GoT is a huge phenomenon over here, much more hype than DA. Lets hope she is a fan!

OK, everybody, that`s that. With the news that Diana Rigg had been cast as Queen of Thorns, this tread is officially closed. We all wish Dame Rigg nothing but the best portraying our favourite "Queen of Thorns"
