Bourbon

So, I'm mostly a tequila drinker, as you might have surmised by my avatar. but as you may know, most bars do not have any good tequila. (i'm not in LA)

so my fallback lately has been jamesons, but i'm interested in venturing into bourbon.

so bourbon drinkers of the board: advise me. what's a good starting place? what are your favorites, and what are your favorites that are typically available in bars?

I'm a fan of the small batch bourbons. Maker's Mark is my favorite, although I also like Knob Creek. Booker's I did not care for. I also like Rebel Yell. Silly name, but nice bourbon. I got a bottle of Bulliet for my birthday last year that was good. I had never heard of it before.

I'll assume you know that every bar in existence probably has Jim Beam. I'll also assume you know better than to drink that. But, given your parameter of decent bourbon that almost any bar would have (my suggestions would be Maker's Mark or Knob Creek) there is a sleeper. Jim Beam Black.

Jim Beam > Jack Daniels, dude. I gotta say.

I've been fairly happy with Basil Hayden's and Elijah Craig. I currently have a bottle of Makers Mark going, and it's very good- the more expensive Makers 46 is even better, though I don't know that it's worth the uptick in price.

Beyond that, one of my favorite things is to find a bottle I haven't tried before on sale and go for it. Bulleit is good, but whether it's worthwhile depends a lot on the price point. Used to cost about $20 in CA; it costs upwards of $32 here in NYC, and even in NJ it's in the high 20s-30. Not really worth it.

If you can try some Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek, they are sort of the standard top-shelf bourbons in most bars, and for good reason- they're very nice, easy-to-drink yet flavorful whiskies.

Finally, Buffalo Trace puts out some good bourbons- I had a bottle of Eagle Rare recently that I really enjoyed.

if i can quote myself:

i am having a nice glass of pritchard's double barreled bourbon.

i find it to have a vanilla laden caramel nose. it is very nice to smell. the taste begins with a sweetness that fades into wood and herb. it is a bit on the hot side, but it is a pleasing warmth that fades a touch too quickly. you remedy this loss of warmth by another sip.

blanton's single barrel.

it is really a wonderful bourbon. i like how it is hand numbered with the date dumped, barrel number, which warehouse and what rick.

the nose on it developed over fifteen minutes or so. some of the alcohol burn dissipated leaving dare i say toasted coconut behind with charred oak and subtle apricot. no, really i smell these things.

the flavour is of roasted banana, corn, caramel with a bit of a pine edged finish. it is 93 proof and has a significant spicy alcohol burn to it. next time a small splash of water will accompany my glass.

all in all it is probably one of the best bourbons i have had.

i will drink maker's mark. it is not bad at all. other bourbons i like a lot are woodford reserve, eagle rare and i must say a go to shot when i am really adamant about committing warfare against my liver is jim beam.

Yea, I'll also take Jim over Jack.

If the Blanton's is the one we had before MDF then that one is awesome.

Any love for Four Roses?

As the Sydney boarders would tell you, I am not much of a drinker, but I was interested checking out some bourbons, but probably just a good value lower-mid range one - I'd rather spend big on Scotch!
